BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES
A. Background Summary:
Quinn Phy-Knight was born in Middleton, Colorado, Earth on the June 7th 2226, to parents James and Ann Phy-Knight. In her early years, she had an abundance of energy, which often led to carnage within the home, so her parents enrolled her in martial arts lessons in order to help her channel it. Quinn quickly excelled and was steered towards ITF Tae Kwon Do by age seven; eventually receiving private instruction. As her excess energy was harnessed and strong levels of discipline and concentration instilled in her, Quinn’s academic performance soared. By the time she entered high school, she had become a straight A student. During her first two years at Middleton High School, she split her sporting activities between track and martial arts, winning the schools 100m, 200m and 400m gold medals in both her freshman and sophomore years. However, her subsequent defeats in her semi-final and 3rd placed play-off at the state Tae Kwon Do championship in her sophomore year, irked both her and her instructor to the point that she ditched track so she could focus solely on her martial art. Quinn won the tournament the following year and finished 3rd in the national tournament. Only this was not enough for her. With an insatiable desire to be the best, Quinn intensified her training over her senior year and retained her state championship crown in March 2244.

It was during her senior year at Middleton that her mother, a gifted surgeon who had elected to take up a position at Star-Fleet medical when Quinn was born, accepted a mission to perform a complex surgery on a foreign world leader who could not travel. She was scheduled to arrive home two weeks before Quinn’s 18th birthday. Unfortunately, due to an ion-storm, her transport was delayed by nine days and pushed close to the border with the Klingon Empire.

The 2244 National Tae Kwon Do championship took place on 31st of May, one week before Quinn’s eighteen birthday. A day that will forever be etched in her memory. Fighting her way through a tough field, Quinn eventually emerged victorious. Her jubilation lasted a mere forty-five minutes. Trophy in hand, she cleared the mat, said a few words to the baying journalists and was moving through the crowd with her trainer; excitedly talking about her victory and possible future, when she became aware of the absence of her family. When she finally found her father, all Quinn’s joy turned to sorrow on learning that the ship her mother had been travelling home on had been destroyed and no one had survived. A Star-Fleet investigation could only conjecture at possible Klingon involvement, but never found any hard evidence to prove it.

In the weeks following Ann’s death, the Phy-Knight family unit slowly began to disintegrate. James, an engineer and star-ship designer, quickly threw himself into his work and spent increasingly more time away from home. This left Quinn constantly looking after her younger brothers and the home. The death of her mother had also served to highlight to her human mortality. Slowly she began to see the emptiness of non-mortal combat competition and that the trophy, which sat pride of place on her shelf, was just an empty cup. Cooped up and constrained by her new life, Quinn ran away from home on a night when she knew for certain her father was coming home; leaving him only a short message to tell him she wouldn’t be back.

Over the next few months Quinn binged on freedom as she backpacked across earth. On her journey she frequently engaged in extreme sports, skydiving, snowboarding and white-water rafting being chief amongst them. Each brought with it an adrenaline rush that she fed off of, allowing her to supress the pain and guilt she felt from her mother’s death and abandoning her family. However, soon it was not enough and she had to find a new adventure. Quinn set her sights upwards and out into space.
Finding the first ship leaving earth (a non-federation trading vessel) Quinn agrees to assist with security of the cargo in exchange for passage. It is during this voyage that she got her first taste of proper combat, when the ship was attacked by a group of pirates that including a female Orion. The rush of being involved in a real life or death situation proved to be more than any she had ever experienced. Hooked on her knew high, Quinn spent the next three years travelling aboard cargo vessels as a security officer or on non-Federation planets/stations, where she leant her skills to any local law enforcement agency that was having difficulty apprehending a dangerous criminal. On multiple occasions she traded blows with the Orion woman she encountered on her very first voyage, the pair seemingly drawn towards one another like interstellar magnets.

When travelling in the vicinity of earth, the ship Quinn was travelling on was forced to stop at a science station for repairs. There she met one of her old school friends who had recently arrived to conduct an experiment as part of her University degree, only to discover that her father had suffered a serious accident the previous month and was still recovering. Feeling her pain and guilt dragged up to the surface, Quinn eventually decided it was time to head home for a brief visit; not knowing what sort of reception she would get. Arriving on the doorstep, she rang the bell and her father answered it, a stunned expression on his face. A quick, “hi, Dad,” was enough to snap him out of his shock and cause him to throw his arms around her and dissolve into tears.

After spending more time than she had planned to at home and serving as an exceptionally bad influence on her brothers because of all the stories she had told them, Quinn eventually felt the itch to go back out into space and continue her adventures. However, after a heart to heart with her father, he suggested an alternative to her; that she join Star-Fleet. While initially vehemently opposed to the idea, he explained that it sounded to him like she had done a lot of good while out travelling the galaxy, even if it was a by-product of her thrill-seeking behaviour and that she could help many more people and have bigger adventures if she joined Star-Fleet. Quinn spent the following few days mulling over this idea and eventually decided to apply for the academy’s next intake.

While at the academy, Quinn fell in with a crowd of other misfits like herself and formed a close circle of friends, who developed a love of all things late 20th century including clothing, music, tv shows and much to the chagrin of the staff, slang. She and her friends clashed often with some of the more ‘in’ crowd, in particular a group led by a girl named Bonnie Rockwaller. The rivalry between Quinn and Bonnie came to a head in their final year when the latter goaded the former into entering the academy’s mixed martial arts tournament, even though Quinn had sworn never to fight in a ‘meaningless’ tournament again. She won the tournament, beating Bonnie in the final bout.

During her time at the academy, Quinn did not have a spotless disciplinary record. On multiple occasions, she fell afoul of academy security for using force to try and defuse situations that should have been left to them. A notable incident involved her using a jumping split kick to separate two students who were involved in a fight; actually doing more injury to both than they had managed to do to each other, although this could not be proven.

While she graduated the academy within the top bracket of her class, her over-zealous attitude and disciplinary record, combined with the activities of her years prior to joining Star-Fleet, led her to be viewed as anything from a gamble to an outright loose phasor bank by any prospective captain who read her file. This resulted in her being assigned as a security officer at Star-Fleet HQ.
