Cadet Osten struggled feebly as Lieutenant Tavium caught him, but allowed himself to be lowered to the ground. He dropped the rifle to the floor in front of him and sat with his knees to his chest, arms hugging himself as he shuddered. Wiles’ gaze flickered between focusing on Nijix’s left and right eye as she spoke, then eventually settled on some spot on the floor as he tried to breathe steadily. Closing his eyes did not last long, but Wiles did make multiple attempts at doing so. Inevitably, they would flash back open and dart between the figures standing above and around him.
Should someone attempt to remove the rifle from Cadet Osten’s reach, he would be unlikely to notice or care, now pretty much preoccupied with his feverish symptoms.
(Wiles Osten, Security Cadet)
“Cadet Bennet, I empathize with you. Honestly. So I hate to say this but even if they gave you the all clear, we don’t know what we’re dealing with. You could still be infected and no signs are shown until later. Isn’t it better to be safe than sorry?” Nijix asked, hoping the Cadet’s logic would help her see the point.
While Nijix spoke, she removed Osten’s rifle and additional weapons she might’ve found. Then she stood upright and faced the feline Cadet, the weapons placed on the table and out of anyone’s reach. However, to avoid the conversation coming off as aggressive, Nijix didn’t approach Bennet. The cadet was skittish enough without her drawing close and forcing unwanted comfort.
“While you might not be able to be alone, I have a suggestion. When I find myself in a situation I prefer not to be in, I tend to find a place to sit down. Then I try to tune out everything around me and focus on pacing my breathing. It’s worth a try to calm your thoughts, emotions and regain some peace until this situation is over. Then you can deal with them more directly in your own fashion,” Nijix attempted to look calm, but sincere as possible.
-Lt. Nijix Tavium, CoS
Catt sighed choked a bit on her tears and took a deep breath her ears swiveling to every sound in sickbay. And she opened her eyes to look at Lt. Tavium with a watery look. “Sir. I… am not being very professional.”. And she catches her wildly lashing tail and strokes the tip. ” we are a emotional species. I as much as any other. I had a bad moment when choking. It has left me in a chemically unbalanced state that is uncomfortable in that I never experianced it before. So I am reacting more than thinking.” And Catt rose to her feet again pausing to balance herself. “I will be fine now. “, and she moved herself into a corner away from any others a2nd started fussing with her fur and uniform trying to make herself presentable. The odd upset vocalization escaping her throat dispite her best effofts.

The doors to Sickbay slid open and the Counselor stepped through. Looking around, he spied Dr. Torrirs the XO and said “Sir. Doctor. I am understand the Away Team had some difficulties. I am here to assist, if you need it.”
Korczak, CNS
“Counselor,” Torrirs seemed almost grateful to see him. It was clear both Bennet and Osten were suffering from psychological ailments, and they were not certified in the area, nor did they believe it fair for Nijix to be hounded, despite her obvious consideration for the Cadets. “I do believe Cadet Osten and Cadet Bennet are suffering from a form of psychological trauma. Lt. Tavium has been trying to calm them down; I’m not certain of her success.”
Dr. Torrirs, CMO
Catt sniffeled miserably from her corner of the sickbay. Squatting on her haunches her ears moving independantly to track every noise. Her tail lashing about wildly. She looked up and over at the councilors voice. And blushed on every surface not covered in fur. She had finally managed to talk to him in a manner where she didn’t have a meltdown and here she was falling apart again. More to the point he might even have seen her as her. The doctors word sat flat .
“I “, her voice squeeked and she cleared her throat, ” I am fine. SEE to Osten.” And she took a few deep breaths.”Sending the samples to sciences will do nothing useful.
I am the botanist, xenobotonist. Biologist and xenobiologist, and I am stuck here . So sending the sample will see them sit in storage till I am released and can study them.
I was shaken and scared and elements of my Caitan biology have triggered a period of intence emotioal instability I was unprepared for. I shouldn’t be effected by this. It’s impossible. But I am. “, her tone became stronger as she spoke, it still held a strong hint of embarrassement. “I need a science station properly configure fot botony.” She said standing up using a hand on the wall to balance shaky legs. She snatched the hand back in pain and steadied herself with the other hand. “Maybe a hand brace and a painkiller. As well.”, she said in a softer tone. She sighed and waited for someone to argue. She was a cadet in a room full of senior officers she had no business taking a tone.Cadet Catt Bennet. Sciences
T’Kam entered shortly after the counselor calmly walking through the doors, giving a moment of observation of the crew, silently hoping that his cadet wasn’t in any terrible condition, and a nod towards the XO. “Commander.” Turning his attention towards the doctor. “Doctor, if I can lend my knowledge to help get down to the cause, I would be happy to assist. Cadet Bennet should hopefully have some samples of whatever was in there. I have also forwarded my scans on the biomass lining the ship to sickbay as well.” He glanced back over towards the group isolated in the quarantine field. “Are they alright..?”
Lt. T’Kam (CSO)
“Lieutenant. Would it be possible to a detail scanner to pass through into the quarantine area? And maybe a better console that the Cadet can help with the analysis? We don’t know what we encountered. I’d prefer to only keep things coming in, and not going out of this area without going through full decontamination. And who knows what it will do to the samples if it goes through that.” Max was trying not to show any fear, but he was nervous. Whatever had gotten them had moved fast, and they needed to know what it was.
Lillian Noted the counsellor Entering but said nothing just making note of his position.
Osten’s condition had continued to deteriorate over the last few minutes, the fever spiking and shivers setting in.
Richards wasn’t much better. The wound on his neck began to split, puss leaking out of the cut and turning necrotic.

Lillian was still armed and on Guard with in the Field Now that the counsellor had arrived Lillian took this moment to speck to the CoS about what best to do next she stepped toward him but only a half steep not wanting to put any of the more on edge Cadets on guard or set them off.
“Sir, What is the best way to proceed?” Lillian was not sure if she herself was affected by the same thing as the others or if her inability to think was just the strangeness of her first away mission.
“All so what of the missing Cadet” Lillian had forgotten his name and to be honest she was sure she had never met him.Lillian Anderson Cadet security
“For now Cadet, keep an eye on everyone. Let us know if you see anything out of the ordinary. But if you start to feel under the weather, let us know. Understood?
“As for the missing cadet, that is up to the Captain. We can’t really be of help until we get cleared by the doc.”
Cmdr. Harkness - XO
“Rivera!” Obiah called out to a Medical Cadet, gesturing him over. “I need you to run scans over each of the gathered individuals. Make sure they aren’t showing any internal or external signs of illness–anything out of the ordinary, even if it’s as simple as elevated blood pressure or sweats, run it by me. Capische?” They handed him a medical scanner. “You can do this, Rivera.”
“Aye..” The cadet paused a second, taking in all Torrirs had ordered. Glancing down at the scanner, he nodded. “Commander..would you like to go first?” He shyly approached Harkness.
Catt’s eyes went wide and she choked on a laugh. ” I am a idiot Sorry. ” She said to anyone who looked her way. “We don’t need to bring in gear. The Challenger is outfitted with holoemitters everywhere. We can just create what we need right here and get rid of it without risk.to anyone outside med bay.” Her tail was still lashing about giving the lie to the calm fascade she was trying to portray. “I am going to spend a great deal of my free time in a hot spring when we get out of here.” She muttered quietly to herself. She sighed heavily and took the plant samples out of her sample bag. “I didn’t get any of the thorns. But I have various samples of what covered the walls. It may give us a baseline on what we are dealing with. Including the plant matter I choked on. The saliva should of interacted with it. So we could potentially extrapulate what long term exposure might do to a person. Though not being human it might react differently to me than to humans exposed.”, and giving the computer orders she set up a compact workbench with scanners and equipment for her specialization in as out of the way a corner as she could find..

IC: Nijix felt a bit guilty. She hadn’t meant to make the Cadet feel ashamed about her reaction, but it was too late. Any words she said, she assumed would be on deaf ears. She made a note to call the feline Cadet to her office and talk with her after this was all over.
She checked on Osten again when she noticed his shivering had increased. Her hand snatched an extra tricorder and began to scan his system for answers. She mentally thanked her past life as a medical officer and her drive for answers.
As the conversation occurred between others, Nijix’s voice spoke out.
“While we’re talking about how to help them, can we do what we can for the injured? Osten’s condition has gotten worse. His fever is spiking now.”
She didn’t think it was necessary to tell anyone what happened to the brain under a high fever for a long time. Her eyes glanced over to Richards to spot the signs of puss and discoloration of necrotic tissue.
“Kiernan, 200mg of naproxen for Osten, pronto!” Torrirs called out to another cadet, waving them towards Osten to start treatment. “Run another scan on him. I want to know everything that’s happening.”
“And Richard’s wound is oozing puss and going necrotic. Someone needs to get a sample and examine it. It might give us some information.”
With caution, she began to slide her arm underneath Osten’s and pull him to the nearest biobed. If he resisted at all or showed worsening, she would stop immediately. If he didn’t, then she would’ve moved him onto the bed and stepped back to let the medical officers take over. With two suffering patients and the samples, Nijix hoped they could unravel the mystery.
-Lt. Nijix Tavium, CoS
“Everyone who isn’t Osten, Nijix or Richards.. please get calmly see to Doctor Rivera; he will scan each of you and confirm you are not infected.” Obiah turned, surveying the group. “Lt. T’Kam, do you mind assisting me gathering a sample off of Richards’? The necrotic tissue needs to be removed, the puss cleared out so the wound can be sealed. However much you need is yours.”
“Nijix,” Torrirs shifted their attention to the CoS. “You’re doing great. Whatever you can do to keep him calm will help us a lot. We’re not yet sure what is going on, but we’ll treat what we do understand until science analyses the samples.”
Nodding to her, Obiah left to retrieve surgical equipment to begin removing the necrotic tissue. Once tissue went necrotic, they knew it futile to try and save it–but they could stop it from spreading and that’s what they planned to do.
Dr. Torrirs, CMO
Cadet Osten had certainly declined quickly. He was nonverbal now, consumed by the fever and chills. He was unnaturally sweaty, and Nijix’s arm would likely become damp from reaching underneath him. Wiles’ golden uniform started to turn a few shades darker where it was touched as the moisture soaked through. His hair clung to his forehead in dark streaks, contrasting its usual light poofiness.
Wiles did not resist Leuitenant Tavium as she brought him to the biobed, but he was almost dead weight, having become weak and lightheaded in the process of rising up from the floor. Eventually, though, Wiles was seated on the biobed, where he struggled to keep himself upright but resisted laying down.
As Cadet Kiernan approached with the hypospray of 200mg of naproxen, Cadet Osten stiffened and leaned backwards. If the other cadet did not take the hint and got too close to Osten, he would pitch forward and swing at Kiernan, attempting to fight the doctor off and potentially sending himself tumbling off of the edge of the biobed in the process.
Perhaps Nijix or others that were watching him closely could tell that Osten was in a pretty severe “fight” mode. However, he was choosing these fights carefully. Cadets Bennet, Kiernan, and Richards (all of whom he had acted aggressively towards) did not share a few key traits with Commander Harkness or Lieutenant Tavium (who Osten had seemed to avoid confrontation with).
