“So you want to give me what I need,” Ben said, “Which is fantastic. Perhaps I didn’t word the question very well. What is it that I can do for you to help you achieve your wider career goals? Aside from getting you in a post that is definately more suited to your skills than teaching.”

Kate looked momentarily befuddled by the question before a practiced look of confidence slid back over her face. “I… don’t have anything in mind,” she answered, stammering sightly. She didn’t feel that she was necessarily on a command track and she wasn’t sure she wanted command of a starship or starbase eventually anyway. Right now, intelligence was her life and that made her plenty happy. She looked slightly uncomfortable again as she studied her new CO for a reaction.

“That is not a bad thing,” Ben said with an encouraging smile, “But be sure to let me know if anything occurs to you. In the meantime, I am having a few drinks with the Romulan ambassador this evening before he continues his homeward journey. I have no doubt that the Zdonek’s CIO will be present. Would you care to join us? Perhaps get a friendly contact or two?”

Kate’s discomfort faded away rapidly as Gillespie moved the conversation toward a far more comfortable area for her. Unwilling to dwell on the notion of “needing” something for her career, she moved past that portion of his comment and addressed the rest with a slight twinge of excitement in her voice, “absolutely, sir, I would love to join you. Are there any other situations I should be aware of on the base?”

“There are none that I am aware of,” Ben replied, “I’ve not yet had a full brief from the XO. He is currently in command of the Trinidad, but I gather she is expected back overnight at some point.”

“And yes, I’m worried about what I’m not aware of. A station this size there’s bound to be something,” Ben added.

Kate smiled in what was almost a comforting manner at the CO. “I’ll keep my eyes and ears out and pass along anything you need to know,” she responded, her tone confident and competent. “I’ll be sure to check in with the XO upon his return as well. Is there anything else, Captain?” She began to rise, expecting that he wouldn’t have anything else for her and focused on getting started with her duties.
