Katie turned from the main control panel in Engineering and quickly surveyed everyone. The instruments had all flat-lined. The ship had successfully established subwarp flight and all systems were nominal. Perhaps more important, everyone in Engineering had done their jobs well and, though they had largely relaxed after the transition to normal space, they were all still attentive to their stations. All was well.

She glanced over at Anang. The two and a half meter tall bright yellow avian nodded at her showing his approval of how the department was working. All was indeed well. Her PADD pinged and she read the incoming message. She smiled and ran her fingers through her short white hair.

“Anang,” she said as she walked toward the chief warrant officer. “It appears we have a new Engineering Officer. A very new engineering officer. One Kaden Buchanan.”

“Fresh out of the academy I take it from your tone of voice,” the old bird said.

“Yes,” Katie said handing her PADD to Anang. “I’ll leave the initial orientation to you.”

Kaden walked through the doors of main engineering and saw a large amount of activity going on. He looked around to find the ranking officer in engineering. He wasn’t sure who to speak with so he just walked up to where there was a Lt. j.g. and commented, “I am Kaden Buchanan and I am looking for the Chief Engineer in order to report in. Are you Lt Hobbes?” He then waited for a response.

“I am indeed,” Katie said with a slight smile. She turned and directed the Ensign’s attention to Anang. “And this is Chief Anang. You will find that, even though he is not a commissioned officer, he knows more about these systems and their inter-relationships than almost anyone alive. Practical experience as opposed to school learning. You would do well to listen to him.”

“Lieutenant Hobbes is being generous,” Anang said holding up one hand in greeting. “It is my pleasure to welcome you to our team, sir.”
