Cadet Osten stopped in the doorway to the Chief of Security’s office, a foot scooting backwards as he saw she was in the middle of eating. He resisted the urge to back out of the room entirely. After a short pause, he moved forward quickly, holding the PaDD with both hands. He looked stressed, brow furrowed and lips pulled down.

“That looks good,” he offered awkwardly as he sat down, then moved his eyes downward to stare at the report. He hunched forward slightly.

“I can order some from the replicator, if you would like?” Nijix offered to be polite, unsure if the Cadet had eaten or not.

She noticed his anxiety causing her to become concerned.

He spoke nervously. “Lieutenant, I have a report about the inventory inspection the quartermaster requested in cargo bay 3, I mean it’s related, but I submitted the logistical report to him already, this part of the report is just more security related and also potentially requires disciplinary action, at least that’s my assumption, I don’t mean to presume what your decision will be, but that’s why I wanted to discuss it with you.”

He took a deep breath and looked up at Tavium. “Sorry, Lieutenant. I suppose my first question is: does the Challenger have a policy regarding hazing or initiation-type activities?”

“We do as long as proof is provided. If we assumed everyone’s accusations were true, without evidence, several good Cadets would be locked up whenever they had a disagreement,” Nijix looked at him harder.

“I feel like there’s a certain reason you bring up this particular question, isn’t there?”

Wiles gulped. Proof. Of course, of course he needed proof. But “locked up”? Was that really what he wanted to happen to Hawlane? He once again resisted the urge to avoid the conversation altogether, to make up some excuse about “just being curious” and flee the room.

Cadet Osten set his jaw and spoke slowly, carefully. “I believe that I discovered a hazing ritual of sorts orchestrated by some of the senior cadets, involving manipulating new crew members into stealing feijoa from cargo bay three because it is an act of subordination meant to be an offense against the captain, and therefore authority.” He paused, then clarified: “They’re his favorite fruit.”

Hurriedly, he added, “I suppose I wanted your advice on how to proceed. I have circumstantial evidence but nothing concrete.” He crossed one leg over the other and hugged the PaDD to his chest, eyeing Nijix in anticipation.

Nijix settled back. Her expression was firm and serious, seeming to hint she wasn’t pleased by the findings. After a moment passed, her lips cracked into a smile. Her expression fit the phrase ‘the cat who ate the canary’ very well at that point.

“Pranksters. I actually know of one way to deal with them, even before I became a Chief of Security. It is a little underhanded, but it does drive the moral home and gives them a taste of their own behavior,” Nijix began then paused.

“If you’re not against working around the rules with your Chief and the Captain?”

Wiles blinked. Then, he slowly raised an eyebrow. “I’m… not sure what you have in mind, Lieutenant. But, I will certainly defer to your judgement. Especially if you feel as if there is a particularly potent way of getting the point across.”

After a pause to bite his lip, Wiles added: “I have the names of some of the cadets that I suspect committed the larceny. But I hope you agree that we should really be focusing our efforts on the ringleaders of the operation. The other cadets were coerced, after all.”
