As shuttle rides go, this one was adequate. The Klingon warrior K’Vexx had proven himself to be a valuable member of Starfleet time and time again as he did his best to uphold the tenets of the Federation. He had recently gotten promoted to the rank of lieutenant and was waiting for a posting when he decided to visit his homeworld of Qo’noS. It was not incredibly welcoming. It never was, not this or the first six times he visited. His family looked down on him for his decision to join Starfleet, but he knew it would be in his best interests. A way to protect the peace. As he approached the Dauntless, he looked out the viewport at the Mjolnir-class vessel and it was a stunning site.Duffel bag in hand, he exited the shuttlebay and made his way directly to the Bridge. No sense in wasting any time. There was work to do.
=^=Lt. Tadashi to Bridge, Shuttlecraft Odysseus has departed the Dauntless; bay doors have been sealed. We are prepared to return to warp.=^=
=^=Understood, Lieutenant.=^= Ael slid her finger from the comm, turning to the helm. “Ensign Pederson, proceed course at warp factor seven.” She waved her hand, “Engage.”
He entered the Bridge and announced, “Lieutenant K’Vexx, Chief of Security, reporting for duty as ordered.”
-Lt. K’Vexx, CoS
“Lieutenant,” Aihia rose to her feet, closing the distance between K’Vexx and herself. Towering over most of the officers on the bridge, Ael was a large woman, but her nature was of no consequence to her size. “Welcome to the USS Dauntless, I am Captain Aihia.” She bowed slightly, gesturing to her readyroom. “Please, join me.”
Ael Aihia, CO
K’Vexx let a slight look of surprise flit across his face as the woman approached him. The captain was a good four inches taller than him. But then again, he was a little short for a Klingon. He quickly composed himself, then nodded. He followed her into the ready room.
-Lt. K’Vexx, CoS
“Please, make yourself comfortable.” Aihia gestured to a seat situated across from her desk. “I trust your travels here were uneventful, Lieutenant?” She crossed the room, standing beside the corner of the tabletop. Her readyroom was smaller than most, it wasn’t intended for the meetings she often held there. Although, she made well with what she had.
Aihia, CO
K’Vexx sat down across from Aihia, sat his duffle bag on the floor beside him, then responded. “Yes, they were… boring.” He looked around the ready room, and a sudden bout of claustrophobia struck him. It passed almost as quickly as it came, but a single bead of sweat pierced his brow. If he was uncomfortable, the perspiration was the only visible clue. He decided to ignore it as he regarded the captain.
-Lt. K’Vexx, CoS
“There is no worse kind.” It was hard to tell if Aihia was being sarcastic, or if she meant what she had said. “Tell me your qualifications,” she requested, “I understand you have a file with a list of your recommendations, commendations, reprimands and promotions. However, I’d prefer to hear it from you rather than a computer who thinks it knows you.”
Aihia, CO
“Yes, of course, Captain,” the Klingon said while he pondered the question. “I made the decision to join Starfleet instead of the KDF for personal reasons, mainly because I feel I can do more good here than in the Empire. I excelled in the Academy, although I did get into a few minor fights. Served aboard Deep Space Nine as a junior officer under Admiral D’Vak’s Omega Force to combat the continuing Borg threat.” He let that sink in for a moment before continuing, “After several successful battles with the Borg and the Undine, I was transferred here with the promotion of lieutenant. They never gave me an official reason, other than the Dauntless needing an experienced security chief. I didn’t question it, but I heard some of the other officers talking about the admiral not wanting a Klingon in Starfleet attire on his task force. That was rumor as far as I know, as I never actually met D’Vak personally.”
-Lt. K’Vexx, CoS
“Rumors should seldom be taken seriously, Lieutenant. I’m sure you’re aware of that,” Aihia had been the focal point of several rumors throughout her ascension to her present rank. She understood the irksome nature of those who believed in the stigma surroundings ‘hostile’ species such as the Klingon and Romulan people and similarly, their people’s disdain in seeing a person dressed in the attire of an organization often described as ‘the enemy.’ “You were assigned to this ship, not because we needed a Security Chief, but instead we needed you. Of those available for the position, many higher ranking and debtably more experienced in the field, your qualifications stood out. Dauntless does not need another brute who abides strictly by the rules and believes, because of his position, he is entitled. She required someone different, someone who can think for himself and act based on a balance of experience, judgement and protocol. You appeared the most capable of this.”
“Speaking of qualifications, what do you believe is your most powerful asset?” It was not a trick question, Aihia was genuinely curious as to K’Vexx’s personal perception.
Aihia, CO
The Klingon took a moment to consider his response before answering. “I have been trained in 17 forms of physical combat, proficiencies in more than 70 different types of weapons, survivability in several hostile environments, including zero-g training, and have physically overpowered a Borg combatant one time. I have remained level headed in 99% of the combat situations I have been in, although I did lose control when I took on that Borg combatant.” Everything he said sounded like there should have been some boasting to it, but to K’Vexx’s credit, he said everything like he was quoting it facts from a history book.
-Lt. K’Vexx, CoS
“Impressive,” She commented. Although it sounded dismissive of his achievements, a trait she had inherited from her people’s natural demeanor, Ael truly held great consideration for his abilities. Abilities she trusted would prove useful in his time aboard the Dauntless. “What do you know of the Dauntless, Lieutenant?” Aihia questioned, keeping the pace brisk as she doubted he fancied wasting time as much as she did.
Aihia, CO
“Mjolnir-class starship. Carrier vessel, heavy weapons platform. Offensive and defensive capabilities of a type seen rarely in Starfleet. Has the ability to deploy and sustain two full fighter wings with a full compliment of personnel shuttles and 3 runabouts. I have studied its capabilities extensively and I look forward to seeing it in action.”
At this last bit, he actually smiled. It was one of those smiles that was incredibly unnerving to look at, if you could be affected by that sort of thing.
-Lt. K’Vexx, CoS
“Trust me, when you see her in action, all other ships will appear nothing more than flies.” Ael held great pride in the Dauntless; she had served its decks since she was its Chief of Security, roughly six years prior. In many ways, she valued the ship more than her own life, and her crew even greater.
“I should doubt you have had the time to meet your officers, yet. If such is true, I suggest you also make an effort to meet with Major Crystal, our Marine Commander. In the next few days, we will be receiving a new JAG head; she would also be a wise ally to have. After all, the JAG, Marine and Security departments will be spending a lot of time together in the future.”
“Do you have any questions regarding the Dauntless, your department and duties, or anything else?”
Cptn. Aihia, CO
“Actually,” the Klingon started, “I am curious as to why there are CoS, CTO, JAG, and Marine Commander positions aboard the ship. I realize that we are a battleship, but won’t the department heads get in each other’s way?”
“If a department head is getting in another senior officer’s way, then they don’t belong on Dauntless. Our officers are chosen based on their ability to handle high-pressure situations, and that includes working well with others in those situations.” Aihia responded, “We have four different department heads for four different departments. The Marines handle our air groups and ground troops; security is responsible for the protection of this crew; tactical deals with weaponry and tactical warfare; JAG is responsible for the legal aspects of our missions.”
“On a ship like this, we cannot settle for someone who knows a little in every area. We need experts or we will fail.”
OOC: Sorry all! Sometimes my job takes up a good portion of my week, and I don’t always get to my computer before posting late, or close to late. I feel like I’m failing you guys! :-o
-Lt. K’Vexx, CoS/Curtiss
OOC: You’re not failing us, Curtiss! Work and your life is more important than this and none of us hold that against you. You’re doing amazing with the Dauntless and it is my pleasure to have you aboard!
Captn. Aihia, CO/Trin
OOC: That makes me feel so much better, thanks!
IC: K’Vexx took in the captain’s words and hung intently on each one. It confirmed everything he thought he knew, and clarified everything he didn’t. He took a moment to collect his thoughts before he responded.
“Then I will make sure that I do nothing to disappoint you, Captain.” And he felt it… the pride in the ship, in this captain. Captain Aihia reminded him of the stories of the great warrior Kahless, and he felt that he would go to the ends of the galaxy for her and this ship. He smiled and bared his teeth. “Qapla’ sep Qapla’,” he stated simply. Success breeds success
-Lt. K’Vexx, CoS
“Chaq ghob Qapla’ wej nob,” Aihia rose to her feet. May our success be fought for, not given. She trusted the Lieutenant would persevere in his place aboard the Dauntless. In what little time they had conversed, he had proven himself a man of strength and intellect. But was he a man of character? “I’ve little doubt of that, Lieutenant.”
At her fluent pronunciation of the Klingon language, the security chief smiled. It was not often that one came into contact with someone who really understood the intricacies of the syntax.
A feral smile tugged at the corners of her lips, her hand extended across the table. “Welcome to the Dauntless, K’Vexx.” She remarked, “May you serve her well.”
K’Vexx took her hand and shook it. “Thank you, Captain. I will do my duty. Duj yInwIj. This ship is my life.“
Dismissed was not a term Aihia often used, instead she insinuated the command through body language. She believed there was no purpose in hollow orders if a crew understood one another. This was only the beginning.
Captn. Aihia, CO
K’Vexx picked up on the dismissal immediately, being a man of order. He straightened his jacket in a motion that some called the Riker maneuver, nodded to the captain while addressing her. “Sir,” he said, as he about-faced and walked out the door, ready to begin his career on the Dauntless.
-Lt. K’Vexx, CoS
“Lieutenant,” Aihia reciprocated. Setting her stylus down, Ael watched as the young man retreated from her office, a faint glint in her eye.
Aihia, CO.
OOC: That was a great Sim! Welcome to the Dauntless!! – Trinity
OOC: Thanks! I just hope I can get into a better posting rhythm soon! -Curtiss
