“Much biting and clawing among your clutch mates?” A bit of dry humor as from the stories other humanoids had told him siblings were as prone to squabbles as much as clutch mates were . “Served as a Marine rifleman, a lot like a Gnal clutch.” A deep rumble and dark king of his face as he laughed.

In a more serious tone, “I am a computational linguist, essentially we look at all languages as cyphers, or conversely all cyphers are languages.” “Morning Bright” took another sip of his drink.

Alita downed a bit of her drink as she thought about it

“Biting and clawing… I don’t know if I would put it that way. How about complicated and messy? We all pretty much get along but we’re spread all over the place so we can go quite some time without being in the same room physically. As far as linguistics go, I don’t believe Bre saw them as computational. Some of her journals described them as intuitive. Whatever her theory, it worked quite well. I’m curious what possessed you to become a rifleman?” Alita wondered if she had used the right word but it was too late now. Better just to finish her drink and see what became of the conversation.

  • Alita

“Intuition actually has as much to do with it as dose the math, you have to start some where, and where you start has a lot to do with how fast you crack the problem” Morning Bright said as he reached for a pork rib,” As for the Corp, there was a war on and the recruiters saw some one who could make a type fore phaser man portable”. Swallowing the rib”In the end one of the unit armorers rigged a mount for a century gun that worked very well.”
The Gnal didn’t really consider his service as anything other than his duty, it was his appointment to a Starship he was proud of.

Alita studied Morning Bright a bit more carefully for a few seconds. She didn’t feel as id she was committing some cultural faux pas considering the subject matter they were discussing practically begged for her to do so. Still, she didn’t linger, it wasn’t her way. Anna had taught everyone excellent manners.

“Yes, I can see where that would be incredibly useful. Did you have a problem with the weight of it all? And while I respect the sciences, if you ever feel like security work I’ll gladly take you on.”

  • Reia

“Twenty percent of my mass is an easy hump, m’am. I believe the specifications for my load bearing equipment is on file.”. “Morning Bright” has carried more than three times that on occasion but due to his body structure it required assistance to sling the extra weight.

Looking at the young woman a moment. “I believe I can do the most good where I am, but as they say, ‘every marine is a rifle man’ and the bulk of my work doesn’t happen untie after the AO is secure.” He paused a moment, I admit that cross training with your department would be a pleasure. One never knows when they may be called on to defend his crew mates.”

“Morning Bright” missed the camaraderie but was a rather large target for a security officer. “How well versed are you in amphibious operations?”

Across the room, Reilly watched everyone mingle and smiled. It was good to bonds forming and people simply enjoying their time. He looked over at Alita and said over the multiple conversations going on “Hey, Lieutenant? Mind if I modify your scenery a bit?” and he grinned, wondering if she was curious enough to see what he had in mind.

Reilly, XO

Alita smiled.

Reilly took that as approval and went to the door panel. In a few seconds, a baby grand piano appeared off to the side. Reilly smiled and went and took a seat at it.

“No need to call me ma’am. I’m too young for that actually and we’re definitely not on duty. You see, I know enough about many many things to be dangerous. Personally I think that’s why Captain Boudreaux likes keeping me around. So I never think that more knowledge is a bad thing. As for your load bearing specifications, I might look them up someday. I would be much more concerned about how to treat your wounds on a battlefield though. I was initially brought on as a combat medic. I like to protect people and keep them safe and that seemed to fall withing those parameters quite nicely.” Alita explained as she nearly finished her drink.

“Morning Bright” took a moment,” Other than our respiratory systems we are not particularly dissimilar, but my mass gives me some resistance. Certainly that will also creat issues as well. Standard means of handling me as a casualty will not apply, but cargo handling sleds should work.” I would also suggest larger dressings and splints be available, as I am likely to survive larger wounds that some one a fraction my size.”

The subject of becoming a casualty didn’t particularly bother him. It was a reality he was familiar with. “Gnal our listed in the standard medical text, it’s just that those of our smallest genotype are much more common.”

Snaking his head around to look at his companion strait on, “I do appreciate your concern, I do make a rather large target” lucky for “Morning Bright” He had been mistaken for a beast of burden on more than one occasion.

Alita a found herself looking straight into Morning Bright’s eyes. The sensation was interesting but not unpleasant.

“I prefer to be over prepared rather than caught off guard.” she explained.

  • Alita

“Morning Bright’s” creat Rose part way, wile his face darkened in the Gnalish version of a smile. “A wise woman, Miss Alita” a deep almost subsonic rumble of contentment began emanating from deep in his body. “A very wise woman indeed.”

The pleasure in companionship and conversation was something shared between humanoids and Gnal. “Besides Security Devision Chief, Corpsman and caterer, what other hats do you wear herein the Wolverine? He spoke as he turned his head back so he could take in his companion in his accustomed sidelong manner. This of corse slowed him to indulged in his vice of ‘people watching’.

The low, soft sounds of uptempo music began to drift through the party. Reilly sat and played, a smile on his face, and softly hummed an old song he learned when he was on Earth. It was called “Sir Duke” by a classical artist named Steve Wonder.

Reilly, XO

Alita was listening to the music as she spoke with Morning Bright. It turned out Riley really did have some skills.

“I’m not certain if I have room fro anything else but, if another role comes along I’ll probably be the first one to fall into it whether I want to or not. It kind of seems to be my lot in life.” she said.

  • Alita

Listing to the music, “Morning Bright’s” mind followed the patterns in the music. He began to ‘hum’ along. “If you need assistance don’t hesitate to ask. I might not be a chef or a medic but I have a sharp mind and a strong back.” The tip of his tail was drumming in time with the music.

“We tend to help each other out a lot on the Wolverine it being such a small ship. Sometimes newcomers find it a bit challenging trying to find a place to fit in but most of us are really very friendly.” Alita explained.

  • Alita

Looking at the security chief come caterer “Morning Bright” ‘smiled’ his face turning darker green wile his crest rose and he ‘nodded’ by slightly tilting his head toward his companion.
It was true, unlike his last posting this crew did not seem to suffer any anxiety at his presence and several actively sought his company.

He continued to ‘hum’ along with the tune.

Ensin “Morning Bright”

Reilly finished the song, but before the last notes faded he started a new one; again one of the classics, but this by the famous 20th century composer William Joel. The opening refrain of ‘Shes Got A Way’ began and the XO began to sing softly… and really well.

Shes got a way about her…
I don’t know what it is
But I know that I can’t live without her
She’s got a way of pleasin’, mmh
I don’t know what it is
But there doesn’t have to be a reason
Anyway

Reilly, XO

bump

As Reilly finished the song, Remy started the applause for the XO. When he reached the side of the piano, he clapped Reilly on the back. “Mon Dieu, Jason, I ‘ad no idea dere was such a soft-earted man inside you.”
