Do the Main Fleets enjoy some special privilege as to make them more desirable than being in X-Fleet?

(snip)

Yes, mainstream ships do enjoy special privileges that X-Fleet ships do not get: character promotions apply toward member rank, Fleet Commanders support COs in the administration of their ship, the PDept assigns new members (although they would not on an alt RPG, likely), the EDept ensures that the ship has a thorough spec, the time storytelling does not count toward GM qualifications, etc.

What makes moving a ship to the Main Fleets desirable? Isn’t X-Fleet, where there is more flexibility, more options on who can be GM, and more story options, in fact more desirable if you’re not playing a traditional character/story?

(snip)

I think this is an excellent point (which may or may not be the point in your question, but I’m going with it). There is nothing wrong with being an X-Fleet ship; it’s simply a less controlled area to explore an idea without taxing the club’s resources, some of which are currently taxed beyond sustainability (e.g. GMs). I’m not sure that the benefits above of being a mainstream ship truly outweigh that. This would have to be something specifically addressed in any proposal in Command for a new alt RPG from an X-Fleet ship.

Why is having this inroad so important to you; if you are not advising this, why do you think this keeps coming up over and over again when there isn’t enough popular support to have facilitated it in the ~8 years since X-Fleet’s inception?

I think this is one of those cases where the why behind the intent of X-Fleet has not been documented thoroughly so we end up having the same discussions over and over again. I hope that, with the availability of the WeBBspace archive now, we can take a critical look at all of the X-Fleet history and see if there are any better ways to use this idea to give people this creative outlet in the club.

Considering the fact that there is a viable way to go about getting a new ship put into the main fleet, why (in your respective opinions) do so many people decide to do x fleet instead? Also, why haven’t more people that have conducted x fleet experiments not pursued this course?

Thank you,
Dave Eads

I think the simplest answer to this is something that has been a problem since my previous Presidency: people are either afraid of posting in Command and/or they don’t know how to propose a new alt RPG. Command has had this mysterious aura around it since I joined STF in 2001 and it’s a really difficult issue to tackle to make sure that newer members feel comfortable jumping in and proposing ideas. If we can help make sure that process to suggest a new Alt-RPG is as transparent as how to request a new X-Fleet ship, we may have better luck routing things appropriately – or at least we’ll know that people have the information to make an informed decision and that they are then still actively choosing to RP in X-Fleet instead.
