“Psychology, yes, sir. I used to work with fellow Bajorans, supporting them through challenging times in their lives, and I became interested in psychology as a result - not just for my own race, but for all the others in Starfleet.” Miya hesitated, then decided not to say any more about the role her religion played in her life; sometimes people couldn’t understand that a person could believe in both medical science and the Prophets. Now was not the time to try to explain it.

She was relieved to discover that the lieutenant was the elusive Chief Medical Officer that she’d set out to find. The open office door must have hid the nameplate which would have confirmed her status. “I’m delighted to meet you, Lieutenant T’Saie. I’m looking forward to working with you and learning from you during my posting here.” Her words were genuine; she knew she still had a lot to learn. The Prophets must have sent her here for a reason, after all; she owed it to them, to her parents and to

She afforded a cold yet calming stare for the cadet as they spoke, nodding slightly throughout to commend their polite demeanour.

T’Saie was taken aback slightly however, non-Vulcan counsellors didn’t usually bode well with her or usually any other Vulcans bar Challenger’s counsellor, Vanessa, who’s company she found most tolerable. She also understood the importance of maintaining the mental health of the crew, particularly those who aren’t as apt at controlling their emotions.

“A noble profession,” she began, pondering how to respond. “You are here to complete your degree in Medicine before you move on to psychology?” quizzed T’Saie, taking a sip of her Mocha, curious about the process of becoming a Starfleet Counsellor.

The lieutenant’s manner did indicate she had Vulcan heritage, Miya thought, sipping her water to give herself something to focus on. T’Saie’s calm, almost haughty regard was reminiscent of one of her instructors from the Academy, a Vulcan captain who always seemed to be assessing everyone, no matter what the occasion. Her speech patterns were also similar.

She brought her attention back to the lieutenant as she asked another question. “Yes, sir - I have to finish my medical degree first, hopefully with this final placement aboard the Challenger. If all goes well, I’ll still have to gain more experience - and more qualifications, of course - but I am hopeful I’ll be able to attain these and become a counsellor as quickly as possible. I’m prepared to work hard, whatever posting I’m given, as I know it’s not a simple role to fulfil.” Miya wanted her new department head to understand that she was committed to completing her medical training. There were many more postings available to medical staff than to counsellors, after all.

T’Saie placed her Vulcan mocha on her desk, leaning in on her arms slightly. “We’ll help you get to your goal,” she began, “I have no doubt that you will give it your all during your time on Challenger,” she continued, clearly easing herself away from the cold, sometimes intimidating demeanour she usually drops on all of her cadets, “I’m know you’re aware of this however, be sure to use this opportunity to get used to life in Starfleet, on a Starship. This may be one of the best placements you could receive..” she spoke, now rather calmly.

After a slightly pause she leaned back into her chair slightly, still maintaining a formal posture, “What do you know about Challenger?” she asked, continuing to open the conversation further with the cadet.

Miya nodded with determination when Lieutenant T’Saie said she expected her to commit wholeheartedly during her time aboard Challenger. That was a given! The chief medical officer seemed to unbend slightly as she spoke, showing a little - not emotion, but perhaps enthusiasm? Miya wasn’t sure - when she mentioned adjusting to life aboard a starship. That was clearly going to be a key part of the placement; she hadn’t experienced spacesickness on her journey from Bajor to Earth, but there were many other issues which could challenge Starfleet officers in space and spending time aboard a ship would no doubt bring some of them to the fore.

Just as long as they don’t affect me! she thought, sending a silent prayer to the Prophets for their protection.

The lieutenant’s next question didn’t surprise her; she had expected something of the sort. “I’ve gone over the ship’s schematics several times, sir, since I found out I was getting posted here. The Challenger is a Discovery-class starship which can be equipped with different types of modules, depending on its mission - including preparing it to deal with large-scale medical emergencies or evacuations. It has a complement of 140 officers and crew - give or take - and the sickbay has some excellent equipment; I’m really excited to join the team here. But there’s just one thing …” Mia frowned, wondering if this was the best time to bring it up, but the lieutenant had asked what she knew about the ship! She took a deep breath. “The schematics mentioned this, but I’m not sure if the designers were teasing us or not. Does the Executive Officer really have a hot tub?”

[Cadet Ven Miya]

T’Saie’s face discreetly lit up at Miya’s final question, “I do believe so.” she responded, “Although I’ve never seen it myself.”

She shuffled herself in her seat, “Excellent preparation, your knowledge surprises me. Particularly as it is your first posting.” She picked up her Vulcan mocha again, taking a sip, “Information, especially regarding the crew compliment is quite important to know. This way you can make an educated prediction on how busy your day will be and the level of casualties you should expect in a worse-case-scenario.” she reminded the cadet.

Placing her Mocha down again she moved onto the final question, “I’m aware you’re aiming to become a counsellor after you’ve completed your degree. However, is there any specific experience you wish to gain from Challenger during your stay?”
