Ashley was born on Mars. She had a normal childhood. Both her parents worked at the Utopia Planitia Starfleet Yards. That is where they meet. They where both where engineers and worked on the same shift for years. They both had a love of engineering. Many conversation over the dinner table was about the latest ship they where working on or the like. Something Ashley found very dull. It was clear from an early age Ashley was no engineer.
Ashley’s teen years where spent out in the dune fields where she drove a homemade dune buggy that she built with her fathers help. She had a love of speed and danger. She would takes risks that lead to a few too many accidents. One of which nearly cost her her life when she flipped her buggy. The accident shattered her left leg and damaged her back that had to be replaced with cybernetics but it didn’t stop her from doing things she love.
When Ashley left school Ashley she wasn’t sure what she wanted to. She spent a number of years working for a cargo company diving massive cargo haulers around Mars. A job she didn’t mind because it gave her every weekend off to work on and race her buggy.
It was at one of these races she was approached by a marine about joining a new fast ground base unit for recon and fast attack strikes using a new 6 wheeled lightly armoured vehicle with a crew of 4, Driver, com-intelligence and 2 gunners. The new vehicle became known as the Ground Raiders. Ashley attended the marine training programme and did well. Her skill at driving the new Raider brought her to the attention of her trainers and she was put on the leadership programme.
Her training was almost finished when the Dominion War started and her unit was rushed out to the front to give the ground forces a much needed fast attack and recon support unit. A unit able to counter the Jem’Hadar on a planet. During the war Ashley was put in the command of a 3 Vehicle attack unit that she gave the name the Mars Reapers.
The Mars Reapers saw a number of combat missions mainly attacking lines of communications, supply and support centres or out flanking moves. They also spent a large amount of time behind enemy lines report troop movements, numbers and other important information. They where also used to deploy covert op missions and under took a number of search and rescue missions where other forms of transport was seen as too risky.
Ashley and her reapers had soon became known for being able to get the job done and she was given a wide range to operate as she saw fit. Unlike other units the Reapers where more relaxed and tended to keep themselves to themselves. This gave her more flexibility but she did away with the by the book regs that the regular forces used. It was once commented that her unit looked more like a ground of dirty pirates then a Marine unit. Something she took to heart even going as far as getting hold of a large skull and crossbones flag that they would ride back into camp with after each success mission to show they had achieved another mission behind enemy lines.
Toward the end of the war the Reapers where being sent on more daring mission to try and brake the now defensive troops of the Dominion lines. The day before the Founders surrendered the Reapers where deployed to farm world to help find and destroy a Jem’Hadar Anti Air-space defence unit that had been shooting down ships in orbit but was also highly mobile and the Marines needed to get medical supplies to the wounded civilians. The reapers tracked down this unit and engaged them destroying the main sensor allowing a wing of fighter to come in a destroy them. However it cost her all 3 of her vehicles. Only 5 out of the 12 crew survived the engagement. Ashley herself was wounded when she gave covering fire giving time for the others to escape. As she fell into the burning vehicle unable to move due to her injuries affecting her cybernetics in her back she expected her time was up but she was pulled out by a shuttle team that had been shot down a few days before. They had heard the fire fight and made their way there hoping it would be a way out. When Ashley came to again she found herself in a medical bay aboard a star fleet ship heading back to earth full of wounded marines. She was also informed the was over. She asked about her team but was told they had all been killed as they tried to make their way back. The Jem’Hadar had not received the stand down and had killed then 2 days after the end of the war.
The news destroyed her. She fell into PTSD and depression. She blamed herself for there loss added with what she had seen during the war all hit her hard. During the war she had something to focus on, now that she was the last of her unit and the war was over she didn’t have anything to distract her.
She spent the 3 years learning how to walk again after a number of major operations to repair the damage to her back cybernetics. She also saw a number of councillors but none of them appear to understand how she was filling. It also became clear to her that there was a lack of support for the mental health of the returning Marines. While she was trapped in a chair she found a new focus. She trained how to become a councillor. With nothing else to do she managed to pass her exams in no time and started to treat others.
Once back on Earth she practice for 2 years but didn’t take to it. The 4 walls of her office started to close in on her so she put in for a ship based role however with the downsize of the Marine Corp no post was available, She was offered the chose of transferring to a standard ship or remain in her office. She chose a standard ship.
