On the shuttle carrying Vaarek and a bunch of other cadets, Vaarek noticed that he was alone from the others. Around him, other cadets gathered in easy groups, comparing lower deck assignments, and chatting away with a seeming incontinence of emotions. Very un-Vulcan… When someone had asked him about his posting, he had simply answered “Sickbay”. After that, the person asking paused, looked confused, replying, “Already?”

These responses reinforced Vaarek’s sense of isolation and difference. Checking his pad, he knew only two names of import for him. He was to work under Lt Cdr Dr Spenn and Ens Dr Ashir th’Qiaqir. The first name sounded Vulcan, which was … reassuring. The second was not. The Andorianness of the name was clear, and it immediately caused Vaarek to remember the history between their species. Pausing the spiral of thoughts, he vowed to not let prejudices shape his conduct. Being aware of one’s own prejudices was necessary, however. He told himself he needed to meditate on this as time went on…

After landing on the Ark Angel, Vaarek followed the crowd of cadets disembarking, walking to the turbolifts, and ordering the lifts to various decks, most of them so-called lower ones. “Sickbay,” Vaarek said in a clear tone, which others ignored.

Reaching his deck, he walks zig-zag around cadets who do not move to allow him to exit the turbolift. Finally out in the corridor, he sees signs leading to Sickbay. One perk of working in Sickbay is that it’s always well-signed the direction to it.

He steps in and looks around to see someone who might be an officer to report to. He especially looks for a Vulcan or an Andorian… Can’t be too many of them around, surely?

Cadet Vaarek, Medical

Spenn was examining x-rays from an ensign’s rather interesting injury when he saw a Vulcan medical cadet looking around. He was about to order the cadet to assist Doctor Yockey in surgery when he remembered the Captain messaging him about a new Vulcan cadet. So instead, he said, “Vaarek, I assume?”
