“It’s mostly astrophysics. We have a simulation beginning on a new method of warp speed travel. One NE who transferred with me, Ensign Wylde has a universal origin theory he’s working on. We are just getting started after unpacking equipment that was piled up in the back of the laboratory.”

OOC: Thanks for the bump - I thought’d I’d already replied to this (but clearly not)

IC: “So you could do with people with an understanding of Warp theory & temporal mechanics, but not so set in their ways they can’t see beyond the current limitations? Also some archeologists & culturalhistorians?”

“All of those seem logical, Captain. I am willing, however, to bring in anyone adequately qualified.” T’Sara arched one eyebrow. “It is… curious to me, the state my predecessor left the department in. It is being operated by a skeleton crew and almost half of the necessary equipment to adequately run a laboratory was still packed up in crates.”

“Indeed,” Ben agreed, “But perhaps their priorities were a little different.”

-Ben

“Perhaps. I cannot imagine a science department on long term emergency status, but perhaps that was the case. The crew seems unfamiliar with protocol. Something I am working to rectify. Whatever the origins of these problems, they are slowly being resolved.”

“Captain. I imagine you did not make your way down here only to discuss requisitions. A tour of the department? Or other business?”

“A tour would be apreciated,” Ben replied with his typical warm smile.

“Certainly Sir.” T’Sara gestured for him to follow her. The first stop was at a computer console where a young Ensign was modifying a lengthy equation. “This is Ensign Wylde. He is attempting to justify the collapse of a four dimensional black hole as the cause of the big bang.”
“And having some difficulty.” The Brit said, without looking up.

It was comforting to hear an accent from so close to home. Ben was unable to place the accent specifically, but assumed that like his own North Yorkshire accent, Wylde’s accent had smoothed due to the amount of time spent in space.

“Some mysteries seem to elude us more than others, but I’m sure that sience will reveal the answer when the time is right,” Ben replied.

“I certainly hope so sir.” Ensign Wylde replied. “Thank you Ensign, you may return to your work.” T’Sara said. She indicated a new direction for the CO to follow. “Ensign LaFayette is working on perhaps creating a new mode of warp speed travel.”
“Yes sir. That’s right.” He pointed to his computer monitor “If you’re familiar with the experiment conducted aboard the USS Enterprise-D, it all starts there. Riding an amplified wave to your destination. It’s not ready for practical testing yet sir, but soon.” T’Sara glared at the newly graduated Ensign for making promises he perhaps couldn’t keep.

“I am vaguely familiar with the experiment,” Ben said subtly inviting the Ensign to explain his theory a little further. As a pilot, Ben had read about various FTL technologies at the Academy. He looked at the display in an attempt to understand what was displayed, but most of the technical detail baffled him.

LaFayette got excited and started to explain more. “The idea is that if a wave were generated that traveled at light speed, a ship could surf on it. Ride the wave at light speed, expend little to no fuel and the distance traveled would be determined by speed. Effectively, momentum carries the craft, and more powerful waves are generated for larger distances.”

“In the past this theory has come stuck when it comes to changing course, or reducing speed once en-route. I presume that you have an idea on how to address these issues,” Ben asked.

-Ben

“Yes sir!” the gung ho Ensign replied. “Since we have control of when, where, and with what strength the wave is released, a secondary wave can be introduced to make course corrections. The waves have a planned obsolescence. They die after whatever time their strength will carry them. Which is set to be well before the destination, so a vessel can emerge from warp and introduce a small speed reduction wave, traveling counter to the ship to go down to impulse power.”

“Well when you’re ready for holodeck testing, let me know. I’d very much like to see that.”

“Gladly Captain.” LaFayette said. “As you can see Captain, what staff we do have is… enthusiastic.”
