[snip]Moments later, the turbolift doors hissed open and Caelian nearly tumbled from the lift. He looked around wildly, bobbing this way and that, until he spotted Miz’uki. Though a little apprehensive given her mood earlier, he nonetheless jogged over to where she was standing. Offering her a polite smile, he nearly collapsed against the console next to her.
“Chief,” he gasped, “we need. To get. Everyone on duty. Down here.”
Before she could formulate a response, Caelian held up a finger and hunched over to brace his hands on his knees. Gods be good, why was the Ark Angel so massive? When he could work out more than two words at a time, he did his best to explain the situation. His fingers moved over the console, uploading his projections and data to the nearby workstation where the chief engineer could review it. Once he was done, Caelian made a vague gesture in the direction of the warp core.
“Unless you think it’s not necessary, it might be wise to isolate the main drive systems from the EPS grids.” Screwing up his face, he added, “life support and other critical systems, too. You know her better than I do, Chief.”
He spun around almost comically until he spied the tool locker, then tilted off in that direction. He called to Miz’uki over his shoulder. “I’m going to see if I can’t find a way to boost structural integrity and maybe even squeeze a little more out of our inertial dampeners. I have no idea how quickly we’ll be stopping, and I don’t want to be a bug on a galactic viewscreen, if you catch my meaning.”
—Caelian Weir, Engineer—Miz’uki was making one last triple check of the double-check when Weir burst in she was flabbergasted and before she could even tell the Ensign to slow down a moment he was already racing off again But thinking about what he had said it was a good idea and even the data he brought her supported it “Alright people you heard the Ensign unless you want to make a new home in whatever afterlife you believe in I suggest that we get back to work!” she said working at her console to begin the changes
Ensign I say we need to shut down all non-critical systems completely while we do this the extra power from them can be routed into the Damperners and SIF” she said a soft smile coming to her muzzle “Good work kid” she added before turning to make the new adjustments
Miz’uki
With the minutes ticking down the adjustments were made barely in time with less then ten minutes to spare. They were as ready as they could be to accept the dying protomatter’s energy to harness it to hopefully return home.

Caelian winced as the back of his head kissed the bulkhead, but the overwhelming sense of relief washed the pain away as he set his spanner down. The isolinear array hummed before him, indicator lights letting him know that it was operating as expected. It would have to be. Grunting the heavy panel back into place, the engineer snagged his toolkit and began to wriggle backward out of the jeffries tube. It was sheer willpower that kept him from collapsing once he was back in main engineering.
=^=Weir to Jackson,=^= he gasped, slapping his comm badge. =^=What’s your status?=^=
=^=Jackson here. The deflector is primed and ready, boss. No issues to report.=^=
Caelian nodded, tapped his badge again. =^=Weir to L’Nel. Status.=^=
=^=Assuming no further distractions,=^= the Vulcan’s voice came back dryly, =^=I am ready. All personnel have been cleared from the surrounding area.=^=
=^=Acknowledged.=^= Shaking his head at the host of numbers and equations crashing around in his head, Caelian dragged himself to his feet and keyed up a nearby console. After checking his work both visually and with a computer-aided diagnostic, he sent a quick message to V’alura to let her know that they were prepared.
=^=Weir to Bridge,=^= he called finally with a sigh, =^=Captain, we’re about as ready as we can be here. Remember, our integrity measures will only give us about five minutes after we begin collecting energy before we either need to use it or dump it. Safe hunting.=^=
