Ensign Akala Helbrin materialized in Sickbay. Ensign Seno, one of the nurses, immediately began running scans and whistled at the extent of the injuries, including the head injury, ribs and leg. “It’s okay, Akala, we’ve got you,” she said in her most reassuring manner.

Just as the cadets were arriving from the holodeck, the ship shook in three separate times, spaced by only seconds. The lights in Sickbay flickered, but remained on… for now. Ensign Helbrin moaned softly but didn’t open her eyes.

Having left the bridge in relatively good shape with no major injuries to address, Vince entered sickbay with a sense of urgency. He was aware of the ongoing situation on Deck 5. “Nurse, what are the preliminary reports showing?” he asked, his tone focused and professional as he prepared to dive into the work at hand.

“Head injury, fractured ribs threatening the lungs, and fractures to both legs. Looks like the cadets healed a laceration to the head, but were wise to beam her out,” the nurse replied.

OOC: Going to sync this thread with the rest of the sim threads. Sozenn and Koerner likely would have experienced the attack as they were approaching Sickbay.

Cadet Sozenn entered sickbay still finding his footing from the last few shakes. “Too risky to move manually with the fractures. Cadet Koerner found the Ensign first in the halo deck and had her beamed out. The laceration was about the only thing we could handle outside of medbay, still underlying head trauma there though.” The Cadet paused to set the emergency medical kit he had been carrying down. His eyes glancing up at the flickering lights of med bay before glancing back to the Chief Medical Officer.

“Is the ship going to be ok?”

“The ship will be fine—that’s for the engineers to worry about. Ours is the people inside it,” Vince said, his tone shifting to one of focused determination. “Good work getting her here, but let’s continue with the care. Prepare a set of neurostimulators and cortical monitors for the head injury. We’ll need osteogenic stimulators and thoracic hyposprays for the fractured ribs that are threatening the lungs. Finally, for the fractures to both legs, have the osteoregeneration kits and analgesic hyposprays ready.”

He moved with purpose, gesturing for the cadet to follow him. “In addition, make sure we have the necessary medications: an ample supply of tricordrazine for general stabilization, inaprovaline for cardiovascular support, metorapan for pain management and a splint.”

As the cadet worked efficiently, Vince continued, “Remember, precision and calmness are key in these situations. Each tool and medication has a specific purpose. Neurostimulators will help monitor and, if necessary, stimulate neural activity to prevent further brain damage. Cortical monitors are crucial for tracking brain function.”

He pointed to the osteogenic stimulators. “These will promote bone growth and healing for the rib fractures, while thoracic hyposprays deliver medication directly to the lungs to prevent collapse or further injury. The osteoregeneration kits will help us set and mend the leg fractures, the analgesic hyposprays will provide immediate pain relief and the splint… well its a splint”

Vince glanced at the cadet, noting his focused expression. “Stay sharp, Cadets. In this line of work, your readiness and composure can make all the difference.”

As they worked, the most immediate response was for Akala’s respirations to level out once the lung was re-inflated. But Sozenn would notice a small alert from the cortical monitors showing that her intercranial pressure was rising.

Vincent’s primary concern was Akala’s respiratory system. Immersed in his work, he didn’t notice the small alert flashing on the monitor. Using a precision laser scalpel, he carefully made an incision over her ribs. With practiced efficiency, he employed a dermal regenerator to part the tissue and expose the damaged area.

He then used an osteoregenerator to mend the fractured ribs, ensuring they aligned perfectly. Vincent delicately checked for any signs of compression or internal damage to her lungs.

Ethan moved into sickbay, quickly moving to drop off his emergency kit and help with the Ensign. Seeing Cadet Sozenn and Lieutenant Yancy already busy with the treatment, and with too many doctors spoiling the medicine, he turned to one of the nurses.

“With the shakes im assuming we’ll be expecting more incidents. Where do you need me?”

Nurse Harlow nodded. “We actually have a few more cases already here. Less critical, though,” she said, leading him away from the surgical bed to the five standard ones.

There were two patients to pick from: Ensign S’tal, a Vulcan male who appeared at the outset to have a very sprained ankle, and Lt (j.g) Stacy Garrison, one of the engineers, who had some significant, but not life threatening burns to her face and chest. They were bad enough to have burned through her uniform and to her skin, but were no worse than secondary burns.

Bejal nodded, feeling reassured by Vincent’s words and following his lead as he began treatment. Soaking in Vincent’s instructions and making mental notes of everything as he followed along diligently. Despite his momentary worry about the ship he threw himself into the work with his usual determination and focus, working in tandem with the CMO. As Vincent focused on the respiratory system Bejal gathered the necessary supply’s and set up the various monitors and neurostimulators. Seeing the alert pop up he would catch Vincent’s attention. “Intracranial pressure is rising should we administer something to reduce possible swelling?”

Vincent, absorbed in his work on Akala’s respiratory system, responded quickly to Bejal’s comment. “Good catch, Bejal,” he said, his tone calm and focused. He finished aligning the fractured ribs and ensured there was no internal damage to the lungs with a final scan.

“Yes, administer a dose of mannitol to reduce the swelling” Vincent had carefully selected mannitol for this critical situation. He knew its dehydrating properties were crucial in treating patients with elevated intracranial pressure (ICP). Derived from mannose sugar, mannitol worked by increasing plasma osmotic pressure, which, in turn, helped reduce ICP through osmotic diuresis. This mechanism made it an effective choice, as it drew excess fluid from the brain’s tissues into the bloodstream, thereby relieving pressure. Vincent’s training and experience had taught him that mannitol’s rapid action could be a lifesaver in such high-stakes scenarios, providing the best chance to stabilize Akala quickly.

Vincent glanced at the monitor. Making another snap decision “Bejal, also prepare an osmotic pressure reducer. If the tri-ox doesn’t bring the swelling down, we’ll need to intervene more aggressively to relieve the pressure.”

Bejal nodded listening to Vincent intently as he prepared and administered the mannitol. He was focused and precise in his dosage and administration of the drug. Once it was administered he quickly and effectively prepared the osmotic pressure reducer. Grateful to benefit from Vincent’s experience Bejal watched the monitors to determine if the drug was having any effect.

Ethan nodded and picked up a medical tricorder from a nearby work station. Stepping over the two patients he smiled at them. “Rough day? What happened to each of you?” Gesturing for the Lt. to start while scanning them and moving onto the Ensign once the scan was complete.
