When she popped it out, it took everything Ben had in him to resist the impulse to reach out and give it a closer examination. Luckily, she reattached it rather quickly. “So that helps you hear? Without it you can’t hear at all?” he asked, craning his head a little bit, unable to curve his curiosity completely.

“Uh, I don’t think so? Unless you count staying awake during Professor Yovok’s seminars on Quantum Geophysics, that’s pretty hard to do,” he asked with a grin. The vulcan professor was notorious at the Academy for his strict adherence to discipline and his unforgiving monotone voice. “Can you modify it? I bet it lets you hear even better than regular ears, or at least pick up sub and ultra sonic ranges.”

Carmen was rather entertained by her fellow cadet’s interest in her hearing, most people didn’t really notice her hearing aids at all, and if even they did they didn’t ask questions. She shook her head at his question. “Nope, I’m totally deaf. I’ve been told that if you listen real closely, I speak a little bit weird because of the ‘aids.”
She smiled when he asked about modifications. “Yeah, they can do all sorts of stuff. I can hear both higher and lower than most humanoids, and things that are quieter. And if something is too loud, it automatically lowers the sound. It’s also hooked up to all my equipment, and my communicator.”

“Have you had any space sickness, nausea, headaches, migraines, or any other symptoms?” she asked, moving back to the task on hand.

“Nope, not that I can recall,” Benem answered and quickly returned to the subject he was interested. It wasn’t everyday that you met somebody so interesting! “Do you think you could use that device to echolocate?”

“Many people get space sick, especially on their first long-term stay on a starship, so if any symptoms arise please drop by and let me know. It’s better to get treatment right away than suffer in silence.”

“Echo-locate?” she repeated, thinking. “I’ve never tried too, but I’d guess I could.” Carmen popped one of her aids out again, looking at it. “I’d have to learn how to hear the echoes, but the aids could definitely pick up the sound.”
She offered the device for Ben to look at, having picked up on his earlier desire to examine it.

As she held it out, she yet again pushed the conversation back to his medical evaluation. “Do you have any allergies or sensitives that should go on file?”
