Kestiana sat in the command seat on the command center, the captain was busy elsewhere and had left her in charge for the moment. The young XO was not exactly used to sitting in this seat. Normally she was in her own seat because the Captain of the Station would be sitting where she presently was. However, her current situation could not be helped as it were and there was no going back after having accepted the responsibility that came with being XO, for now, she would view it a learning experience for herself. Hitting her com-badge she said =/\= Sahal to Lt Grimes, a status update on your mission with the shuttle investigation? =/\= Putting her elbow on the armrest and her head on her hand she waited for the good Lieutenant to respond.

Sherlock reached and tapped his comm badge, “We’re working on something. Trying to hear a recording found and it cleared up, hold please.” Looking back to Ferl’lak.

Baleer sat at the engineering ops station monitoring the systems.

Kestiana looked over to Mr. Baleer while she waited on Sherlock to report in, “How are you doing Mr. Baleer?” She asked the Chief Engineer officer of the station with a smile. “How are our engines looking this fine day?” She asked for a report on engineering as well.

Baleer laughed.

“Considering out engines, as you so quaintly put it, are mainly station keeping and reaction control thrusters, they’re fine. The AM reactor is operating at peak as well.”

“Good to know. Sorry, just I didn’t realize how quiet it is in a station. My last posting was a starship the stars do not move as I am used to.” Kestiana said with a sigh.

“I understand.” Baleer said, “There was a time when I would keep the form of the bodies I took. Each one being different it took time for me to get used to their particular strengths and weaknesses.”

Kestiana looked to him, “What made you stop?” She asked curiously.

“Letting the body assume the shape of my nature gave me consistency. I no longer had the acclimatization period that, depending on the life form, could take days to weeks. And it’s also lead to some interesting personal interactions. I’ve still yet to find out what ‘Yiff me were-furry!’ means.” Baleer said as he tapped a small flashing dot on his console that immediately stopped flashing.

Kestiana couldn’t stop herself from laughing at that comment about the furry. “Honestly I have no clue what it means either. “What was the flashing dot?” She asked curiously.

“I’m running an experiment on our phaser waveguides to see if I can boost tracking. If it works, it’ll boost tracking speeds by seven percent. It’s not much, but it’ll make it much less likely that smaller, more agile ships will be less likely to evade our weapons fire. But there’s a trade-off. We’ll either have to deal with increased power usage by about nine percent or a phaser output reduction of twelve percent. That flashing light indicated an emitter failure in the simulation at the currently set parameters.”

“Hmmm,” Kes said as she listened, she liked the way the man thought, “Well let me know if you can reduce that percentage and give us less of a trade-off. Otherwise, sounds like your making progress that you may wish to share with our Security/Tactical officer at some point.” Kestiana smiled at Baleer.

Baleer nodded his massive head.

“I am. I’ll get it as good as I can, but it may come down to a choice of priorities between tracking, power output, or rate of fire.” he said.

A different dot began flashing and Baleer tapped it off.

“Before you ask, that was an overloaded power coupling in the simulation.”

“Yes, well I’d rather not have to make a decision between those three options during a combat situation. However, should the need to call for it. Tracking and power output are the two things we cannot afford to make a choice out of. we need to be able to track our target, and I’d like to keep shields up if at all possible to prevent our destruction.” Kestiana said with a slight smile to show she was teasing. She trusts the officers aboard this ship to do their job to the best of their abilities. otherwise, they would not be part of this crew.

“Well I can have different settings for different phaser arrays, or I can try to have the setting adjustable on the fly. Sort of a pre-programmed option.” Baleer suggested, “It doesn’t have to be an all or nothing situation.”

Kestiana smiled, “I’m a hands-on kind of girl, and I trust my crew’s judgment, that is why the Captain and I chose you after all, so I trust you’ll know what to do should we find ourselves in a firefight,” the XO said softly.

“Well if it’s up to me, I’ll just adjust preprogrammed settings on the fly after I know what parameters the systems can endure.” Baleer said with a low chuckle that vibrated in the chests of the bridge crew and across all the solid surfaces.
