“Quite alright, Ensign. I usually remember to lock the door if I’m in session.” Returning to the seating area, he placed the two coffees onto the coasters on the table. He took his seat in the chair opposite Waryn.
“I’m sorry, Ensign, I haven’t had the chance to review your file yet. Why don’t we back up a bit and you tell me about yourself.” He invited to give the Ensign a chance to settle before addressing what had brought him here.

Counselor Alex Cross

Izak took a sip of his coffee and leaned back in his chair. The familiarity of the heat and bite from the extra-strong coffee settled his nerves somewhat. “Well, my family is from Brekka, but they left when things got bad. I grew up on a freighter since I was really young, so I don’t really remember my home world. I got pretty good at ship piloting and repair, though. We kind of had to.”

Cross nodded as he listened gravely, sipping his own coffee. His chocolate colored eyes were warm and expressive, not showing pity but showing that he was absorbing what the Ensign was saying.

ENS Waryn took another sip of his coffee before continuing. “We came across another damaged freighter… one that we apparently didn’t have the equipment to help. I was staring out the viewport, thinking about all those people who were trapped, but then Starfleet showed up. The U.S.S. Mandel. It saved everybody on the freighter.” Izak smiled at the memory. “That’s when I started thinking about joining Starfleet.”

Cross smiled and nodded. It was a typical Starfleet story but personable despite that.
“The Mandel is a good ship, your family was fortunate she was so close.”

“I left my parents’ freighter and stayed with my sister as I applied for the Academy. She worked at a repair shop on Tendara. Once I got accepted, I only went back a couple of times. There was always so much to do at the Academy… even when the semester was over, I found additional courses to take.” He slowed down here, knowing he was getting to the part he really didn’t want to talk about.

“Understandable, I’m sure your family understood as well.” Cross murmured.

“That brings us to Year 3. The Warp Core Dynamics midterm. It was a practical lab… timed against other groups of cadets. My group was falling behind and… and I took a shortcut.” ENS Waryn cleared his throat before continuing. “Somebody got hurt. Badly. She could have died. I was reprimanded and put on Academic Probation, but they let me stay.”

Cross’ face grew a bit concerned as he listened to the description of the incident. “Very unfortunate, some of life’s lessons are very hard. The Academy board would not have allowed you to stay if they thought it had been malicious.”

“I made sure that everything I did after that was above board. Following the instructions to a ‘T’.” He looked at LT Cross, and gave him a look meant to express that he’d overcome this issue and that he wouldn’t be a liability onboard Ark Angel.

OOC: I put some “Academy Counselor’s Notes” up on my bio for reference.

OOC: Just bumping so I don’t lose this. (It just fell off the standard 7-day view for me)

OOC: Thank you! I was just going to go looking for all my threads again!

Cross nodded, “Ensign, I have no concerns that it would something you would repeat. You appear to have learned from it. Question though,”Cross said as he took a quick look at his padd. “It says part of this was due to use of innate ability. Is this ability common among your people? Was there no one when you were growing up to help you learn how to harness it or use it safely?”

Counselor Alex Cross

Izak blinked a few times and felt himself calm down a bit as the Counselor’s words put him at ease. That was one of the worst moments in his life and he desperately didn’t want it to be what defined him.

LT Cross’s follow up question caused the young Ensign’s stomach to twist again. “Um, no. Not really. I mean… the ability to generate bio-electricity is genetic, and my family did teach me how to control it. That’s more of a brute force thing though… like a defensive evolution at some point back in our history.”

“The ability to… interface with machines… I think that might have been more a flight of fancy than a real ability.” Izak swallowed. “When I was younger my hands would tingle like I was feeling the electricity in whatever I was working on. It almost seemed like equipment did what I wanted it to even before I entered the command. It seemed to happen more with computers… especially ones with bio-neural circuitry.”

Izak managed to look embarrassed as he spoke again. “I thought it was a mutation… or another evolution of Brekkian physiology. I listed it on my Academy application and tried to study it those first few years. I took a few Exobiology classes and worked to recreate the conditions and measure what was going on in my body and the equipment when it happened. Unfortunately, whenever I actively force the ability it backfired or fried out the circuitry. Culminating in the incident.”

“Its not something I’m interested in pursuing anymore.” Ensign Waryn finished quickly.
