Jace Vorel

TLDR
Jace Vorel is the reckless ‘black sheep’ of his high-achieving family, a brilliant but arogant pilot currently chafing at the helm (and in operations) of the USS Ark Angel. Driven by a deep-seated inferiority complex, and a past rejection from the elite Red Squad, he treats regulations as optional and flies with an aggressive ‘gut instinct’ style to prove his worth. He is the ultimate hotshot who believes that:

Build: Wiry and aerodynamic. He lacks the brute mass of his brothers Ralan or Varis. He is built for speed and flexibility: a ‘featherweight’ physique that he is surprisingly sensitive about.
Hair: Dark brown, worn longer than regulation (a constant point of contention with First Officers, Academy Instructors and (some) older brothers). It usually looks windblown, even indoors.
Eyes: Electric Blue. They are constantly darting, scanning, and moving. He rarely blinks when at a console.
Distinguishing marks:
1) Surgical Scar (spine): A faint vertical line at the base of his neck/upper spine, the result of corrective surgery after his Academic injury.
2) The Spots: Visible on his neck and temples, usually flushed darker when he is excited or flying (or both).

Voral Family Members & Dynamics

• Father - Dr Jaren Vorel (Xeno-Linguist specialising in dead dialects of the Gamma Quadrant) - Jaren speaks 40 languages and loves silence, Jace speaks 1 language (speed) and hates silence.
• Mother - Director Kestra Vorel, Senior Auditor, Trill Symbiosis Commission (Ethics & Compatibility Division) - Jace believes Kestra was behind his Red Squad rejection, Kestra is terrified for him and is too fragile for his job. Her criticism of him is anxiety, Jace views it as disappoint.
• Sister - Federation Ambassador Vora Kahr (joined Trill), Trill Symbiosis Cultural Exchange, 7th Host of the Kahr Symbiont, twin of Torin (12 minutes his senior) - Jace views her as the Golden Child, more than his sister, she is the Establishment. He feels like a chaotic child in her presence, and just wants her to agree and say 'your XO is a jerk', not lecture him with her wisdom from 7 lifetimes. Jace is intimidated by her, thinks she's judging him,
• Brother - Lt Commander Torin Vorel, Counselor, twin of Vora - Jace views him as a 'killjoy'. They argue 'calculated risk (Torin) vs 'gut instinct' (Jace) via subspace constantly.
• Brother - Lieutenant Ralan Vorel, Engineer - he is Jace's favourite brother, Ralan tells Jace how to tune engines to get more power out of them, even if it is against regulations
• Brother - Lieutenant JG Varis Vorel, Security - Varis calls Jace 'the runt', encourages him to put 'some meat on them bones' and sends him big brother advice, which embarasses Jace, especially when Jace is mucking with 'the lads'. While embarassed, Jace views Varis as a loveable, suffocating mountain of muscle.

• Core Drive: Velocity is his Validation: Jace flies because when he is going FAST, he doesn't have time to thing about being LAST. As the youngest Vorel, he feels he has to shout (or fly) the loudest to be noticed.
• The 'Red Squad' ChipJace is technically a brilliant pilot, probably the most naturally gifted of the family. However, his arrogance is a defense mechanism. He was rejected from the elite 'Red Squad' cadet wing not because of skill, but because his psych-profile flagged him as unstable.
• Command Attitude: He struggles with the sit and wait nature of exploration on a starship. He treats the ship like a runabout or shuttlecraft. He wants to drift it; Command wants him to orbit it.

Counselor’s Notes - Ensign Ekaton Jarem, Counselor, USS Inteprid - Cadet Cruise

Even though I was an Ensign and he was a Cadet, we were still on our initial cruise out of the Academy. Jace proved to be a difficult patient to work with, but the chief counselor said that not all patients are going to be easy, not even on a Starfleet vessel, where they have had the benefit of the Academy.

• Inferiority Complex: Jace exhibits 'small dog syndrome'. He is the smallest and youngest (by a considerable margin) of a high-achieving family. He overcompensates with bravado.
• Risk Addiction: He has difficulty functioning in low-stress environments. If the ship is just scanning a nebula for weeks, Jace becomes restless, irritable, and prone to pranks or insubordination just to generate stimulation.
• Authority Issues: He projects his frustrations with his parents and eldest brother (Torin) onto his commanding officers. He perceives safety protocols as personal insults to his skill.
• Treatment Plan: He needs to be given tasks that use his reflexes but require patientce. Meditation is recommended, but he'll likely refuse.
