Hello everyone!

I want to create a geology-themed science ship as a testing ground for other experiments. It’s also an attempt for me to get an executive officer’s position to test for taking the XO Exam.

I’d like to have a CO, an XO, a science DH who’ll serve as SO, a security DH and a medical DH who’ll be the only doctor on board and probably be a LTJG.

I suggest you not do it this way. There is no such formal thing as an X-Fleet XO, or an X-Fleet CO. There isn’t supposed to be because ships in X-Fleet are not structured the way that ships in the regular fleets are, so the normal chain of command does not apply at all in X-Fleet.

You can take the XO test without actually being an XO anywhere. It’s intended to be taken by people who aren’t XO’s yet.

You should also learn how XOs work from people who are main fleet XOs, or from people who are main fleet COs. Going from DH to XO is the single most signficant shift in the club, because it’s the first time you take on OOC work, and the first time you’re really potentially held responsible for it.

As someone who recently made that shift, I have to agree with Joe. X Fleet is not, and should never be, a “practice spot” for any position much less one that puts you in both a leadership and OOC role that’s so critical to the running of a ship. You’ve been here 6 months. Get some more main fleet experience under your belt and take on a DH position for a while before transitioning to XO. It’s a huge shift.

Very few positions before XO have as much OOC responsibilities, and let me tell you, even now a month+ in, I still sometimes feel amazed by how much work an XO does. I don’t get to sit on my behind and watch the action unfold, throw out a post periodically to stay within limits, and simply hope to have my moment. I have to check the ship everyday, not just for posts, but for numerous other things that I might need to fix. I have to in near constant contact with a minimum of the CO, and I’m actually in contact with CO, GM, FCOMM, and AFCOMM at any one time.

XO isn’t something to laugh at and it’s not a position I’d recommend just anyone jump in to. X fleet is nothing like the main fleet. You don’t have to file a report, AWOLs aren’t set out by any official means, you don’t have an AFCOMM or FCOMM to answer to, and there’s little in way of restrictions you have to adhere to.
