Tak held onto Paku’s hand as they all but dragged their son along the corridor. Paku wasn’t exactly struggling, but he wasn’t cooperating either. “I feel fine, Theta,” he complained.

“Paku, every person aboard this ship requires a regular check-up in sickbay, and you are no exception to that. You are a growing boy, and we need to make sure you are growing properly.”

“I feel fine,” he repeated.

“You are an oceanic creature who has spent his childhood on starships instead of on the ocean.”

“And who’s fault is that?”

“You really want to pull that card??” Tak stopped, staring at Paku, who stared back defiantly. “If the fault belongs to anyone or anything, it is the fault of the storm that killed your pod.”

Paku looked away, still glowering. “You coulda raised me in the sea, if you cared that much about me being oceanic.”

“Paku, I could not have. A child requires an entire Pod. I am one person. I could not have kept you safe out there on the ocean. It is impossible.”

Paku continued to sulk. “I don’t wanna go to sickbay. It smells weird and they poke you and prod you.”

“It is nearly time for your First Hunt. If you are to do that, you require a clean bill of health, and tests to ensure you have the endurance required. Starfleet will not approve of our Leave otherwise.” It was a bit of a white lie. The check-up was required for the Leave approval, but he didn’t need to pass any pre-set requirements.

“How could they?!” Paku looked aghast, and changed his mind, immediately moving towards Sickbay. “We gotta go, I need to have my first hunt! Kota will never let me live it down if I don’t!!”

Before long, they arrived in Sickbay and Paku bounced on his feet, waiting impatiently.

Devin walked out of her office and smiled softly at the pair. “Ah good afternoon, what can I be helping ye with today?” She was in-between appointments and was more than happy to be of assistance.
