Matthew swallowed one last bite then pushed his bowl aside. “I’m sorry for bringing up a sensitive topic,” he said softly. “And it’s far from stupid. It’s kind of noble.”

Kyle waved a hand dismissively, “Not at all lad, it’s better to talk about it than not. So, where do you see yourself heading after the Academy?”

Matthew eyed the security cadet for a moment. Was that bravado, or honesty? he wondered. He shrugged in response to the question and leaned back.

“Wherever they send me.” He draped one arm over the back of the chair, the other playing with the napkin on the table. “I’m not picky. As long as I get to do science that actually means something.”
