Animal Naming Ceremony — Chris Logan / Lynx

Autumn settles softly over the forests surrounding Crater Lake, Oregon. The air is cool, scented with pine and the warm spice of fallen leaves. A canopy of gold, ember-red, and burnt orange sways above, stirred by a gentle evening breeze. At the center of a quiet clearing—carpeted in crisp leaves and amber needles—rests a smooth, timeworn volcanic stone.

The silence is broken by a sudden, graceful descent—broad white wings gliding down through the forest light.

A majestic snowy owl, feathers luminous as early winter’s first frost, sweeps into the clearing. She settles lightly upon the stone, amber eyes shining with ancient authority. After a moment of perfect stillness, she lifts her head and releases three resonant hoots that echo across the forest like a call older than memory.

Her summons stirs life from every shadow.

Animals gather from all directions—padding, trotting, slithering, fluttering, lumbering—forming a vast, respectful circle around the WiseOwl. Creatures from every land and every climate stand united beneath the autumn sky.

Among them are Budgie, Capybara, Weasel, Cockroach, Seal, Griffin, Bumblebee, Coyote, Koala, Mouse, Beaver, Pelican, Kraken, Tiger, Wolverine, Kiwi Bird, Rhinoceros, Hummingbird…
And stepping lightly through a shimmering drift of leaves—her flame-red tail brushing the forest floor—comes Fox.

Beside her moves a sleek, rosette-marked shadow: Ocelot, regal and poised, eyes glowing gold beneath the fading sunlight.

Close behind them, towering and powerful, Gorilla arrives, beating his chest once in solemn greeting.

Then, from between the pines, a shape appears—silent, gray-furred, and steady.
A Wolfe, tall and sure of step, pads into the clearing. His coat is silvered like the moonlit peaks of the Cascades, his eyes bright and watchful. He raises his muzzle in greeting, offering a single respectful howl that echoes off the lake in the distance.

The Ceremony is about to begin.

“Bring in our newest member!” hoots the WiseOwl, her voice warm and commanding.

At the glowing edge of the clearing, a Tribble, round and softly purring, bounces forward. Beside it glides a Dolphin, riding atop a conjured stream of shimmering water that flows like liquid starlight across the forest floor.

Together, the unlikely pair part the autumn foliage to reveal the figure summoned tonight. Though humble and quiet, he was chosen by his fellow Captains, who recognized his keen instincts, steady leadership, and grounded strength.

Chris Logan, child of Oregon’s rain-washed wilderness, steps into the circle. After a brief pause to center himself, he breathes in the crisp fall air and moves forward with purpose.

The snowy WiseOwl regards him with wise, amber eyes.

“Chris Logan!” she calls. “You have been summoned because you are now one of us. You are a Captain. The time has come to name you, to bind you to our ranks. Do you object?”

Chris shakes his head—quiet, certain.

With a soft sweep of her white wing, the WiseOwl fastens Captain’s pips to his collar, the metal gleaming like cold stars in the amber dusk.

“I name you: Lynx.

You come from the forests of the Pacific Northwest, and like the lynx—sharp-eyed, silent-footed, swift and instinctive—you walk a path guided by awareness, restraint, and subtle strength and the courage to stand alone when the moment calls for it.

Welcome, Lynx, to the STF Captain’s Club.”

The clearing erupts in joyful wildness—howls, hoots, chirps, chitters, roars, the solemn chest-beat of Gorilla, the bright yip of Fox, the smooth trill of Ocelot, the soft purr of Tribble, the resonant howl of Wolfe, and even the distant, haunting call of Kraken from the depths of Crater Lake.

The snowy owl spreads her wings.

“May Sisko have mercy on your soul!” she hoots with a mischievous glint, bringing the ceremony to its close.

As twilight deepens into velvet night, their celebration rises over Crater Lake, through the red-gold forest, and into the cold, starry Oregon sky.
