As Remy quizzed Bryson, Reilly looked at Mado since the man had deflected some of his line of questioning. “And what, exactly, is that age? And have the powers that be looked at what happened at that time? I mean… you are looking at objects of a specific age, at least that’s what you said, right? Have you looked at what happened in that time?”

“The point that an object gains its metaphysical properties is indeterminate and is different for every object, Commander. By age, I meant, most objects we’ve encountered are old, more than 50 years, however some objects have been known to gain its metaphysical properties for less time than that. It is quite impossible to observe an object’s transition of gaining metaphysical properties in a laboratory setting,” replied Mado.

Alita sat back in her chair attempting to remain expressionless. She had a very strong feeling that the Wolverine was a magnet for many shades of crazy and this was just the latest incarnation. And was that a smirk she saw on Remy’s face?

“My friend, Fleet Captain Lawrence, had some dealings with her while on the Asimov.” Commander Erin stated. The Ops manager relaxed his stance some and leaned forward. “Apparently she has the ability to appear in a holographic state without any nearby emitters, which means she’s also capable of listening in on our conversations as well…” Bryson stated. “....I knew Commander Wells’s name sounded familiar when I met her.” The Commander added, “She’s acquainted with the Admiral.”

“As far as I know, she’s had some dealings on the Asimov and Viking, but when I pestered for more information Lawrance backed down and told me to contact Fleet Captain Weir on the Odin.”

“The Admiral… is a very mysterious woman, Commander. Even as one of her underlings, I do not know much about her,” said Mado, “Though I’m told that she’s been alive as long as any other El-Aurian, despite being completely human.”

“She is very good at telline you what SHE wants you to know an’ what you don’ need to know,” Remy added.

He looked over the faces of those gathered. “I fear we are no’ de only ones dat are aware of these artifacts. In fact, de toy car, it ‘as de ability to drain energy from oder objects. It was transported onto my shuttle for dat purpose. By who?? We don’ know yet. What I do know is dat it was an attempt on my life.”

He let that sink in for a moment. ” I ‘ave my ideas who, bu’ it is no’ confirmed. If one of Starfleet’s enemies, or a rogue element, or terrorist organization gets dere ‘ands on one of dese items. . . it could be devasttine, per’aps on an intergalactic scale. WE need to be ever vigilant to keep de Federa-SHON safe.”

Alita glanced at Remy and quickly looked away. Protocol be damned, she would be having a little chat with him after this meeting. She didn’t just introduce him to her family to have them loose him so soon.

“There have been reports from other agents in the field of artifacts going missing before they could be located. Detections of strong signatures only to disappear right before they got to the artifact… but the reports have been few, selective even,” replied Mado, “We have been tracking the reports but nothing concrete. This is the first evidence of the misuse of artifacts, Captain, if the object you say it does was an attempt on your life.”

Reilly looked at Mado and asked “So how many of these have you found so far? And how many are you tracking? And have you found any that have been put up for sale anywhere?” It was the last question he was most interested in an answer to.

“The problem with the questions your asking, Commander, is that artifacts are constantly are found all the time by field agents. As to the exact number, I am not sure. For my personal time doing this particular job, I lost count at 1000. As for tracking – I don’t know, that information is only at the Central HQ of the agency, and not many field agents get the chance to visit the Central HQ or have a need to. Most of our assignments are handed remotely and securely. As for artifacts being put up and sold, the problem is that we have to investigate all auctions that sell anything old – since the metaphysical properties do not always manifest themselves, and sometimes those metaphysical property signatures don’t get detected unless the metaphysical property is active. Agents tend to use intuition to find artifacts… ‘trust your gut’ as it is said,” said Mado, “Ultimately, that presents us with a unique problem – any auction selling anything old and rare could be an artifact that is lying dormant or somehow the metaphysical properties are being suppressed, making it difficult to detect. That does not include the black market auctions that we have to try to discover. Risa is one such world where, despite being a pleasure planet, makes an incredible cover to sell rare goods to wealthy people. As a result, artifacts do flow through Risa – mostly accidentally.”
