Clearly the shard was obviously something more then just a shard of metal.

Thoughts flooded Buckingham’s mind. He felt panicked to find a solution. He thought hard for a moment.

“My first thought is to use the Ark Angel’s Medical Transporter and lock onto the object and try to beam it out, then do any repair work that may be necessary.”
He waited to see how this suggestion was found by the ladies.

It left Buckingham stumped as to what about the shard could cause this type of reaction.

”..But....but well if just making cuts near it set off some kind of defense mechanism wouldn’t full removal by a transporter make it worse? And given if earlier the scans were murky would your transporters be able to see it?” The younger one asked.

Thomas could reflect they were valid concerns on both cases. But the only way would be to contact the Ark Angel and see what they could see or not see, and then as the officer on point here make a call one way or another on the consequences.
