It seems the damage to the lab area was at a critical stage, power loss was evident and likely it was a cry for help for those nanites that were in the remaining tube not to be lost. They needed to act fast however, as based on alien symbols getting lower and flashing dangerously they did not have much time for extensive repair work. An engineer needed to stabilize this power or quickly rig something from a power cell with equipment on hand to buy more time.......if they so wished to do so naturally.
