(snip)
Go, it’s alright, Sisnil urged Vash. Noril knew. They always just knew each other. Noril squeezed her hand and walked with her.

~ N, Captain

Vash walked with him out of the main room, with a gentle feeling of thanks toward Sisnil, and into Noril’s suite. With the door closed she stepped close to him wondering what he would do. Would he want to talk or would he kiss her again or want something totally unexpected?

Vashkilu, Infiltrator

Three days. It had been three days since her father had allowed the man to injure her. She was irate with him, but she was angry with herself. She had the skill and knowledge to prevent it, but she hadn’t. Obeying her father’s rules. Never again. She had known she was more ornamentation for her father, but she had thought he valued her as a child. Even if not as an heir. Well, never again. She had only herself to take care of herself. That’s why she asked her father to find her another place, another position. She would never entrust herself to anyone again.

She liked Noril and Sisnil. Her attraction to them hadn’t waned in three days. If anything it had gotten stronger. However, she was not naive enough to think they would truly choose her safety over anyone else. Time would tell how truthful it was. Of course that was if they even let her go with them. After that first kiss, Noril had become quite stand-offish. They had talked for hours after going to his room, and that was all. He was, as the humans would say, a true gentleman. He became hesitant and reserved after that. Sisnil was quite friendly and outgoing, though scary when he needed to be. She could tell they were talking telepathically about her, but she didn’t have the skill set to over hear unless they wanted her to.

Well, she would do whatever job they wanted, it didn’t matter to her, as long as she was allowed to keep her pay for herself. She needed off of Orion, and soon. The mutterings among the staff were not good. There were murmurings of using her to better their positions. She adored her father, but he needed to get things in order, and since she wouldn’t be allowed to help, it was better that she go.

But she couldn’t. 3 days and the treatments to heal her throat weren’t any faster. The weather had become overcast and there was very little sunlight for her to enjoy outside. Even if it was bright, it wouldn’t be enough. Her mixed heritage meant she needed food for sustainment and not just for culinary pleasure. She had a sunrise lamp, but she had already dismantled and sealed it up two days ago. She didn’t trust use anyone else’s or tell the doctors how weak she was. Too many plots for her to trust anyone.

She was weak, dehydrated, and she was certain her blood sugar was dangerously low. She’d spent a few hours the day before on the terrace outside the suit given to Sisnil and Noril, totally unclothed (to their shock), to soak up as much light as possible. It wasn’t enough though, and the current afternoon found her in bed, lethargic, and ill.

Vashkilu, Infiltrator

Noril was the one that came for her. Entering her room, he stood over her bed and poked her in the shoulder. You’re not well, he said, telepathically, with a look of concern. It wasn’t a question, it was a statement.

~ N, Captain

What did he want. That was rude, poking her like that. She wasn’t a piece of meat that he needed to check if it was done. She wanted to sleep until she was better, but she forced her eyes open anyway. Did he and Sisnil need something? She pulled herself upright, by pure stubborn grit alone.

She kept a hand on the post of the bed as her limbs shook. She opened her mouth to speak, but only pain issued forth rather than her voice. Right, no talking. She lifted a soft delicate hand to his upper arm. She was poised, elegant, sensual. The only indication that she was ill was in her eyes. And the shocking weakness that came through the empathic connection. I am alright. You never showed weakness in an Orion household. How may I serve you?

Vashkilu, Infiltrator

Noril lay a gentle hand on her shoulder, trying to ease her back down. You are not. There’s no sense in trying to lie to me. He said, giving her a look. I don’t need anything. I was worried.

~ N, Captain

The slight pressure almost made her wince, but she did sit, swaying as she did. It shouldn’t hurt, but it did. It was unforgivable she couldn’t get decent medical care. It was too much for her to try and explain. You can read it from my thoughts. It was all a bit jumbled of course, she was sick so it wasn’t laid out neatly. On top of being injured and unable to talk or eat, she was becoming malnutritioned. She couldn’t sustain on photosynthesis alone, she needed actual food. Telling the doctors would mean getting IV infusions, but not ones adjusted for her, but a normal Orion. Those would hurt her just as much. She needed better healing, but knew she wouldn’t get it.

Under all of that she was worried for him and Sisnil. She’d promised not to use her talents on them, but the sicker she got, the weaker and less control she would have.

Vashkilu, Infiltrator

Noril smiled sympathetically. I could get Sisnil to talk your father into letting us go now. We don’t have a doctor on board, but we know of several we could bring you to. Doctors who would be more helpful to you.

~ N, Captain

There was none of the excitement he’d felt before from her about leaving. Just tired acceptance. She would go wherever they wished.

Vashkilu, Infiltrator

Noril smiled sadly. I’m sorry, Vash. We are trying to do what you want.

~ N, Captain

I want to get better, not be treated like an experiement.

Vashkilu, Infiltrator

There was a look of anger on Noril’s face that vanished as quickly as it appeared. “We will never treat you that way.” He said aloud.

~ N, Captain

The look was gone, but the feeling was tangible. Vash gripped his hand weakly, I know. She didn’t really hurt, she was just sick, but not the kind that rest and sleep would fix. She was ill. Sunlight?

Vashkilu, Infiltrator

May I carry you? He asked. He was not as strong as his brother, but Vash wasn’t very big. He was confident he could do it.

~ N, Captain

Yes. It was a show of weakness, but Vash knew she wouldn’t make it on her own. When he reached for her though, No. She wasn’t in control and she didn’t know what that would do to him.

Vashkilu, Infiltrator

Noril touched her gently, not picking her up yet, just testing. Let’s try and see what happens. I’ll be okay, promise.

~ N, Captain

Okay. She nodded as she reached up and hooked her fingers behind his neck.

She tried, but the moment Noril had her in his arms he could feel the effect of her mixed heritage on his senses. Sorry.

Vashkilu, Infiltrator

Noril lifted her and pulled her in against his body. Then turned and headed towards outside. He smiled down at her. This was Deltan emotion sharing. Mixed with Orion pheromones. It’s okay. Focus on holding onto me. I’ll get through it. There was mental strain in his words.

~ N, Captain

Vash laid her head against his shoulder. Deltan pheromones too, she told him. She couldn’t even muster the focus to try and stop it. The most she could do was be still so he could put her down faster.

Vashkilu, Infiltrator

He carried her somewhere she could sit in the sun and set her down gently. Your deltan abilities are sharing your emotions by touch. Your Orion pheremones are the ones I really have to resist. He said as he sat next to her.

~ N, Captain

She smiled weakly, Yes, but Deltan pheromones… elegant… sophisticated. Can be more potent. She closed her eyes, the glare of the sun, even on this clouded day, hurt her sensitive Deltan eyes. Normally it didn’t but she felt so sick. Especially when our emotions are involved.

That small conversatiin seemed to take all the energy out of her. Thank you. Vash’s fingers slid back over his shoulder as she let go and sank into the chair. The sun felt good to her skin, like a starving man finally getting a taste of food. It wouldn’t take care of her completely but hopefully she would feel some better.

Vashkilu, Infiltrator

Noril stretched out next to her. He’d never cared much for the sun, he burned too easily, but he was focusing anyways. He and Sisnil had taken medication that helped counteract Orion pheremones, but the effects were leaking and he could feel the muddle-headedness sinking in. Her Deltan pheremones had less of an effect now that he wasn’t also in contact with her, but he could still feel the way they tried to manipulate his emotions. And what she felt was… Well… He flushed thinking about it.

~ N, Captain

Vash didn’t expect to feel the cushion dip as he settled beside her. She wasn’t sure why he did except that Noril and Sisnil were not stone hearted people like most others. Though she had no doubt they were as ruthless as anyone else. She laid there for awhile, her breath labored, even shivering occasionally despite the temperature.

She found herself curled against him when she semi woke a bit later. Vash’s hand slid delicately against his arm. You should go inside to Sisnil. She could feel the effect she was having and it was going to get worse. She couldn’t leave with them like this. She would cause a riot on their ship. You need to go back to your ship. She’d have to find another way off the planet when she was better.

Vashkilu, Infiltrator

Noril was laying sweetly next to her, looking like he might have fallen asleep himself if he weren’t on high alert, watching out as if he were her guard dog. He shook his head. I’m not leaving you. He said, unsure if his decision was his own, or the product of her pheremones making him feel protective of her as if she were his mate.

~ N, Captain

Vash pushed him a little, but she was too weak to move him. Which was annoying because she was actually quite strong. No, Noril. You need to get Sisnil. Bring him here. She could tell the effect she was having on him, but she was unable to stop it. She couldn’t call Sisnil herself. It was really important he come out there and get Noril away from her.

Vashkilu, Infiltrator

She felt a twinge of his jealousy. Sisnil? Why? I am as capable as he is.

~ N, Captain

Vash knew the brothers were close, but she had no idea if Sisnil would notice something was wrong with his brother when he wasn’t nearby. She didn’t want to do this, it made her feel sick. It never had before. She’d used her skills without shame. Noril was different though. She set her hand against his cheek. Her skin was no longer soft but rough and dry. Because Noril, you have to tell him to get the ship ready. You want to take me away don’t you? You won’t leave me alone to do it yourself will you? She made herself focus on him, open her eyes and look into his. She was so sick.

Vashkilu, Infiltrator

Okay, Noril said, seeming calmed by her words. In a few moments Sisnil was out there with them. What’s wrong?

~ N, Captain

Vash couldn’t speak to him without touching him, and she was afraid to do that. She pleaded with her eyes, staring hard at him and then cutting her eyes to Noril and back. She was afraid to focus her thoughts and make Noril’s jealousy rage. Fake as it was, the consequences would be bad.

Vashkilu, Infiltrator

Sisnil could feel his brother’s emotions and it only took him a second to realize what was wrong. Noril, come on. You need a dose of protectant. Sisnil said, grabbing his brother’s arm gently.

Noril shook his head. I’m fine. Honestly, I’m fine. My head feels a little muddy, that’s all.

~ N, Captain

Vash glanced at Sisnil with a worried expression. He could see how sick and weak she was. Noril, you must take it. Please? How can you take care of me if you become ill? Her thoughts were sweet, comforting, and she didn’t have to fake the worry.

Vashkilu, Infiltrator

Noril looked at her, nodded, and stood by Sisnil. You know how it works. You need the effects to clear your system. Sisnil gave Noril a dose from a rather old looking hypospray. Now go. I’ll stay with her.

Noril gave her one last look and then left.

~ N, Captain

Vash’s eyes never left his. She fought down the thought that she wanted him to stay. He had to go, no matter what she wanted. But if Noril sensed it, he would stay.

Once Noril was out of sight, Vash looked up at Sisnil. Her whole essence radiated sorrow and regret. She hadn’t wanted that to ever happen. She’d given her word. She held his gaze and then pointed toward the door where Noril disappeared. Clearly she was warning him off, to stay away from her. But also, Noril had been jealous, and until the effect wore off he could become irrational. Sisnil needed to be with him.

Vashkilu, Infiltrator

Sisnil took her hand so she could communicate more easily. I will be fine. I’ve also redosed myself. When we aren’t under the influence of the Orion pheromones, it’s easier to resist the Deltan effects. He said. Noril will be fine, too. Don’t worry.

~ N, Captain

She nodded. Please? He was… jealous because I wanted him to get you. She closed her eyes sinking into the cushion. Check on him, and she pulled her hand away. She didn’t want to effect Sisnil too.

Vashkilu, Infiltrator

Sisnil sat down. I can’t leave you alone. You’re too sick. He said.

~ N, Captain

She shook her head, or tried to. She felt him sit and pushed a hand against his chest. Go. Be fine. She didn’t want him this close after what happened with Noril. After this Noril would probably be more distant.

Vashkilu, Infiltrator

Sisnil shook his head. I’m not leaving you, he said. Don’t waste your energy.

~ N, Captain

Sit there, she pointed to the other chair. It was an order. It was more convincing because Sisnil could tell how guilty she felt and how sick. It was hard to focus and she felt cold, but so tired.

Vashkilu, Infiltrator

Sisnil gave her a challenging look. Oh? He said. He wasn’t upset, he wasn’t angry, more intrigued.... And stubborn.

~ N, Captain

Yes. I’m keeping my word. Go sit. Her mental voice was tired and thready. She wanted to sleep, but couldn’t until he moved.

Vashkilu, Infiltrator

Sisnil shook his head. Sleep. I’m fine, I promise. He grinned at her, I’m too stubborn to move. You’re wasting energy trying to make me.

~ N, Captain

Fine. except Vash didn’t go to sleep. She got up and headed toward the other chair herself.

Vashkilu, Infiltrator

Vash! Sisnil protested, standing immediately and grabbing her gently to support her. See? Now I’m touching you again.

~ N, Captain

Vash shrugged him off angrily. You left me no choice. What did you expect? she snapped. She looked around, where was she going? The chair, yes to get away from him and his bossiness.

Vashkilu, Infiltrator

Sisnil frowned, but he didn’t get away from her. He stayed. Even as he felt the flash of anger himself. You to rest. He maintained.

Vash stumbled away from him. Her leg screamed as hot lancing pain shot up it as her calf seized up. She kept going toward the chair and lowered herself onto it.

A couple moments later, Noril came back with a bottle of water and handed it to Sisnil. There was a short, silent exchange between them, and then Noril left again with a short glance at Vash.

Vash watched Noril intently. When he walked away, Vash sighed with regret.

Sisnil gave the water to Vash. Drink. You’re dehydrated.

~ N, Captain

Her eyes were closed, but he could feel her roll her eyes. There was some reason she couldn’t, but what was it? Her mouth was so dry, and the mention of water made her thirst worse. She grabbed the bottle greedily. Why was her hand shaking so much? The water spilled as she lifted it to her mouth. She gulped the water desperately, and then screamed, chocking on the water as her throat protested the movement. The pain was excruciating enough to hit both Sisnil and Noril.

Vashkilu, Infiltrator

Sisnil winced on her behalf. Okay, that’s it, he said and lifted her into his arms. He was heading towards the doctors here. You’re getting a fluid infusion. Probably nutrition too.

~ N, Captain

Vash was in too much pain to protest. Before they were a quarter of the way to the doctors, there was a problem.

Vash’s mixed pheremones were potent enough to affect everyone they passed. A few of the males started following them. One appeared in front of them. His eyes were glazed and he was breathing heavily, and his eyes were lustful. “Hand her over.”

Vashkilu, Infiltrator

Sisnil thought a curse. He reached out to Noril telepathically. “I can’t do that. Look at her. I gave her to you now, you’d kill her.” Sisnil said, and tried to push past the man.

~ N, Captain

The man laughed, “Maybe, but it would be worth it.” The man was a foot taller than Sisnil, at least, and he wasn’t carrying a body. He reached out to take Vash from him.

Then suddenly he wasn’t there as another man shoved him. “Me first. She’d never settle for a gray like you.” The first man swung at the other and a fist fight was soon raging.

Vashkilu, Infiltrator

Noril and Sisnil were both barely over five feet tall. Even as Normal showed up to help cut through the crowd, it wasn’t easy to slip through. But their top priority was Vash, using their bodies to protect her.

~ N, Captain

They got banged into enough they would have some bruises. Some were after them, some were just reacting to the jealousy and anger and letting it free. It all woke Vash. No… no don’t… take me.

Sisnil felt a sharp pull on his arm. “Here, this way, honored sons.” The hand belonged to a girl child. It was Lira. “Come this way. Before they notice.” The girl was anxious and scared, but she was determined to help Vash.

Vashkilu, Infiltrator

“Lead the way,” Sisnil said. He deflected a blow by turning his back. “Hurry.”

~ N, Captain

Lira led the way around a corner. She slipped her hand between two stones and the wall swung in. They all slipped inside. “Help me close it!” She said desperately, trying to shove the heavy wall as she heard shouts.

Vashkilu, Infiltrator

Sisnil was carrying Vash, so Noril turned and help shove the wall shut. Both of them had taken a number of heavy blows, but if they were hurting, they weren’t showing it.

~ N, Captain

Lira smiled up at him. “Thank you.” She turned and led them down a dim and solid stone corridor. “Lady Vashkilu showed me these. Only she and her father know about them. Here, this will open to her rooms.” She ran her hand over the stone looking for the latch. They never heard a click or a scrap as the door slud open. “Lady Vashkilu maintains all the doors herself. She doesn’t want anyone to know.”

Vashkilu, Infiltrator

“What about a doctor?” Sisnil asked. “She needs a doctor.” Noril nodded as they stepped through the door. “She needs fluids. Nutrition.”

~ N, Captain

Lira looked sad and felt angry as well. “They won’t help her. I heard them. They think Lord Mezerc should have let her die first. She heals slowly, but they are going slower on purpose.”

They could hear the fighting outside the door in the corridor. “When you told Lord Mezerc about Pavmak it has created chaos. He had more followers than expected. The doctor is one.”
Vashkilu, Infiltrator

Sisnil frowned. There was a short silence, and then Sisnil reached for his comm. “Zoi to Albatross. Three to beam up?” He said it as a question, unsure the ship would be able to do it.

~ N, Captain

Lira shook her head. “You can’t beam inside. She has a court yard through there. You can leave from there, but you need her things.” Lira hurried across the room and picked up a trunk. It was small, but so was Lira. Only her Orion strength could explain it. “It has her lamp and other things. I helped her pack it.”

Vashkilu, Infiltrator

Noril picked up the trunk. It was heavier than expected. “What I wouldn’t give for Orion strength,” he muttered.

“Can you show us where?” Sisnil asked Lira. Then he knelt down in front of her. “Are you going to be safe here? We could take you too. Bring you somewhere safe.”

~ N, Captain

Lira giggled. “I’ll be fine. My contract ends in two days. My mother is coming to get me. I can stay in here. Lady Vashkilu’s rooms are the safest.” She bowed sweetly, “But I thank you all the same.”

Then she hurried toward the back of the large suite to a set of heavy wood and metal doors. “Out there, I will go check.” She slipped out and then came back a short 2 minutes later. “It is safe.” She paused to look at Vash. “You’ll take care of her?”

Vashkilu, Infiltrator

Sisnil held Vash close to his body, protectively, and nodded. On both brothers, their skin was already beginning to discolour as their bruises began to show. “We will. On our lives.”

~ N, Captain

Lira looked up at them and smiled, “Thank you.” The child genuinely adored Vash. “You should go.”

Vashkilu, Infiltrator

The brothers headed through the secret door, patting Lira’s shoulder as they passed. “Good luck.” Noril said to her. Then they were gone. When they reached the courtyard, they resent their comm message.

~ N, Captain

“You too.” The comm went through no problem and soon they were disappearing in the lights. Lira watched until they disappeared and then secured the hidden door again.

Vashkilu, Infiltrator

On the ship they took her straight to the infirmary and ordered their pilot to head to the nearest non-Syndicate doctor.
