Katie frowned. Everything seemed to be in order here and the Synthesis engineering team struck her as being competent. Just what she, as a recent academy graduate, could add to the mix was unclear. And perhaps that was exactly what Miz’uki expected from her; a fresh pair of eyes unbiased by years of familiarity with the systems. She glanced around looking for a place where she wouldn’t be in the way and could do some potentially meaningful diagnostics.

Once the Synthesis’s CO and the others from the Ark Angel had left, Miz’uki and Hobbes were left with the other four engineers lead by the ship’s CE Lt Austin the human male looked over both of the newcomers to his engine room. “..So you folks want to go poking around my engines and systems huh? Personally I don’t like it but orders are orders I guess. So where you two want to start?..” he inquired.

“Lt. Miz’uki. If you don’t have a particular task in mind for me, I think I’ll start by checking the coolant system. Utility systems always seem to be the ones which everyone assumes they are functioning correctly,” Katie said.

Austin looked to Hobbes, “..The coolant system? Well an odd place I guess to start any kind of scans, but I guess it would help me guide you if I knew what you were looking for?” he inquired between Hobbes and Miz’uki.

Katie smiled at Austin as she adjusted her tricorder.

“If I knew exactly what I was looking for I would be happy to tell you,” she said. “As for the coolant system, it is the very simplicity of it and how thoroughly we understand it, that makes it attractive as a place to start. A normal coolant system on a well maintained ship will be straight-line and solid. Any anomalies will stand out.”

She stopped and adjusted her tricorder again. That number couldn’t be right.

“Like this one,” she said holding the tricorder so that Austin could see the readout. “What exactly did you experience here?”
