“I don’t think so,” she said. “We restocked before we left the starbase, and people-wise, everyone’s doing well. Always a bit of chaos, but that’s expected with this many things at the same time I guess.” She laughed nervously and bent over to pick up the PADDs. “Do you have any notes for me on what I should be doing when I’m left in charge, since you’re here?”

“Nope I don’t think so. Carry on Cadet,” Aaron said as he looked around the science labs. He was going to have to talk to Lis to get a better feeling of the department.

As the captain looked about, the aforementioned lieutenant stepped into the labs. Noting the captain’s presence, Demil quickly snapped to attention. “Good afternoon, sir. I didn’t realize you had planned to stop by the labs, I apologize for my absence. What can I do for you, captain?” His eyes scanned the lab as he spoke, taking in all that was happening and checking it against his mental checklist.

“Oh nothing was planned Lieutenant. The seemingly endless amounts of paperwork finally took their toll on me, and I decided to mount an escape,” he said with a chuckle. “But we haven’t had a chance to really talk since you came on board, and I wanted to check-in on both the labs, and you as well Lieutenant. Perhaps we could go somewhere, more, private?”

“Yes, sir,” Demil agreed, walking to open the door to his office. He stood by the doorway as it slid open, allowing the captain to proceed him into the room. It was cluttered, but in an organized fashion, with everything perfectly within regulations. The office had a long window along the back wall as well as doors that connected to each lab near the office. Pushed to the corner was Demil’s small, standard issue desk that held his workstation and a handful of trinkets he’d obtained from previous postings. Behind the desk were neat stacks of boxes that evidently contained the rest of Demil’s belongings to set up, leaving just enough room to squeeze in and out of the desk. Towards the center of the room Demil had placed a small silver conference table inlaid with displays, ringed by an oval of chairs. As the captain entered, Demil pulled out one of these chairs to offer him.

“Thank you,” Aaron said as he took the offered chair. “I wanted to take a chance to get to chat with you a bit more openly since we haven’t had much opportunity since you joined the crew. How are you settling in so far?” Aaron had taken a quick look around the office as he came in. He had noted the boxes behind the desk and made a mental note to either get the Lieutenant some more off time to finish unpacking, or a couple of shelves to put more stuff on.
