Max was a bit taken aback by the seemingly lost crewman and his casual shrugging. He hadn’t really imagined a scenario where his first encounter with a new colleague would be so fruitless. A bit dazed by reality not living up to his imagination, Max managed a weak smile as he nodded.

“Thank you, I’ll just go look elsewhere…” he said as he walked in the general direction of the recuperation bay. He would check there and the surgical suites for his new superior officer. Maybe he’d find her or at least a more helpful colleague along the way. Max was certainly in no rush and was happy to have the opportunity to review his new workspace on his own. These wanderings were helping him to get his bearings and make things more familiar. He was eager to settle into that comfort that comes from knowing where he was and who was there with him.

Ens. Max Woolley, Medical

Max would not find the evasive Betazoid in the recuperation bay, instead he would be greeted by the smiling face of an older, greying officer who was happily chatting up a storm with a younger nurse. The sound of his exaggerated tales filled the sickbay with their glory, manifested from a source that probably was less magnificent than he made it out to be. Although, as long as it put a smile on his face, the nurse didn’t seem to mind.

Upon his approach to the surgical suites, a petite figure ducked from the bay, her body still clad with the thin fabric of the surgical gown. A clearly pensive expression upon her face, she nearly passed Woolley without any acknowledgement to him. Pausing, her gaze slightly clouded in confusion, Nisihe took a few steps back, studying Max from head to toe. “Ensign Woolley?” She spoke in a question, uncertain if her assumptions were true.

The Evasive CMO

Max briefly considered coming back later. That consideration was overruled by his more pressing desire to acquaint himself with sickbay and its Chief Medical Officer. He couldn’t truly be at home until he had checked in to sickbay, in his opinion. Walking to the surgical suites he noted the gown clad colleague as she stepped from the operating room. Her pause and contemplation was met with Max’s own pause. With rank insignia obscured by the surgical gown, Max was taking his own moment to contemplate the identity of, as far as he could tell, the only person actually working in sickbay at the moment.

Max’s instinct was to ask directions, yet again, to the elusive CMO. Perhaps this individual was, herself, the elusive CMO. That instinct was thrown when Max was asked to confirm his identity.

“Uhh…yes, I…” he stammered at first. “I am Ensign Woolley. I just arrived here and was hoping to meet the Chief Medical Officer to report for duty…” he continued. His tone tapered off toward the end, now suspecting that he was, in fact, speaking with his new superior though also leaving open the possibility that she was not. Max also mentally noted that the PaDD containing his orders was tucked away in his bag and he had not committed the CMO’s name to memory, something he should have done before embarking on his search.

“I was not expecting you until tomorrow, although it was mentioned you might show up sooner.” Odraavi mused, pulling back the sleeves of her thin gown. She did not expect the ensign to know her name, well versed in the exhilaration and nerves of a new assignment. “I’m Doctor Odraavi,” She extended a hand. Nisihe did not pride herself on committing to the stories of new recruits, nor anything besides name and rank. In her mind, a man could not be fully considered until properly met.. preferably in a quiet area, over a steaming cup of coffee.

“Please,” She spoke softly, gesturing across the Sickbay, where her office lay dormant. “Let’s chat in a place a bit more private.”

Nisihe slipped past Max, the fabric of her gown briefly brushing against his shoulder. “It is an unusually slow shift today,” Odraavi felt the nagging obligation to explain the leisure of the Sickbay. The lack of patients was an anomaly to its personnel, the quiet worthy of concern. In any case, it was a hubbub of life; a cocaphony of voices and the irritating sound of buzzing machinery. Today, only the gentle blip of recovering vitals could be heard over the deafening silence. “Give it an hour, you’ll have your hands full before supper.”

Stepping into the threshold of her office, Nisihe motioned towards a pair of standard chairs, lonely without the company of a living companion. “Have a seat. It isn’t a five-star accommodation or anything, but it suits the job.”
