After the boarding physical exams were done, Kai was searching for his Head Department.
“Sorry ma’am, where can I find the Science Head Department?” Asked to a fellow crew member who worked in the same division.
“Mr. Kanto?” She asked back
“Yes, I am new, I need to report for duty.”
“He’s in Science Lab 1.” She said with a big smile on her face.

Thanking the woman, Kai was heading back to the turbolift. It took less than 2 minutes to reach Deck one, but afterwards he exited the lift he was again feeling nervous: Deck 1 was also the Bridge location and the Idea to meet the captain in person was making Kai really, really embarrassed. But luckily for him, neither the First Officer, not the Captain were in his way.

Now he was in front of this door, with the sign: “Science Lab 1”
After a deep breath he entered the room, and inside he found 4 people. The higher in grade was a Vulcan Lieutenant Junior Grade scientist, supposedly Mr. Kanto. He was wearing again the same blue uniform, and his pips were lucid as they were new. After deducting he was his Head Department, Kai headed to him and said: “Good afternoon, Sir. Cadet Kai, reporting for duty. I’m fresh from the Academy.”

IC: The Vulcan looked up from the report he was reading and acknowledged the cadet. “Mr. Kingstone. Welcome aboard. I will not bore you with petty small talk as I have read your file and you will make a sufficient scientist for the duties you will need to perform on this ship. If you would follow me to my office, perhaps we can discuss your specialties?”

Kanto gestured towards the office at the end of the Science Lab, but did not wait for the cadet’s response as he started walking towards the office at a very brisk pace. His very stoic demeanor betrayed the fact that he was definitely new at his job, but very much was trying to play it ‘by the book’, as it were.

Kai tried to reply “yessir” to his Department Head. But when he was about to talk, Mr. Kanto was already walking toward the office.

It was no surprise his behavior and he already knew that Vulcans were almost completely emotionless and that sometimes it was irritating their loyalty to the pure logic lifestyle. When he was at the Academy few Vulcans and half-human Vulcans were his class mates. One was even his friend besides the complexity to understand one of each other.

Following his DH through the Lab, he could see fancy machinery and tricorders, colored screenings, scanners lectures and many experiments put a bit everywhere. He though: “Will be this my future workplace? They’ll be my colleagues?” Looking at the blue uniformed people that were busy in their work.
He was nervous to talk to the Vulcan, but kept a sustainable pace to stay behind him.
In front of the office door his final thought before entering was: “there we go.”
And after a break, he entered inside the office, a bit discouraged but also willing to do his job.
