“Always happy to chat. In my line of work, we value the ability to multitask” he said with a smile, his eyes never leaving the canvas as the brush moved.

“Always a useful skill.” Chandel said with a soft smile as she looked out the viewport. “This is my first placement on a Starbase and I am finding it quite an interesting venture. How long have you been here, Doctor?”

The tip of his brush danced delicately along the outer edges of a vibrant nebula, adding subtle flashes of color. He didn’t respond right away, nor did his painting hand slow down. Then he spoke, making it clear he had been contemplating the question for a moment. “I believe it’s been two months or so, Counselor. The days have a tendency to run into one another. Sickbay keeps me plenty busy. How about you?”
He smiled slightly. He was clearly neither annoyed by his duty obligations nor with Chandel’s presence or line of questioning.

“I am finding it fascinating actually. A totally different dynamic then a ship community. It almost feels as if one is planet side and this is a town or village rather then an installation. Well, until you look out a viewport.” She added with a laugh. “I am quite enjoying it actually.”

Counselor Chandel

“I’m a bit of a fan of ancient history. When I read about the port cities in various civilians through the ages it sort of reminds me of this starbase. This - ” he paused his painting to gesture to their surroundings with his brush. “Is the port city of our generation. It’s a hub where different cultures converse in ways that simply don’t happen in other places.” Max resumed his brushwork, gently feathering the outer edges of his nebula.

“And, of course, wherever you have a concentration of people like this. It ensures that neither of us will be out of work any time soon.”

Dr. Woolley, Medical

“That is one thing that attracted me when I heard I was to be stationed here. I have lived on ships since I was a small girl, never stayed in one place very long. You are quite right though, this is like a port city. I have seen so many different races and beings here then I have seen serving aboard ship for the last dozen years. Where were you stationed before here?” She asked curiously.

Counselor Chandel

“The USS Challenger. This is my first permanent duty station. I was aboard Challenger for my medical internship. I went to Startfleet Medical but I did all of my undergraduate work, and a good portion of graduate work, as a civilian,” Max had, as a matter of course, always added that last little bit when asked about his duty stations. Patients seldom want a new doctor working on them because their lack of experience in years can be perceived as being incapable of handling the rigors of the job. He was well aware that his having done the coursework for a PhD in Biology doesn’t necessarily allay those concerns. Though he often felt it important to, if nothing else, explain why he appeared older than someone at the same stage in career who went directly into medicine.

Chandel smiled, for a young doctor he had a lot of poise.”What made you choose medicine?” She asked as she rose and moved over to the replicator in the side wall to key in a request for coffee.”Would you like anything, Doctor?”

Counselor Chandel

“I was studying to be a biologist. The process of evolution was a big draw for me. I was just wrapping up my doctoral coursework, about to really hit the dissertation hard, when I realize I was at a crossroads. I realized I wanted to take a more active role in keeping people alive and healthy. I certainly could have contributed to the field of medicine as a biologist. But not like I can as a doctor” he said, setting his brush down and turning the easel to face the counselor to reveal the purple-ish nebula he had created.

At her question he shook his head, placing a hand up gently as to decline. “No, thank you.”

Dr. Woolley, Medical

“That is beautiful, Doctor. Very evocative. Do you plan to hang it in your quarters?” She asked as she carried her own coffee back to where she had been sitting and resumed her seat.
