T’Saie placed her Vulcan mocha on her desk, leaning in on her arms slightly. “We’ll help you get to your goal,” she began, “I have no doubt that you will give it your all during your time on Challenger,” she continued, clearly easing herself away from the cold, sometimes intimidating demeanour she usually drops on all of her cadets, “I’m know you’re aware of this however, be sure to use this opportunity to get used to life in Starfleet, on a Starship. This may be one of the best placements you could receive..” she spoke, now rather calmly.
After a slightly pause she leaned back into her chair slightly, still maintaining a formal posture, “What do you know about Challenger?” she asked, continuing to open the conversation further with the cadet.
● T’Saie - Lt. Jr. Grade, Chief Medical Officer, Nurse Practitioner. ●
Miya nodded with determination when Lieutenant T’Saie said she expected her to commit wholeheartedly during her time aboard Challenger. That was a given! The chief medical officer seemed to unbend slightly as she spoke, showing a little - not emotion, but perhaps enthusiasm? Miya wasn’t sure - when she mentioned adjusting to life aboard a starship. That was clearly going to be a key part of the placement; she hadn’t experienced spacesickness on her journey from Bajor to Earth, but there were many other issues which could challenge Starfleet officers in space and spending time aboard a ship would no doubt bring some of them to the fore.
Just as long as they don’t affect me! she thought, sending a silent prayer to the Prophets for their protection.
The lieutenant’s next question didn’t surprise her; she had expected something of the sort. “I’ve gone over the ship’s schematics several times, sir, since I found out I was getting posted here. The Challenger is a Discovery-class starship which can be equipped with different types of modules, depending on its mission - including preparing it to deal with large-scale medical emergencies or evacuations. It has a complement of 140 officers and crew - give or take - and the sickbay has some excellent equipment; I’m really excited to join the team here. But there’s just one thing …” Mia frowned, wondering if this was the best time to bring it up, but the lieutenant had asked what she knew about the ship! She took a deep breath. “The schematics mentioned this, but I’m not sure if the designers were teasing us or not. Does the Executive Officer really have a hot tub?”

T’Saie’s face discreetly lit up at Miya’s final question, “I do believe so.” she responded, “Although I’ve never seen it myself.”
She shuffled herself in her seat, “Excellent preparation, your knowledge surprises me. Particularly as it is your first posting.” She picked up her Vulcan mocha again, taking a sip, “Information, especially regarding the crew compliment is quite important to know. This way you can make an educated prediction on how busy your day will be and the level of casualties you should expect in a worse-case-scenario.” she reminded the cadet.
Placing her Mocha down again she moved onto the final question, “I’m aware you’re aiming to become a counsellor after you’ve completed your degree. However, is there any specific experience you wish to gain from Challenger during your stay?”
● T’Saie - Lt. Jr. Grade, Chief Medical Officer, Nurse Practitioner. ●
She couldn’t help it; she chuckled briefly at the lieutenant’s words, not just the admission that the hot tub existed but at T’Saie’s disclaimer that she hadn’t seen it in person. Miya suppressed the rest of her laughter, though her lips remained curved in a smile. A hot tub! Aboard a starship! Whatever next?
The next piece of information was also unexpected, though not for the same reason. The lieutenant was surprised she knew so much about the Challenger? Who wouldn’t want to know as much as possible about the ship which would be their home, their place of work and - hopefully - their final step along the road to graduating from Starfleet Academy?
“I, er, always like to be prepared, sir,” she said, which was a bit of an understatement; at the Academy, her friends knew Miya liked to absorb as much knowledge as possible about a given situation. “You study too much!” they’d teased, encouraging her to leave her PaDD for a game of handball or a walk around the campus, but she’d always returned to her work later until she was satisfied she knew enough. “I’ll remember that point about the crew. Thank you,” she added aloud.
Her preparations for boarding Challenger had also included thinking of an answer to the lieutenant’s next question. “Yes, sir! I’d like to gain more experience in xenomedicine - I have a good grounding in human medicine, now, but I’d like to work with other species if possible. I hope we don’t have too many emergencies while I’m here, but I would welcome the chance to take part in responding to emergencies or accidents as I feel that’s an area where I could do with more experience. Also,” she added, “I’m interested in the operational functions of a starship’s sickbay - how doctors, nurses, medical technicians and researchers all work together; who to call on when; where the expertise lies.” Miya shrugged. “While I absolutely would like to be a counsellor, eventually, there’s no guarantee I will make the grade and I want to be able to make an informed choice about my future, wherever that takes me.”
Behind her words was the principle which underpinned her life: The Prophets sent me here. I serve their will; I have to do my best for them.
