Aaron stretched as he stood up from his seat on the transport. It had been a long journey from the USS Jahde to Magellan, but what was there to do when Starfleet called. Sometimes it was one of his biggest regrets about joining Starfleet, and not taking a civilian position, the military aspects. The brass back at Command weren’t always interested in the science that their ships were doing, or what people were on those projects. No, they just did what was “the most convenient” to them.

But here he was, reassigned to Magellan. Not only on the other side of Federation space from his last assignment. But now instead of out discovering what was on the edge of known space, he was stuck in a giant tin can, stuck in one spot. He was a scientist. He had joined Starfleet to get the chance to explore new things, make some new discoveries.

As the transport finally docked with Magellan, Aaron grabbed his bag and headed for the airlock. Most of his belongings were in the cargo hold and would be transported over when they finally got around to unloading the cargo.

Stepping onto the starbase, Aaron looked around and sighed. Yeah, it was a bit nicer then he was expecting, but it was still a station. Maybe there will be something exciting that will happen here.

LtCmdr. Foley - XO

“OH! SIR!” an Ensign rushed over to the now emerging Executive Officer. He was definitely wet behind the ears, young and absent minded. Dressed in his science blue uniform though, he seemed to be on duty and here for official business, even if he had allowed himself to daydream for a little too long while waiting on the Commander’s transport to arrive. He came to a screeching halt before the Commander and seemed to take a moment to catch his breath.

Aaron looked around as someone yelled out. Seeing a young ensign running towards him he set his bag down and waited for the Ensign to catch up.

“Commander Foley. I am Ensign Wildabound. I was instructed by our Captain, Captain Briony of Krios to meet you here and escort you wherever you want to go on the station first. She…” He paused obviously thinking hard. He even scratched his head as he thought. “OH yes! She sends her regrets as she is tied up in a rather important communication and is unable to meet you right away. You may report to her in the Ready Room once you are settled and have received your medical evaluation.”

Wildabound seemed rather pleased with himself for imitating the Captain’s formal style. He did so wish to be useful.

NE Wildabound (pronounced Wild-Abound)

Oh to be young and carefree. Hopefully the Ensign would grow out of the absentmindedness before he got in trouble for it.

“Well Ensign, it is does happen when one is in command. But for now relax,” Aaron sad chuckling. Reaching down he picked up the bag and slung it over his shoulder. “Come Ensign, lead me to my quarters. The Captain said for me to get settled in, so we might as well do as she says.”

LtCmdr Foley - XO

He nodded and then realized that he needed to lead the new XO to his quarters. Wildabound turned rather haphazardly several times and then pointed in the direction he wanted to go. He grinned and started in that direction. “Yes sir. Are you excited to begin working?”

NE Wildabound

Aaron shook his head, he was definitely going to have to find some time to explore the station himself, because as it was going, he wasn’t going to be able to remember all of the turns that the Ensign kept taking.

“Yes and no Ensign. Definitely excited for some new possibilities. But it is quite the shift to come from a deep space mission, to being on a Starbase. There is a little less variety in stellar phenomena here. Though I’m sure I’ll get used to it. Do you get much excitement?”

LtCmdr Foley - XO

The Ensign listened carefully, this was his new XO after all and anything that he said would possibly be of some later use for the Ensign’s career. At the question about excitement, he brightened up. “OH Yes. Only last month we were nearly killed by a fleet of ships from an unknown species because the Romulans and some of their Orion friends had stolen the Species eggs. The Captain figured it out though and we are safe again.” He seemed very nonchalant about the whole nearly dying thing.

NE Wildabound

Aaron raised an eyebrow, “First contact that almost resulted in the Starbase’s destruction? Were you able to learn anything about the unknown species? And what sort of eggs were they?”

It wasn’t stellar phenomena, but maybe the Starbase wouldn’t be quite as boring as he thought.

LtCmdr Foley - XO

The NE grimaced and sucked in a breath. “Well… we learned some things. We do have wreckage to go through with bodies present. The clean up is on going. However, the eggs were immediately transported back to the mother ship and they left with the guarantee from the Captain that the Romulans and Orions in charge would see justice in so far as the Federation could provide.”

He leaned in and whispered conspiratorially. “They say that the Captain was cool as a cucumber and that she faced one of the aliens in the Ops deck mano-a-mano!” He put up his fists as if to fight. “They made demands and she stayed stern to her resolution! They wanted the Romulans and Orions heads on spikes… so to speak.” Wildabound stopped, as if realizing he was talking to his new XO. He blushed profusely and waved off his conspiracy theories. “I must have been reading too many old westerns sir. Mixed with a little scuttlebutt and I might be exaggerating a bit. I have seen her on the Promenade though I could never get the guts to go up to her. She is kind of .... well, otherworldly but not. Anyway, here we are.”

The Ensign stopped in front of a set of double doors. They opened when he approached. As the XO was a single man, his quarters were one room like the Captain’s. It was still some of the roomiest on the station.

NE Wildabound

Aaron laughed, “I will definitely keep that in mind Ensign. Just remember that there is nothing wrong with a healthy imagination, just don’t let it get in the way of your work. Okay?”

The question still remained, how much of what the Ensign said was true, and how much had been exaggerated. Going head to head with an alien in Operations, probably an exaggeration, but he had heard stories of commanding officers doing similar things before. Hopefully he hadn’t ended up with a hot head as a Captain.

As the doors opened to his quarters, Aaron looked inside and let out a low whistle. This was definitely one of the perks for being on a starbase, larger quarters. He could definitely get used to this.

“Well Ensign. Thank you for showing me the way, but I’m sure you have other duties to attend to. I’m sure I can find my way to sickbay, and then up to the Captains Ready Room afterwards.”
