The first ankle he looked at was the base above her cynbernetic foot. The ankle itself was swollen, from the inflammation. “What type of surgery, Doctor?” Omni asked, hardly as informed about medicine as she was about Engineering and Science. Medicine was sort of the back burner for her, she left those sciences to the Doctors and those who preferred the topic. The opposing ankle was malformed, which had been previously shown on scans, as the ankle had likely been sprained in the past and didn’t heal properly, thus causing it to bend in, just above the foot. “Yes. You would likely be better at telling why, however.”
Lt. Cmdr. Omni
XOHis medical mindset seemed to just take over before anything as he took off her shoes after he could see some of the initial issues. As he was moving one foot around at a time, up, down, to the left, and right to judge her range of motion he asked if any of it hurt at one point or another. He answered her question in between his checks. “Minor surgery would include checking and smoothing of bone and cartilage in areas inside ankle.” He tilted his head a bit as he flexed her second ankle feeling the odd movement of it. “Thought nano machines should take care of inflammation .. they seem not to be working or inflammation is continuous. Could try steroid injection for ankle with cybernetic foot. Won’t last long, but might be long enough for nano-machines to fix problem. Do you remember what happened to this ankle?” He opened a drawer next to her at the table and pulled out a medical tricorder and started scanning the ankle again to get updated readings on it.
Lieutenant Yuri Balashov (CMO)
“Hmm.. what do you believe would be the wisest course of action, noting upon our current situation with the Serenity. And, if surgery, what is the recovery time frame for it?” Omni inquired, her voice having gradually softened to be relieved of the harsh, stoic tone. It was now debatably friendly, a bit smoother and less ‘I-am-gonna-jump-down-your-throat’ like. Resting her back, as to alleviate some of the discomfort from her erect position, she glanced down at the Doctor. She contemplated how to respond to his query, before giving him the honest answer. “Just after I was broken from the Hive Mind, doctors began to reform my body, due to severe injuries sustained by the previous encounter with hostile civilization. Post to my surgeries and the beginning of recovery, one of the officers blamed me for the death of her family, seeing as I was an ex-Borg. Unappreciative of my stoic, perhaps cold demeanor, she threw her fist at me. In my hazy state, I was in no room to fight. Needless to say, she snapped my ankle and bruised several of my ribs. So, that ankle wasn’t sprain, it was snapped. Well, the bone supporting it, was.”
Lt. Cmdr. Omni
XOYuri sighed. “Some people don’t understand that there is no control over what you do in collective.” He seemed visible perturbed that someone would do such a thing to basically a defenseless creature. “If anatomy is similar to humans .. the talus could be repaired over time supported with metal plate. Recovery with nano machines ..” He thought for a moment and then looked up and the thought had just occurred to him. “Have you been walking on this entire time since then ..?”
“There are several differences in your physiology as opposed to mine. Which include: our eyes, our brain, our liver, the lack of an appendix, an additional organ by our nose, the placement of our heart, reproductive organs and several different bones. For this matter, yes, it is nearly exactly the same.” Omni knew she had to be aware of her own physiology to help doctors of this age, but that was all she knew of medicine.
The nanos had been unable to repair the injury due to the constant force put onto it. She had not been with proper regeneration in several years, leaving her body vulnerable and on the lower spectrum for healing via her nanoprobes, beyond that of warding off physical sickness or any other immune issues. They could fix simple ailments, such as the bruised ribs or sprained joints, even concussions and things of such a nature, but breaks and fractures had been a different story. “Yes, I have.”
“You need to be more careful Commander. Should have seen me about this earlier. Looks as if bone structure for foot is similar from scan so that is good thing.”
“You’re right, Doctor.” Omni nodded, well aware that it was stupid to have been walking on it for so long, but it hadn’t seemed that large of an issue, so the stubborn Commander imbecilely continued.
He set her foot back down and set the tricorder to the side and shuffled through one of the drawers on the left, pulling out an older syringe. Hyposprays usually worked for most things, but for an injection of this nature, it needed to be in precise locations. “Wait here for quick moment.” He disappeared out of the room and turns the corner to the right where he went to another room that had several vials of various liquids secured in a climate controlled area. “Computer, open container Echo two, authorization CMO.”
“Very well.” Omni watched curiously after where the doctor had gone, but soon relaxed back into the chair.
=^= Acknowledged. =^=
He retrieved a large vial of an opaque white liquid and returned to the room with the Lieutenant Commander.
Lieutenant Yuri Balashov (CMO)
“What is the medicine you are holding?” Omni may not be a Doctor, but there was no denying her inquisitive and almost cat-like nature. She seemed curious about everything, despite maintaining a calm and collected stance, as most of her kind often did.
Lt. Cmdr. Omni
XO“Ah, this?” He held up the large vial as he pressed the syringe into it and drawing out an amount of the liquid into it. “It is mixture of corticosteroid and local anesthetic.” He set the vial down on the table as he opened a few drawers and pulled out two more bottles one containing iodine and the other hydrogen peroxide. He held out his hand for the former Borg Commander for some additional support. “I need you to sit on examination bench please. Both legs in front, not hanging off side”
“Ah, I see.” She responded, trusting that his mixture had some kind of property that would assist within the arthritis. Looking up, Omni took his hand, using him as support to rise to her feet as she pulled herself onto the biobed. Tugging her legs onto the bed, she pressed both of her feet against the cushion of it, so that it was easier for Yuri to do what he needed to. Placing her hands behind her shoulders and back for support, she watched the Lieutenant.
He set the syringe off to the side as he shuffled around in yet another drawer and found some forceps. He made his way to the table again as if he forgot something and opened a cabinet to pull out a large jar filled with cotton balls. He set the jar next to the syringe and opened the top and collected one of the cotton balls with the forcep as it made a few clicking sounds as it locked itself to the cotton ball. He opened one of the bottles that had the larger top to it and set the cotton ball on top of it and give it a small tip. The cotton ball quickly dyed itself a rusty orange color as he tilted the bottle upright again and closed it up. He balanced the forceps with his index and middle fingers as he felt along her ankle with mostly his thumbs. After picking two spots on opposite sides of her ankle he swathed a small patch of the orange liquid on to her skin for both ankles.
Large, azure eyes studied the man with a sense of fascination. She watched his erratic movements, studying the chaos that he had found himself within. Yet, what appeared chaotic to her, apparently had rhythm to him. It was undeniable, the way she seemed to watch everything around her. It was as if the world was a stage and she was constantly within the house, watching with an audience as vast as the universe but as small as this station. She seemed to study each little detail, as if having some need to figure out every little thing about the universe around her. It seemed that each moment was a puzzle, a puzzle she was going to find that missing piece for.
He thought for a moment contemplating on a test of sorts. “Can I have your thoughts Commander? I think steroid injection will easily fix ankle with prosthetic with nano machine assistance, but for other ankle .. I am wondering if perhaps a combination of steroid injection plus time in regeneration can correct other ankle. Would eliminate risk of surgery if it works.” He scratched his chin through is beard. “Though if you would prefer the surgery, we can correct break that way. Recovery time would be reduced due to nano machines in blood, I would assume … one week for recovery?”
Lieutenant Yuri Balashov (CMO)
“The nanos should easily assist with the repair of the ankle with my cybernetic foot. So, that should be a viable cure which would only take a few hours to process through and finish.” Omni nodded, considering his other question. She debated what would have been better. Having only just had the regeneration chamber installed (which meant she hadn’t used it, yet) she wondered if that would be the better way to assist in the healing, as it was intended to work with the nanos within her body to help them mend any ailments, or if the surgery would be better for her. Shaking her head, she went with the first. “Seeing as my body is tuned for regeneration, the former would probably be your best bet, as humans say.”
Lt. Cmdr. Omni
XO“This is true .. I was concerned about effects though. Most, good due to accelerated regeneration.. though I have heard sometimes reformed Borg dream at times in such a state.” Most of these theories were unfounded and there was nowhere near enough testing to confirm, but from the few articles that he managed to read overtime there were some thoughts that it was possible. “Not all dreams are good however..” He seemed to fidget uncomfortably as he readied everything else for his next step. “We have no counselor, though if you do experience anything unpleasant in regeneration, I would be happy to lend ear.” He took a breath before dragging the old swivel chair over and raising it a bit to match the height of her ankles. “On plus side, at least we will confirm whether or not regeneration can correct issue!” He grabbed the other bottle and uncapped it, which seemed to have somewhat of a squeeze tip as to project the liquid from the bottle. “Ready for next part? I will do in two parts, though I must work quickly. Nano machines will want to disrupt local anesthetic since being numb is unnatural and inhibiting state.”
Lieutenant Yuri Balashov (CMO)
“That is the reason I have avoided using regeneration for several years, now. Of course, medically speaking, it is risky and unsafe, which I am certainly you could agree to the doctors who were displeased by my choice to discontinue them for the dreams. However, these dreams are recollections of the past, a past that becomes a horrendous nightmare enough to elicit any form of PTSD that any creature might have, after their time with the Borg; it is almost unimaginable to anyone outside of the collective.” She shook her head, a look of admiration beneath the calm of her stoic eyes. If one were able to look beyond the mundane gaze, they might be able to find it, hidden behind her walls. This man had achieved her reverence, her respect. It wasn’t likely to be revoked, unless he did something unusually bad. “Is there anything you won’t do to help someone, Doctor?” She asked, in a way that was more acknowledging than joking. “Yes, I am prepared.” She nodded, “Work as quickly as you must.”
Lt. Cmdr. Omni
XOHe hesitated for a moment at her question. In that moment it was almost a whirl of memories that through him. Some good, most negative in nature. Though all of which important to him. With a solemn smile and downward cast eyes he picked up the syringe and answered a simple, “No.” He wasn’t nearly as good as the Commander in hiding his expressions, but if one were looking carefully they could most likely sense a darker past that he wasn’t ready to talk about yet. “You may feel pinch at first Commander, first part should be easy.” He grabbed the other bottle first and squirted the second liquid at the orange stained spots on her skin, as the liquid hit the skin it was rather cold, but the rusty dye seemed to disappear immediately. (Yay for iodine/hydrogen peroxide reactions! Coincidentally, something I already knew XD) Doing one ankle at a time, he slowly slid the needle into her skin at the points that were previously marked little bits at a time, slowly depressing the syringe allowing the liquid to permeate the area. It most likely would sting a bit, though nothing that couldn’t be bared. He would slowly work his way deeper in different spots pulling the needle partly back out, then into a different direction slowly leaving bits of the liquid in certain spot.
OOC: Haha!! Yay for 10th grade chemistry.
IC: Omni could see the solemn nature of his smile, wondering if that was meant to hide the expression that had lifted into his eyes. Of course, anyone would know better than to question where they were not welcome, but it did seem as if these thoughts had some significance to the doctor, whether they were pleasant or hellish, they seemed important. Choosing the higher road, Omni kept her thoughts to herself, assuming the doctor didn’t need someone questioning him about a topic he probably didn’t want to discuss, specifically assumed because he hadn’t brought up. If he wanted to, he would have said something.. right? Dismissing the thoughts, she could feel the sting of the needle as it was inserted into the thin, sensitive skin around her ankle. It wasn’t pleasant but it wasn’t unbearably bad.“First part done, now we wait for moment while ankles become numb. It is odd sensation if you have not experienced it before.” He rolled back in the chair towards the table, away from the biobed. The wheels squeaked in protest from the rust that partially seized some of the wheels. He slid open another drawer which he silently cursed himself for forgetting, and pulled out another syringe, this in comparison could hold a lot more liquid and held a thicker needle as well. He peeled away the packaging and rolled back over to the biobed and began filling it with the rest of the liquid from the large vial. He pulled it out of the rubber stopper and depressed it until a small squirt of the liquid spilled out and splattered itself on the floor. He set this to the side as he rubbed her ankles a bit, allowing the injection sites to take hold a little bit faster. Soon she could most likely feel nothing but the pressure of his fingers as he pressed in, but nothing more. The pain would still be a dull throb, but nowhere near as much as before. “For better answer..” He gaze was focused on her ankles as he spoke, making sure not to miss anything. “I would help any person regardless of species or affiliation. Be enemy or friend, whether I could communicate effectively or not. I would always help.”
As the doctor had noted, it was incredibly odd. She had never been without the ability to feel an area of her body, without physical reasoning behind it, such as the amputation of a limb or the still nature of being regerated, which was a subconscious feeling more than anything else. As his medicine began to work, her able became less and less response to the feeling of the world around her. She could no longer feel the faint draft of the air, nor the pain that previously resided there, from the invasion of the thin needle that had elicited this reaction. Nodding, as if to say it had done its job, she looked upon the larger needle. There was once a time where such a needle terrified her, but now, it was hardly even worth a bat of her eye. Especially after all of the alterations the Borg did to drones. “That is very noble of you, doctor. Of course, likely an aspect of most medical officers, albeit still quite respectable.”
After about 1-2 minutes he inquired, picking up the previously spent syringe. “How does everything feel right now?”
“Numb,” Omni deadpanned, as there was nothing else she could have really said, in response to his question.
He poked a few areas with the needle to ensure everywhere was covered that was needed by the anesthetic/steroid mixture. “Anything here? Here? Here? What about here?”
Lieutenant Yuri Balashov (CMO)
“Only the pressure of your fingers, Doctor.” Omni informed, finding the sensation to be odd and quite unwelcome. At least, however, it would be over once the anesthetic wore off to return to its previous state.
Lt. Cmdr. Omni
XO
It was almost as if Yuri bounced back to his normal demeanor as he grinned somewhat as he poked her ankle one more time. “Very odd feeling, yes?” He set the smaller, empty needle down again as he picked up the one with the thicker one. “This one .. unfortunately will be a little more uncomfortable. You should not feel much of it, but pressure and hopefully bit of relief.” He felt again where the bones were positioned again in her ankle before placing the needle at an angle and slowly pushed it inward into the ankle slowly sinking deeper as it slid between two of the bones. As he depressed slowly on the plunger in the syringe the pressure could be felt building up and expanding outward providing a small buffer of liquid in the joint. The numbness would intensify in the area before the steroid would take effect within the day. As he pulled the needle out a little bit of the liquid would come out of the hole that they needle created in her skin and trickle down her ankle. He would repeat this on the other ankle with the rest of the fluid and set the syringe back down off to the side.
“Now we wait until numbness wears off before heading to regeneration in quarters.” He grabbed a small square of gauze that was off to the size and wiped up the excess that had tickled down her ankles. “How does everything feel now?”
While they waited for a bit he asked another question, curious about what everything was like. “Do you remember what days were like prior to the Borg coming to planet? What was life like?” He tried to focus on the positive things, in mild hope that it might benefit the possible dreaming state that she might find herself in later.
