“None that I know of,” he answered. “I mean, once I was diagnosed with a pretty serious case of amazing, but I believe it’s uncurable.” Ben couldn’t help but laugh, a huge grin on his lips, “Or maybe I was diagnosed with dumb?–I get them confused,” he added quickly, crossing his green eyes for a moment to make sure it was clear he was joking. There really wasn’t much to talk about–even his medical records were clear. He’d suffered a few fractures as a kid, a sign of maybe a few too many irresponsible choices in his youth, but well and long healed by now. Scans would reveal as much, along with the usual symbiont-less Trill readings.

Tilting his head, he focused on one of her ears, catching sight of something. Was it some kind of device? For an instant he debated whether he should even bring it up but, as they said, fortune favored the bold, and Ben had plenty of bold in him. “What’s that? It looks pretty cool.”

Carmen shook her head and rolled her eyes, however her feigned frustration was undermined by the small smile she was fighting back. When Ben mentioned her aids, she brought her hand up to one ear and popped it out. “Hearing aid.” she said, showing it to him. It was larger than most people would expect, going very far down her ear. “I was born deaf.” she said, taking it back and easily sliding it back in place. Her deafness was one of those weird genetic defects that always seem to show up in hybrids, and couldn’t be fixed by normal implants, leading to these bulky contraptions she wore. They usually didn’t cause any problems, however, so it wasn’t a big deal.
Carmen turned her attention back to the PADD, and moving on to the next question. “Have you had any problems sleeping, either falling asleep, staying asleep, waking up, or staying awake?”

When she popped it out, it took everything Ben had in him to resist the impulse to reach out and give it a closer examination. Luckily, she reattached it rather quickly. “So that helps you hear? Without it you can’t hear at all?” he asked, craning his head a little bit, unable to curve his curiosity completely.

“Uh, I don’t think so? Unless you count staying awake during Professor Yovok’s seminars on Quantum Geophysics, that’s pretty hard to do,” he asked with a grin. The vulcan professor was notorious at the Academy for his strict adherence to discipline and his unforgiving monotone voice. “Can you modify it? I bet it lets you hear even better than regular ears, or at least pick up sub and ultra sonic ranges.”
