It was shortly after settling in. Oneshe didn’t feel overly confident about the arrangement yet. He accepted that this crew at least appeared to mean him no harm. But didn’t quite feel like he had run of the ship either. He felt more like a passenger, not confident straying into areas that seemed to be more for crew.

He peered from the doorway into the infirmary. Seeing Eli, however, he shrunk back around the corner. Oneshe knew he had no business entering and just taking what he needed with the medic on duty.

But, he needed it. In less than a day the pain was already back.

He turned back into the doorway, and let out a small cough. Enough to gauge if Eli was in a position to react.

Eli stood reviewing the newcomer’s information, he wondered how long this one would last. This was a tight crew, family really, and it was hard for the new crew to find their bearing. “What can I do for you,” he asked as he turned around a giant warm smile on his face. “What can I do with you, my friend?” he asked.

Oneshe brought himself into full view. His left ear twitched erratically, which was unusual. It meant he was nervous.

“Mr. Eli,” he said, crossing his arms to feign more confidence, “I’m just showing myself around is all…”

He wasn’t used to lying and it was obvious. Ekarians usually aren’t. He glanced around the room at all the medical cabinets and equipment. Figuring he’d have to come back later, when Eli wasn’t around.

Eli turned around, “Well she’s not much to look at she’s mine, ” he said, “Don’t be afraid to wake me up, if you have needs” he said moving to unlock one of the cabinets, he put himself between him and the code. Eli’s trust took some time to earn. He placed some drugs in the cabinet and sealed it up. “Finding your way around alright he asked turning around and leaning on the counter.

“Yes, I suppose.” he replied, “Settled in okay. Just sort of waiting around for my orders.”

“your going to be waiting a while, orders tend to only come during job times , best find a way to keep busy.” he noted
His ear twitched again.

“I had a few things at my old place that seem to have gotten lost. Just some medication I’ve been taking. I was wondering if you had anything like it?”

“What was it called, If I don’t have it I may be able to syth it.” he noted.

“Terakine,” he said, a little too quickly.

The way he said it sent familiar shivers down his spine, he knew what addiction sounded like, and that sounded very close. He kept a cool demeanor however, ” I could synth some, what is it for?” he asked knowing it was a pain killer and a fairly stout one at that.

Elias “Eli” Trenor

“Oh well, I have this pain…” he grabbed his left shoulder and exaggerated the strain of rolling it,

“I guess I might have reinjured it during my disagreement with my previous employer.”

The headache was getting worse. He winced slightly, even after the act with his shoulder was over.

Eli looked at him empathetically, “Hop up, lets have a look at you” he tapped the bed with his hand, “need to get check out anyway might as well get it overwith” he noted.

Oneshe tentatively stepped forward. He was taught to respect those in medicine and be thankful for their assistance. However, he wasn’t so sure he wanted assistance. It often just lead to a lecture about how he was treating his body. He just wanted the Terakine.

He hopped up onto the bed with the assistance of his ‘better’ arm. Sat facing Eli with his feet not quite touching the floor.

A simple medical scan was enough to expose some underlying issues. There wasn’t just one isolated area of damage. His body was riddled with a history of orthopedic injuries. Poorly set fractures and ligament tears that never properly healed. Post-traumatic arthritis forming in his fingers.

“So, you are the ship’s medic,” he said, attempting to make small talk, “Are you a doctor?”

Uukemel, The Muscle

Eli watch the scan’s come in. “Uh not exactly, I’m as close as we got though, and need to make sure your not bringing anything on board with you. ” he said. “Bit of a brawler I see, when was your last break?” he asked

“You mean before now? Well, let me think…” Oneshe clicked his tongue as he stopped and thought,

“Must have been the last time I was on home on Tagnus V, about 6 months ago.”

Eli moved over to the counter and pulled out the sampler, “Need to draw some blood and look for parasites and such” he said waiting for him to hold out his arm. Eli suspected that he had so many injuries , and if he had been taking Terakine for it then there was a good chance that he was hooked on it. For now at least that was really none of his business.

He nodded, and held out his forearm where his fur was shorter and not as in the way. It was hemoglobin based, and from what Eli would have read very similar human blood in composition.

Oneshe winced and pulled back his ears tightly. He felt a little lightheaded from the draw. Compounded with his headache it made for an unpleasant sensation. His eyes fluttered for a few moments until the dizziness subsided.

“I’m sorry, it’s been a while since I’ve had to give a blood sample. Guess I wasn’t expecting it to feel so… well like this.”

Eli gave him a strange look opened a drawer and gave him a sugar tab. He reached into his pocket and tossed him the pills, he pust have palmed them when he was in there earlier. “No more than three a day, that’s a weeks supply, ” he said. “Welcome aboard” he said then shifted back to what he was doing when Oneshe walked in.

Oneshe slipped the pills into his vest pocket. He hopped off the bed, and turned to leave. But about halfway to the door he turned around,

“What do I owe you?” he said,

“I mean, even if it’s nothing for you, I’d still like to do something to pay you back.”

Uukemel, The Muscle

He looked at him, “We are a crew, no need for payment” he said wondering what to say. “Welcome aboard” he said with a smirk.

“Thank you,” he said, quietly.

After leaving the infirmary he continued to wander, continued to look for something to occupy his time.

Deck 4 had their recreational facilities. A workout room, a small holodeck, and a lounge. The lounge was small and originally only had two replicators. The cargo vessel was only meant for a max crew of 20 so not a lot of space was needed. They tended to save their replicator rations for when times were tough. Otherwise Vash procured fresh food and cooked. A fourth of the lounge had been converted into an actual kitchen. One of the smaller cargo bays had been modified as cold storage for the food. They were successful enough, it was always full.

Right now, Vashkilu was in the lounge putting away various staples that she used regularly to cook. The other containers had been already been taken down to the cold storage cargo bay. She’d go organize that after she got food started. One of her knives was dull. Well to her it was. No one else would notice. She set it back in a drawer to sharpen later and pulled out a different knife to start chopping.

Oneshe entered, his eyes drifting toward Vash. He quickly corrected himself, however, instead fixing his gaze on the cold storage.

He opened the storage compartment and appeared disappointed to find mostly ingredients rather than food. He huffed, pulling his ears back. He almost reluctantly pulled out what he believed was a fruit. Sniffing it first, definitely some kind of Earth fruit. Maybe a mango? Regardless he closed the door, took a seat nearby, and began gnawing the outside of the fruit.

As he watched Vash, he remembered what the Captain had said. She was one of the crew.

“Evening,” he said, stilted and polite.

Uukemel, The Muscle

Vash had been watching his progress as she worked. By the time he spoke she was standing next to him. She set a paring knife on the table. “Orion sooka fruit. The skin is poisoness. Peel it first.” She moved back into the kitchen. “Food will be ready in about half an hour. Anything in particular you like or need?”

Vashkilu, Infiltrator

“Thanks,” he said, picking up the knife. As he prepared the fruit, confident in using a knife but sloppy in execution, he continued the conversation,

“You don’t need to go out of your way for me, I’ve survived long enough making my own meals anyway.”

Uukemel, The Muscle

“Replicators don’t work. We cook fresh. Replicator rations are for when times are lean. The galley is my domain. I cook. I enjoy cooking. I cook for everyone. If you prefer to make your own, I’ll clear you a self in the cold storage, and you buy your own provisions. You can use the equipment, but if you damage it, you’ll pay to replace it.” While she spoke she pulled several things out and began cutting, dicing, peeling, washing, mixing, etc. Her skill with the kitchen knife showed someone who had a lot more experience than just making tiny pieces of vegetables.

Vashkilu, Infiltrator

Oneshe raised an eyebrow, and his ears mirrored the expression.

“I seem like the kind of person used to using replicators?” he asked with a smirk.

“If you enjoy cooking then don’t let me get in your way. I was just saying… you don’t have to. And I don’t need you to either.”

He was obviously struggling with just being thankful that there was someone on board willing to do one of his least favorite chores. He didn’t like being taken care of. It injured his pride.

Uukemel, The Muscle

Vash could sense his steuggle. She laughed, but not at him. It was musical and happy and inviting. “Who said something? Noril or Eli?”

“My job as part of the crew is to cook. Before I came on board, everyone took a turn at it. They are all horrible at it. It’s not fit for a slug worm to eat. So I took over. I cook for the crew because that is how I contribute, not because they make me or need me to. Well, maybe need. I don’t know how they survived on that other stuff they called food.”

“If you prefer to make your own, that’s fine. You are welcome to join us too.”

Vashkilu, Infiltrator

“Well,” he said, folding his arms, “I’m not that bad at it. Maybe good enough to give you a break if you’re ever not up for it.”

Again, simply saying ‘thank you’ was unnecessarily difficult. But something about her reaction warmed him up to the idea.

“What are you making now?”

Uukemel, The Muscle

“A confectioners toast caserole. It can be a bit rich, but the fruit is tart and balances it out. I don’t make it often, but I was able to pick up fresh fruit today.” The crew needed a pick-me-up, and everyone loved it.

Vashkilu, Infiltrator

Now that actually did sound delicious. The frilly kind of food he would never take the time to make for himself.

“Sure, I mean it’s not like a have other plans or anything.”

Uukemel, The Muscle

“Do any of us?” the lady asked philosophically. “Are you planning on staying long?” She rinsed the fruit and began to cut, peel, remove stems, seed, and pits.

Vashkilu, Infiltrator

“My people may be known for our loyalty as much as our strength,” he explained, gathering the peels from his own small snack into a pile,

“But I stayed with my last employer for about 5 months. I would’ve stay longer were it not for…”

He paused, pinned his ears back and growled under his breath.

“As long as I get my fair pay and fair treatment, I will stay as long as you like. Or as short as you like. I don’t mind either way.”
