As many people in STF know, Mike Rouse-Deane and Emily Stephenson have been involved in a bit of a feud over the past several months. I’ve been brought in by both parties demanding punishment of the other on more than one occasion. Up to now, I’ve maintained that it is not the job of president to make sure that people like each other and get along, just to ensure that STF runs smoothly (or, as closely as we are able to approximate smooth running, anyway). I still believe that to be the right way for the president to deal with issues that are strictly between members.
On 25 July 2001, I was approached by Emily (Olympic XO) who claimed to have evidence that Mike (Olympic GM) had forged her identity in two emails to Stuart Coll (Olympic CO) with the intent of having Emily ‘resign’ from her XO post. I was shown a small cut and paste of the body of an email, without any information that could be used to prove who wrote, sent, or received it.
On 26 July 2001, I informed Mike that while I had no evidence and would not take action without it, I had received a complaint that I would be investigating.
On 27 July 2001, Mike came to me and admitted that he had done what he was accused of. When he came to me, he expected and was fully prepared to be banned from STF permanently.
Given the levels of animosity that have been directed at both parties (Mike & Emily) from the other, it is somewhat understandable that he would try to distance himself from Emily. However, the course of action he took plainly went too far and can not be justified or rationalized in any way whatsoever. However, it is to Mike’s credit that he was mature enough to step forward, admit his wrong and accept whatever punishment would be forthcoming, which is more than I’ve had from some in STF during my term as president.
Given the reasoning above, I have concluded that punishment is necessary. Therefore, Mike Rouse-Deane is hereby banned from www.star-fleet.com for a period of 30 days. Because his actions were directed at removing someone from a position on the WeBB, the ban does not extend beyond the WeBB. Specifically, he is not banned from #Star-Fleet in IRC.
To avoid disruption of sims that he is involved in, Mike has until 31 July 2001 to bring his participation in sims to a graceful close. The ban begins 1 August 2001. At the conclusion of the ban, Mike is free to pursue whatever positions he desires. Should another incident of this nature occur during my term as president, I will have no choice other than to ban Mike permanently.
