Full lighting replaced a dim glow with rapid elegance as Lieutenant McMorran swept into the Biochemistry Lab on Deck 4. Various stations and experimental devices lined the walls: cloud chambers and various scanner devices tailored to probing organic matter. The lab was empty. Good.

The CSO claimed a workstation, spreading across it the bagged garments she had brought down from the XO’s hot tub. Turning, she addressed the cadet she had brought with her. “T’Mor, begin thoroughly analysing those glasses.”

As pleased as she was with T’Mor’s performance so far, Aili reckoned they could do with some additional help. Besides, half her job on this ship was to give cadets the opportunities they needed to learn the ropes. The more upsetting moments of the investigation had passed at least. Time to see how he works in a team, she thought. =^=McMorran to Cadet Riley. Report to the Biochemistry Lab.=^=

The CSO approached the already present cadet and observed T’Mor’s activity from over her shoulder. “You will brief Cadet Riley on the situation when he arrives.” Without waiting for a response, McMorran made haste over to the far side of the lab and set to work on something. Exactly what she was busying herself with was unclear.

Matthew stared at the figures on the screen, fingers tapping on the desk surface. Not quite, he thought. He tapped the screen, reviewing the equations.

Five minutes later he leaned back in the chair and groaned. Too. Many. Numbers. My eyes are going to explode. Then his communicator chimed. He listened to the message and practically jumped up as she finished. That’ll be a good change.

He just barely kept himself from running to the lift. A couple minutes later he entered Lab 1. He glanced around and couldn’t immediately spot the CSO, but did see a Vulcan cadet leaned over a lab table. He approached from the side.

“Hi,” he began. “I’m Cadet Riley. Lieutenant McMorran asked me to report here… have you seen her?”
