Walking into Main Engineering felt similar to when she’d first arrived at the Academy. It was exciting, to be sure, but it was also an itch, an urge to just sit down and get working on something. Mel just couldn’t wait to get her hands on a console. Still, that would have to wait. First was the obligatory reporting in to the Chief Engineer.

She watched the hustle and bustle of her soon-to-be fellow engineers for a moment, before locating Lieutenant Vras. Walking over, she waited for him to finish his task, then cleared her throat, “Excuse me, sir. Cadet Mel Booker, reporting for duty.”

“Cadet Booker? Fantastic, right on time,” the Andorian said without looking around. He waved to the table behind him, next to Booker. “Hand me a dilithium frequency modulator, it’s the grey one.”

There were a number of engineering tools and equipment items on the table indicated, and they were all standard grey…

(OOC: Sorry, I couldn’t resist with this character - feel free to play up how your character would handle it, and you can invent the kind of details your character may or may not remember from Academy courses.)

Grey was definitely not the best indicator of which device to pick, but Mel’s brain immediately started running through the details of the various tools she’d used more regularly in the Academy courses . She wasn’t sure she’d used a dilithium frequency modulator before, but a couple of the items on the table were definitely not that leaving two to choose between.

“Uh - blue button or green?”

-Cdt. Mel Booker, Engineer

“Blue,” Keval said, turning around. “You know, that’s one area the Academy doesn’t focus as much on anymore. Ever since warp core recrystalization became the norm, our attention in starship engineering focused on other areas. But if we ever had a breakdown of the the theta-matrix compositor, well…”

Keval put down the piece of equipment he was working on, focusing on Booker. “I’m Lieutenant Keval Vras, chief engineer. And you are Cadet Booker, and… new. Tell me, is this you’re first time working on a starship?”

“Yes sir,” She responded, offering him the device he’d requested moments earlier. “Prior experience has really only been the sims they run us through at the Academy.”

That was, after all, what she was meant to achieve here: gaining experience on a functioning ship. It was exciting, in the same way it had been exciting to get to her first Engineering course.
