The Klingon Security Chief barked. “Just as the captain ordered. Two officers per team, minimum of one team per deck. Add an additional team to high profile areas such as Main Engineering. Report to me when all teams are established. This petaQ will not escape us!”

“Yes, sir!” NE Winters responded before rushing back to the Security Office. He issued a series of orders, pairing the officers into teams to secure the decks. Since Main Engineering was a priority target, he set two teams to guard there. He decided to send NE Reynolds to rendezvous with NE Jefferson in the Cargo Bay. He looked over the remaining officers, and one in particular caught his eye. “Ensign Watson, you’re with me. We are going to secure the Crew Mess. It is the only place on board that every single crewman has the potential to visit. Maybe we can listen in, and find out something useful.”

The pair headed to the turbolift. “Deck 21,” Winters said immediately as they entered.

-NE Winters

When they entered the Crew Mess, Winters would discover it was packed with Junior Officers (not all that surprising considering the hour). Scattered about a sea of nameless faces was an assortment of engineers and operations officers, who would have greater knowledge on anything pertaining to the cargo bay. Amongst those officers, members of Lockehart’s diplomatic attaché and a few spread out marines could be found enjoying their meal with Dauntless junior staff.

Storyteller

NE Winters turned to NE Watson after a few minutes of surveying the sea of people. “Watson, I believe we should make our way towards some of the more knowledgeable of those here. I will get some food and sit at a table near some of the members of the diplomatic attache, to see what I can learn. You should make your way towards those engineering/operations officers and see what you can find out.” They split up to cover more ground.

-NE Winters and Watson

“Hey Mr. Watson, come here. Nice to meet you, I’m Lt. Cmdr. Saunders, the tactical chief.” Saunders said as he offered his hand to Watson to shake. “I’m just perplexed about what’s happening, so I needed a break. So, what brings you here on the dauntless?”

NE Watson was a little taken aback, but he tried not to let his nervousness show. He took Saunders’ hand and shook it in return. He didn’t know how he should answer as his orders were to listen in on conversations that were happening, but he decided that he could do both. “I am just a security officer, sir, and I go where I’m sent. I was assigned to Lt. K’Vexx. Honestly, though, I had started down the path to medical before the excitement of starship security enticed me.” He said that last bit in what seemed like a conspiratorial wink. He continued to keep his ears open for anything out of the ordinary.

-NE Watson

“Well, Mr. Watson, take it easy, there’s nothing to be nervous about. I see you’re a good officer. I won’t keep you. I just wanted to say hi to you. You’re dismissed.”
Lt. Cmdr. Saunders
Chief of Tactical

NE Watson said, “Thank you, sir, good day sir,” and continued to make his way towards the engineering crew.

NE Watson

“Did you see that guy? He was walking around like he owned the place,” a Caitian ensign rolled his eyes, fur bristling at his neck. “I’d like to give him a piece of my mind.”

“Do that and you’ll have Argeneau on your tail. She pays awful close attention to that guy.” Another pipped up, stuffing his face with a BLT. “She seems to like him.”

“Of course she doesn’t like him.” The third, a young woman in her twenties, huffed. “She suspicious of him. So she watches him like a hawk. Can’t you guys see something’s clearly off about him?”

The Three Engineers

NE Watson approached the engineers. “Couldn’t help but overhear you guys. Is there something about our new Tac Chief that I should know?” He split his gaze between the three, allowing his gaze to seem meaningful but approachable.

-NE Watson

“The Tactical Chief?” The darker of the two men, Mahi, furrowed his eyebrows in confusion, “who said anything about him?”

“We were talking about Lt. Fitzgerald,” another explained, “he’s the new systems officer down in engineering.”

The Tactical Chief over heard what was being said, but did nothing about it. Thinking, {They couldn’t know who I really am?} Bill worried a little.

Stealing a glance at Bill, Baker turned back to Watson and the others, “I hope he doesn’t think we’re talking about him. We’ve got enough problems on our plate than to deal with a perturbed DH.”

“Oh, please. The biggest problems you have are with your ego,” Teris retorted, picking at her meal. “Anyway, what can we do for you..is it Watson?”

The Three Engineers

“That’s it, yes,” NE Watson replied, relieved that they weren’t talking about Saunders. He sat his tray down at the engineers’ table and continued, “I’ve only met Fitzgerald in passing, so I don’t know much about him. He does seem a bit off though? What have you noticed?”

-NE Watson

“He seems..sketchy.” Baker explained. “I’m not sure how to put it. Jumpy, maybe? He doesn’t like to he watched, and every time someone is around him, it’s like he’s trying to hide his work from us. We’re all engineers, we know what he’s doing.”

“Unless he has an ulterior motive,” the first engineer suggested, “then his secrecy would make sense.”
