It had been a hectic two weeks. The Curie’s new engines performed well in their tests a few days earlier, but Chief Engineer Garay still wanted more time to run simulations and tests.

As Ander had pointed out to the Captain, a stationary run of the engines was excellent for collecting static data. But once they were underway things would become much more complicated. He had several concerns with the geometry of the warpfield, as the Curie’s hull was designed to an older standard. The ship’s new engines were designed for use with a more angular hullform that optimised engine efficiency and reduced subspace shearing. Ander had still insisted on the installation of an off-axis field controller in each nacelle, hoping it would allow them to better manipulate the warpfield and allow them to adjust for the Curie’s flight tolerances.

All Department Heads had surveyed their departments and had given a green light to launch. Before they would leave the safe confines of the dry dock, Jessip wanted to get a final go/no-go from this Bridge crew before they would depart. After that he planned to address the crew and explain their mission.

“Security is a go Captain”

With most of the engineering staff needed at their posts, Ander had assigned NE Shanda to serve as a lisason with the bridge. She was manning the bridge engineering station and maintaining an open channel with engineering.
“Air equalization automatic on. Gravitation to automatic. Running lights are on.” All of the ship’s systems appeared to be functioning and all of her status indicators were showing green.
=/\= Engineering is a go, =/\= Ander’s voice said over the channel. Shanda turned to the Captain,
“Engineering is go,” she said with a nod before returning her attention to her station.

NE Shanda, Eng.

Over the last two weeks she had been getting sickbay set up how she liked it, and it being functional for her to use in an emergency situation. She had come to the bridge herself to deliver the message. She looked over at them and went for the moment to get final say from environmental inputs before saying to the others, “Medical is go. Let’s see what she can do.” She went back to the controls to check on other things, falling silent.

With the final coming from Science, Jessip stood up with a audible creek from his command chair. The chair seemed older than the rest of the ship, almost as if it was the original. What most of the crew didn’t know is that it was the original chair. Taken in a clandestine mission over a decade ago from the Zakdorn storage facility by three people, two of which are currently aboard. Jessip and the ship’s holographic AI, Cate.

Looking over at the young female officer at OPS, Jessip stated “Put me on a ship wide channel.” When he received the notice that the channel was open, he began;

=^= “All hands, this is the Captain… As you all know we have spent the last several weeks restoring this ship to working order. Several of you have asked me ‘Why?, why restore a discontinued Starfleet class of ship?’ ‘What about this ship, in particular, that would justify her restoration?’ As one of my officers asked me, why, this ‘bucket of bolts’” =^=

=^= “Communications officers, here, at Starbase 842, have started to detect a faint signal. When they were able to track the source, it seemed to be coming from the location of the collapsed wormhole in this system. Further tests suggest that the signal is an attempt at communication, but the wormhole effects scramble the signal enough to make any definitive conclusion just a hypothesis. When last traversed, the ship that went through encountered a warp capable race . Over the course of several months, that ship encountered that race many times and in the end was able to return with a warning regarding the intentions of that race. Subsequent missions by that ship revealed that this race was intent on using the wormhole as an avenue for invasion. When the threat was confirmed, it was decided to collapse the wormhole, sealing it on our side.” =^=

=^= “That was over a decade ago, and no sign has ever been seen to indicate that the race on the other side was able to make good on their threat. But with these new signals Star Fleet needs to know what’s going on on the other side of that wormhole. They need a ship to scout this territory. To find the source of the signal, to ascertain the belligerence of the race on the other side. They need the only ship to have ever traversed that wormhole safely. That ship, is this ship. The Darwin class USS Curie.” =^=

=^= “Our mission is to reopen the Quirst-Litt wormhole. Traverse it to the Beta Quadrant. Find the source and intent of the signal. Determine the intent of the Bat’Leth on the other side, and come back home. I made it a personal priority to gather the best people. You are the finest assembled crew and I look forward to working with all of you in our journey ahead. I wish us all Goodspeed and Good Luck. Captain out” =^=

Jessip took his seat and called over to the helms man, “Take us out Mr. Bannion. “

With the Captain’s order to NE Bannion, the Curie began her departure from the dock. The maneuvering thrusters fired to hold station while the moorings and umbilical’s were cleared. For the first time in over a decade, the Curie began to move under her own power.

Jessip looked over the Bridge stations and felt a swell of pride as the old girl was once again moving on her own. “Mr. Bannion, take us to the location of the wormhole.”

Looking over at OPS, he stated, “Be prepared to broadcast the signal to open the wormhole. Since we collapsed the wormhole on our side a decade ago, put the signal on a loop repeating every 45 seconds. We don’t know how long it will take for the wormhole to open.”

=^= “Engineering, this is the Captain. Once the wormhole opens and we enter it, I need you to monitor these new engines. We don’t need a slip up while we are traversing the wormhole.” = ^=

” Mr. Nesman, according to our logs, the last time this ship entered that wormhole we had to do so without shields. Increase power to the structural integrity fields as we have no idea what the wormholes effects will be upon this new Curie.”

Gripping the arms of his command chair, Jessip waited for the ship to get into range.
