OOC: Coming from another thread
Mara sat there confused for a second, what had just happened? She hadn’t fully processed the situation before she noticed Sharah slipping away. Figuring she didn’t particularly want to be alone, and Sharah was the only one she knew, Mara decided to grab her book and follow the medical cadet.

“So, where are you off to? Have space for an introverted engineer?”

Sharah nodded, glancing back to see if anyone else was coming. “I haven’t eaten yet. But I was thinking 9-forward. It’ll be a little quieter right now than the mess hall.” She saw Satyol up ahead. “Hey, did you get away from Lt. Rainns? We’re headed to 9-forward, wanna join?”

“Sure!” The Caitian smiled, strolling up to them. Always best to be in a group, he figured. “I just have a bit of statistical reading to do, may as well do it in a relaxing spot.” He had been just heading to his quarters. “In case I forgot to mention it, I’m Satyol Kastyi. Call me Kast.”

Cadet Satyol, Sciences

“Nice to meet you Kast. I”m Sharah Fayth. Well we will make a fine group. Oxton and I both of some reading to do as well.” She started to hold up a book, but realized she didn’t have it with her. “Guess I forgot it. I’ll have to run down and get it from my quarters once we get to deck 9.” Luckily her quarters were on the same deck and 9-forward.

Mara smiled gently at Satyol, holding out her hand for him… That was the appropriate thing to do, right? She figured there wasn’t any turning back from this point.

“I’m Mara Oxton… I don’t actually have any nicknames”

She held up her book for a second, smiling even more.

“It’s about Vulcan culture… Actually, if you don’t mind me asking… Could you teach me anything about Caitian culture or your language if you have one other than common English?”

Mara was very interested in other species’ cultures and languages. On Earth she had only encountered a few Vulcans, and had learned every language she was ever in contact with on Earth. Which was around 34, of course she had to study a lot and spend most of her time reading and listening to recordings of the languages throughout her life. Mara was always a bit gutted over the fact that she wasn’t able to learn as fast as Vulcans could, or store as much information as Androids could. But she always loved learning about other things, even if other information like social interactions had to be pushed aside!

Sharah stopped at a split in the cooridor. “I’ll meet up with you in couple minutes at 9-forward. I left my PaDD in my quarters.” She went down the opposite corridor from 9-forward and around to the right. She stepped inside her quarters and grabbed her research PaDD. She took a deep breath. As hilarious and funny as that had been, she felt a little…off kilter so she took a minute to decide if it was nerves or something else. She wasn’t making that mistake again. She even went so far as to use her medical tricorder, but everything was fine. With her PaDD in hand she left and headed down to 9-forward. Once she entered she looked around for Oxton and Kast. She joined them inside.

The Caitian’s ears and tail flicked as his face pulled into an amused expression. “I would be absolutely delighted to tell you all about Caitian culture, just as soon as I experience any.” He gestured to the earring on his right ear, Bajoran in design. “I was orphaned toward the end of the Dominion War, and uh, I grew up with adopted parents on Bajor. The first time I saw Caitians since I was a kitten was when I got to the Academy.”

He was clearly not upset by the question, taking it all in stride.

Cadet Satyol Kastyi

“Really? You seem to have enjoyed it,” Sharah commented taking into account his amused expression. “Shall we grab a table? I know I”m going to grab food as well.”

Mara smiled sadly, she wasn’t sure how to handle the situation but looked up at Satyol with comfort in her eyes.

“Mind if we experience them together then? I’ll be happy to find a book on Caitian culture somewhere and read it with you?”

She then turned to Sharah and nodded, apparently in her rush to finish the book, she hadn’t actually thought of food for quite a while.

“You know… I really miss my mum making meatloaf for me back home! Maybe I can have that?”

“I’ve never tried…meatloaf? What is it? I like trying new foods,” Sharah said to Oxton. “What about you Kast? Anything in particular you like?”

Turning back to Oxton, “What other cultures have you studied? Any one in particular that you like the most?” Sharah turned to the replicator and input her order, once the tray materialized she stepped aside to let Oxton and Kast get their food.

Mara looked genuinely excited, so many questions! So many questions that she actually knew the answers to!

“Meatloaf is like a collection of different meats with onions and spices, it’s called a meatloaf because it looks like a loaf and us made out of meat!”

Giggling a little bit at her poor attempt at a joke, Mara thought for a second. Which one did she like the most?

“I’ve studied a lot about the different cultures and languages back on Earth. Then Vulcans, Klingons, Bajorans, Andorians… I think my favourite so far are Klingons, I like how they revolve around combat and have clans and how some choose to stray away from that path and join Starfleet. They’re quite interesting!”

She looked over to Satyol before punching a few buttons on the replicator, “Meatloaf, and caramel coffee, 2 and a half sugars!”
She had spent quite a bit of time on The Challenger now, but was still undeniably impressed at how the replicator just replicated everything.
