“Lame,” Rinker matched her, finishing his drink with the same speed as she did. His being more alcoholic hit him a little harder as he coughed slightly. “This is why I’ll never make Captain… I’d be walking around half in the bag all the time.”Rinker held out his arm slightly creating an opening for her to loop her arm/hand through. It was all so civilized like when they were on the holodeck having their little 1800s murder mystery.
She took his offered arm, remembering back to their first date. It may not have started that way, but it certainly had ended that way. The classic early 1800s murder mystery had been fun and one of Briony’s favorite holodeck programs. Who knew beneath the colder exterior of the Captain was a woman who liked to play a version of Sherlock? Heathcliff had come upon her as she was walking dressed in full victorian regalia. She wondered if that was what had first piqued his interest in her or if it had started before that day.
Rinker moved from store to store, with a little more decisiveness then simply window shopping. He paused before jewelry store, he just tilted his head for a moment towards the door and lead/pulled her within. He glanced among the items moving from necklaces to rings to ear-rings. “Anything suit your fancy?”
Rinker
She walked through the Promenade, window shopping without any real need for anything. When he stopped at the jewelry store and pulled her with him, she was bemused and more than a little curious. Her dark eyes wandered over the many items glittering throughout the displays. At his question, she tilted her head in thought. “I have never been one to wear much jewelry. None on duty. I don’t really know.”
“Well on duty isn’t too practical. You never know when you’re going to be in a situation where it might get damaged. Also it would have to be an important piece.” Rinker wasn’t much for jewelry either. His fingers changes size quickly with his weight making rings impractical, and he hated necklaces, it felt like he was intentionally choking himself.
This time she took a second look around. Her jewelry style was fairly minimal, sleek and sophisticated. Elegant. She wore gold more often than silver tones, and nothing chunky and complicated. Her favorite cufflinks were a set of gold Deltas. It was in fact, her only pair. “Are you wanting to buy me jewelry? Seems like a pretty big step.”

Rinker shrugged. “Perhaps,” He continued looking about, as much at the male pieces as well as the female. “We’ve had big steps, we’ve had little steps. Some would say after a year… jewelry isn’t that big of a deal, but if it makes you uncomfortable.” He stopped and turned to face her. “I don’t have too many items of significance and I want to do something grand.”
Rinker CNS
He had her there. Cliff was not wrong about them having taken their own steps in their own time. Some would say they moved too slow, some would say they moved to fast. For Briony, they always seemed to move at just the right pace; never so fast that she was completely uncomfortable, never so slow as to let her be bored. She thought about if this would make her uncomfortable. Cliff was almost always the one that initiated steps forward that were not physical in nature, but he always was careful to push and then allow her to contemplate the step he was pushing. This was one of those moments. Finally, she looked up into his charming face and smiled.
“Alright. Let’s do something grand.”

Rinker didn’t immediately go back to looking at pieces of jewelry. He paused, clearly weighing something in his mind deciding on speaking as opposed to keeping it to himself he spoke. “The therapist in me, says there is a reason for resistance. Its not necessarily something bad, but maybe its something we need to discuss so we understand each other better.” Rinker felt that they always moved in fits and starts. He’d move she’d match and perhaps go further, but he never asked why… well now he would.
“I want to do this because I want to demonstrate my, our, commitment to each other. I don’t think we are at the point to be engaged, but we are more than just dating… at least in my mind. So I guess, my question is why do you hesitate?”
Rinker
“You are not wrong. My hesitation is just so that I can make sure I feel ready to do this. You know I am analytical and that includes my feelings. I don’t want to be the type of person that says ‘let’s do this’ and then changes their mind the next day or the next week. You told me your idea, I thought about it. I agreed. What makes me wonder is why do you not take me at my word.”

Rinker was usually the more logical and calculating person in a relationship, more honest as well, but Briony completely flipped that dynamic on him. “Can we not let our logical minds screw up this relationship. It is, exactly what it is and what it is at this moment is something that is best expressed by jewelry.” He would have kissed her but she wasn’t much into PDA especially on her own ship, so he controlled that urge… for now.
“I like the idea of necklaces, it hangs near the heart…” He looked at her, “But you never wear that stuff… except when simming on the holodeck.” He could imagine a couple of nice pieces. “Perhaps the security officer in you doesn’t like the idea of something around your neck that could be used to choke you? Hmm..” Rinker found waist chains sexy.. ankle chains cute… but neither seemed to strike the right tone in his mind…
Briony flashed a quick grin. She rarely wore jewelry except when she was dressing up for something, but she had been finding ways to incorporate jewelry more often. It had been an effort to find some daily joy outside of her job after the nightmarish year. And if Heathcliff was going to buy her jewelry, she would definitely endeavor to wear it.
“Anything scream Rinker to you??”
Rinker“You want me to look for something for you?” she teased as she scanned the shelves.
“Not for me, I wanted you to find something that you would like to wear since you have to wear it.” Rinker tilted his head. “I guess I could pick it for you, but if you don’t like it you have to pretend or risk hurting my feelings.” He looked about. He stopped after a moment as he noted she was teasing him.
Off to one side was a display of necklace and earring sets. There, she found a rather delicate white gold necklace with a small drop pendant of a clear round cut stone and a rounded square blue stone. It was coupled with a set of matching earrings, just as simple in design. The jeweler rushed over and began to describe the stones. “The top one is a 1.5 carat high grade round cut diamond from Earth Colony 2. Mined ethically of course. And the blue stone is actually a 4 carat carbochon Kyanite from the Folnar jewel plant on Folnar III. The color variance is what makes that particular stone so lovely. The necklace comes with the matching earrings; .5 carat round diamonds and 2 carat carbochon kyanite respectively. All in all, a delicate and beautiful set.”
He smiled winningly at the couple after his sellers spiel. “Well,” She said turning to Cliff. “I wouldn’t be able to be choked with that chain. Far too delicate.” The salesman’s smile wavered. Was she complimenting his work or was she not?. “I would like to try that on please.”
“Its pretty. It does kind of scream Rinker… and not being killed by it is a bonus.”
The salesman smiled once again and brought forth the small and delicate chain, clasping it around her neck so that the pendant hung just before her cleavage. She looked in the mirror and smiled. “What do you think?”
Briony, CO
Rinker growled a low in his throat. There was no way for Briony to tell if it was due to the necklace or the cleavage. “My mind has been stunned into thoughtlessness by the view. However, if I had the ability to speak, I would be very happy to buy that for you…” He turned slightly…
She laughed, unable to help herself from enjoying him outwardly. There were just times that Heathcliff Rinker could just bring a smile to her face and a laugh to her heart whether she wanted to show it or not. He had a way with words that made her amused and his obvious attraction to her made her feel important and loved. Her fingers gently brushed the blue stone. It felt cool, but not overly so.
“If the price is right.....” Rinker had been pretty loose with his money. Not a significant problem since he did well and had very few expenses, on the other hand he didn’t like to be taken. It wouldn’t take much effort to figure out the right price using the computer.
Rinker
The salesman, not wanting to upset the Captain of the Magellan and the man with her, did not charge more than was necessary to make a normal amount of profit that no one could deny he should make. He wasn’t about to swindle them only to have his life made miserable here on the starbase, or be kicked off permanently. When anything could technically be replicated, he valued his loyal customers like he valued his merchandise… with pride.

“Done and done,” He reached out to shake the saleman hand. Rinker had learned from years of being a therapist, a task that often was as basic as talking, knew that a fair price was relative to how people perceived the value of the service. And with such preparation, he graciously accepted the offered price. He made the necessary arrangements for payment.
“I know its petty… but I’d like to put it on you.” It was a silly request, she would have to take it off so he could put it back on her.
