USS Ark Angel
Arrival

Sure, she’s big, but does she go fast? Jace thought as the crew transfer he was on came into view of the Ark Angel. He had been sitting ‘still’ for at least 5 minutes since the pilot told him to sit and let them do the flying, and that no, they really didn’t want Jace to drift the shuttlecraft.
He wasn’t the only one on the shuttlecraft, of course.
There was a family of humans, the Ratcliffes. The father was in Medical, mother a civilian, and they had 3 children. The oldest of the kids, a tall lad called Thomas, asked Jace endless questions about his time in the Academy and also challenged him to a game of 1 on 1 basketball once they got to the Ark Angel. Unable to resist a challenge, Jace accepted it. The other other two were twins, and they were intrigued by Jace’s spots. “Did they hurt,” the boy asked. Jace grinned, and shook his head, telling him “I’m too tough for that to hurt, mate”, and assuring the mother it was fine, both the question and the 1 on 1 challenge. “They look nice on you, Mister,” the girl said, “Mum, can I get spots like his?” Jace thanked her and he said to the mother, deadpan, “I’ll send you the pattern.”
There was a Vulcan, “your hair, Ensign, is not regulation for a male Starfleet officer. You’ll need to get it cut before your first duty assignment.” The Vulcan sounded like to Jace’s ears like his mother, part of the establishment, setting the rules, rules that Jace chaffed against. The vulcan was in science, and Jace hoped they wouldn’t meet or interact with each other on board the Ark Angel. “Ignore him, man,” Thomas whispered to Jace, “he’s just jealous, your hair its cool.” Jace fistbumped with the teen.
Finally, there were a pair of Bynars, holographic engineering specialists. Jace had never seen them before, though he had heard of them from his siblings. They were 1001 and 0110 and they intrigued him with the way they completed each other’s sentences. Jace tried not to stare, but he was curious about them. “No, Ensign, we have our own rooms, like every other junior officer on board.”
They were going across in two groupings, firstly the Ratcliffe family, then Jace, the Vulcan and the two Bynars.
“It was a safe trip,” Jace told the shuttlecraft pilot before standing on the transporter padd, “all by the book. Look me up sometime, I’ll show you a few tricks, how to drift the craft instead of orbit it. How to not play it safe. How to make it fun.”
“Energising,” the pilot replied, and Jace and the others demarterialised from the shuttlecraft, appearing a moment later on board the Ark Angel.

The Ratcliffe family were leaving the transporter room as Jace, the two Bynars and the Vulcan appeared. Thomas turned and looked directly at Jace.
“You and me, man, 1 on 1 basketball, don’t q1forget,” Thomas called out.
“I won’t,” Jace replied.
The transporter officer moved Jace and the others on and encouraged those we were replacing onto the transporter pads.
Jace showed his orders and received directions to his quarters.
