Wiles Osten

Physical Description: Wiles is a young, white, human man. He has a slimmer build, with a moderate amount of muscle, and has dirty-blonde hair that is cut short on the sides and kept longer on the top, styled to give him a slight curl and poof at the top of his forehead. He has green eyes and soft, yet handsome features.

General Personality: Wiles has always been a “jack of all trades” - his personal passions and interests span a wide variety of subjects, but he has yet to hone in on one specialty. As such, Wiles’ defining characteristic is his open-minded and flexible nature, willing to try any and all experiences. He values the perspectives of others and is happy to adapt his role to the needs of the group. This leads him to be a valuable team member, but he is rarely one to take initiative. Wiles instead considers himself a “compiler,” in that he often takes ideas from those around him and organizes those thoughts into a cohesive compromise. Wiles is typically relaxed and rather low-energy, operating from a more free-floating mental space than most. Wiles presents as introverted and particularly deep-thinking.

Profession: A lack of specialization has left Wiles unsure of his place within Star Fleet. He seems to have been placed in security by default, as although he has casual interests in the sciences and in technology, he is not intensely invested in any specific area of either field. Wiles’ good nature does lend him to being an agreeable, peaceful-solution driven security officer, but his indecisiveness and lack of initiative also present challenges in a position where he will often need to make tough decisions, and quickly.

History: Wiles grew up in Portland on Earth prior to attending Starfleet Academy in San Francisco. Wiles’ childhood was largely unremarkable, other than being raised by two psychologists. Wiles’ cadet cruise aboard the U.S.S. Challenger entwined his path with that of a mysterious plant-based virus that caused him to act extremely aggressively until a remedy was found. The long-lasting impacts of this exposure are still unknown.

Medical: Wiles’ medical record is frequently updated, and shows that Wiles has only had two major medical episodes in his early life: a broken left radius at age three and a skull fracture to the occipital bone at age five, both of which had completely healed without noted incident. Wiles contracted infectious mononucleosis during his first year at the academy, which was promptly treated. Wiles is in excellent physical health, standing at 5’10”, 150lbs, 15% body fat. The only ongoing condition flagged in Cadet Osten’s medical file is mild depression, diagnosed four years ago. Wiles is prescribed medication at a minimum dosage. He manages the condition primarily with psychological therapy. Symptoms reported prior to medication included: fatigue, diminished ability to think/concentrate, anhedonia, hypersomnia, and depressed mood. No major depressive episodes recorded. Addendum: Cadet Osten was exposed to a plant-based virus on the Challenger as a cadet that caused fever-like symptoms and aggressive behavior. Long-lasting effects unknown.
