Kyle used a napkin to wipe his hands clean and took a sip of the root beer he’d ordered with the carbonara and relaxed into his seat, “Any ships I’d know?” Anders asked.

Riley shrugged and leaned his arms on the table. “The first was the Endeavour, another Discovery-class like this one. The second was the Titania-class Oberon.” He slurped another spoonful, remembering why he didn’t like eating soups in public.
“All scientific vessels,” he continued, “which is great for a science track cadet.”
He stirred the remaining soup, pulling some beans and sausage from the bottom. “What drew you to security?” he asked before taking another spoonful.

Kyle passed over his plate to one of the servers, “My parents were both security officers in the Dominion War, Dad was in line to take over as the Chief Security Officer of the U.S.S. Nightengale before…,” Anders took a long pause, “They were… kidnapped by a rogue sect of Jem’Hadar towards the end of the war. The report came in on the FNN that two security officers had been executed by said rogue sect in the Imanu System. I was three so couldn’t take care of myself. Luckily, I had an aunt that lived quite close to the family home. Aunt Liza has raised me ever since. When I joined the Academy, I knew I wanted to go into security to live up to their legacy. Eventually, I’d love to move into Command, almost as though I’m continuing their careers for them,” Kyle gave a small laugh, “Sounds stupid, I know.”

Matthew swallowed one last bite then pushed his bowl aside. “I’m sorry for bringing up a sensitive topic,” he said softly. “And it’s far from stupid. It’s kind of noble.”

Kyle waved a hand dismissively, “Not at all lad, it’s better to talk about it than not. So, where do you see yourself heading after the Academy?”
