It had been an eventful day in Sickbay. With everything that had occurred in the attack on the USS Challenger, many of the medical recruits had been dragged into action without oversight and supervision and it was fair to say that pretty much all of them involved did spectacularly and coped well under the immense pressure. All of them had done their best to treat what was in front of them and all of them had proven themselves capable hands.
As such, a night of de-stressing was in order. Nine Forward, the official crew lounge of the USS Challenger down on deck nine would be the watering hole for the medical teams to relax and recouperate after a brutal turn of events. Drinks were flowing, people were talking and everyone was attempting to forget about the day’s events as to protect their own mental health.
What happens in Nine Forward, stays in Nine Forward.
Cadet Zachariah Conway - Medical
Vince had retreated to the solace of his quarters to review the day’s events. Sickbay had been put to the test, and so had his newly onboarded cadets, whom he was extremely proud of. He recalled his earlier conversation with Cadet Conway, where they discussed how someone might react in a real-life situation and whether Vincent trusted them to do their job. Conway stood out in his mind due to his rigid adherence to protocol. During their exchange, Vincent had asked if the cadet could be trusted in a medical emergency. Conway’s thoughtful response highlighted the uncertainty of hypothetical situations, emphasising that true trust and capability could only be proven in actual emergencies. This conversation made Vincent ponder the broader implications of trust in their profession, realising that while training was crucial, the deeper trust between mentor and mentee was equally important.
From all the reports the nurses and officers had filed, it was clear that the cadets had proved themselves, even though none had yet submitted their own reports. Vince was aware of the social gathering organised as a detox and unwind, something he agreed with wholeheartedly. Closing his system, he looked at the time and decided to see if anyone had joined in with the gathering. Mental health was as important as physical health, and social events provided a release for unspoken stresses.

Time zone: GMT0 | UKZachariah had never experienced the joys of Nine Forward before.
However, after the ships encounter with the Orions he was in desperate need of some down time and when it had become apparent that the medical crew were all gathering in the lounge, he decided to pay a visit. He heeded the words of Lieutenant Yancey, that ‘A ship is only as strong as the crew that sails it’ and he heeded the Cheif Medical Officers advice around making friends.
He had set up in the corner of Nine Forward with an Aldebaran Whiskey to hand. He had never been much of a drinker, however he understood that alcohol was a great way to be social. He also didn’t much mind an Aldebaran Whiskey, the strong green drink was quite appealing to his pallet. He had first tried it on Earth and it had been his staple drink ever since.
The young recruit waited, anticipating more people’s arrivals soon.

Ethan moved into nine forward, humming under his breath. Moving up to the bar he caught the attention of the bartender. “An Orion hurricane please.” Getting a slight side eye in return he winced. “Too soon?”
Scanning the room, while his drink was made he spotted Cadet Conway set up in the corner he caught his eye and raised his hand in greeting, intending to head over as soon as he could.
Cadet Ethan Koerner
Doctor USS ChallengerBejal had been in the cadet’s quarters repeatedly checking over his draft of a report. A flat and smooth stone moving swiftly between his fingers as he read. This was his first official report about his first true medical emergency. He had spent the last few hours drafting and editing it over and over again trying to not spare a single detail. This went on for a bit more until the stone eventually slipped from his fingers clattering against the metal ground. Breaking Bejal out of his hyperfocus and allowing him to note the time. He was aware that a social event had been proposed. Picking the worry stone back up and moving it between his fingers again he glanced at the quarters door. Both in the academy and at Trill Polytech he had never really attended social gatherings. At the time he felt studying was the higher priority but now pouring himself into this report was not going to ease the tension in his muscles since the attack.
With a unsure sigh Bejal stood up and headed down to Nine Forward. Medical was not the only department hit hard by the attack and as a result there was already quite a few crewman in the bar making it rather loud as Bejal entered. The Trill cadet was somewhat startled by the volume but continued on to the bar. “Bartender, you wouldn’t happen to have any amber shots or Trill Wansat?” Pausing for a moment just to get a very confused look from the bartender Bejal started over. “Ah… just get me a beer then. Something brewed on Trill preferably Earth beers tend to be a little too bitter.” The bartender still looked at him oddly but did get him his beer.
As he was turning to leave the bar he spotted Cadet Koerner waiting for his own drink. “Hello there, nice to see you in slightly less hectic circumstances.” This was attempted as both a greeting and humorous breaker but really came off more rigid and awkward.
Cadet Bejal Sozenn
Doctor USS ChallengerNoticing Bejal Ethan turned slightly, a wide smile on his face. “A hello! Yes i was hoping to get a chance to talk with you before we had any medical emergencies to worry about. Names Ethan.” He held out his hand for Bejal to shake. “How are settling in? I ran into an Exocomp security officer earlier. Absolutely lovely! Couldn’t get them to stop talking about all their antics on Risa!”

Bejal was taken aback momentarily by the fellow cadets cheery demeanor but quickly returned the earth gesture which was very common in the Federation. “Hello, names Bejal. I am settling in quit well, the ship appears to be up to specifications. Haven’t really gotten to meet any of the other crew, though the head nurse seems nice. Mostly just been working on my report, though I have also been reading this fascinating comparative xenobotanical study comparing different grains from different planets. For example grains we have on Trill have a higher starch content then Terran grains. ” Bejal had been using his beer more as something to fidget with during this conversation more then a drink just yet. “Ah forgive me for going off there a bit. I take it you’ve been settling in well?.”
Zachariah had witnessed the other cadets make their entry into Nine Forward.
He’d also witnessed the Lieutenant make his way into the crew lounge. He’d offered a little head nod to his department head but didn’t make any sort of move towards him or move to engage in conversation with the Chief Medical Officer. Instead he had continued to endulge in his whiskey that he’d been sipping on since he’d entered the crew lounge earlier on.
He’d kept quiet, watching the medical crew talking with each other.. He’d continued sipping his drink quietly whilst they had been chatting away. He’d seen Koerner’s little indicating head gesture but he was also quite greatful that Sozenn had distracted the young cadet. Honestly, he wanted to be left alone to mull over his thoughts. He’d had a long day, serving as both a medical officer and a security officer. He was exhausted and Star Fleet had asked a lot of him.
He was sure they’d engage with him if they wanted to include him.

Vincent always found the entry of a new intake fascinating, the social aspect of different species coming together from routine different parts of the federation and even training establishments saw for a varied range of social groups forming. He didn’t make any attempt to join in but if conversation ever found its way he was more than happy to join in.
