With the passing of Steven Sigle, a new CO is needed for the USS Odin.
Before addressing that, though, and in the interests of transparency, I wanted to make a couple comments about whether or not the ship will be renamed. Often when a CO steps down after a decade on the ship, the club retires the ship’s name so that it remains associated with that CO. And that was my initial instinct with the Odin. However, Steven didn’t step down as the ship’s CO - he passed away unexpectedly while serving as CO of the ship. As Fleet Commander, Brian Richards has reached out to many members of the Odin’s crew, and the consensus is that the best way to pay tribute to Steven as the Odin’s CO for over a decade is to keep the Odin’s ship name as is, which I completely endorse. Therefore, the Odin’s name will remain as is to recognize Steven’s contributions to the Odin.
(As an aside, some members in Command and in DMs suggested renaming the ship after Steven. I want to say why that is a bad idea, just in case this comes up again in other similar situations. Generally, we do something unique for a member to recognize them when they pass away, and I know those members who are closest to Steven are planning something later this month. Naming a ship after Steven seems… small. And the USS Brian A. Olinski is a different situation - a new ship class was created after a concept Brian had been advocating in the club, and that new ship class was named after him - so it was natural to rename his old ship with that unofficial concept when we changed the ship’s class to the Olinski class. And as the club grows older, I really want to avoid a situation where more and more ships are named after deceased members.)
With that out the way, though, a new CO for the USS Odin is needed. Therefore, based on the recommendation of the Fleet Commander, Meridian Fleet, I hereby appoint Jerome Davis as the Commanding Officer of the USS Odin.
