Kadence watched the exchange and smiled. As they moved to settle down and she took the offered chair, she smiled. “Thank you. As you know, there will come a time I need to access certain computer files that may be flagged. I came to give you my clearance codes so you would know it was authorized for me to read them. Due to the nature of most of the crew, I’m sure you can appreciate both the need for the security locks on their accessible files as well as the need for me to occasionally access them.” She crossed her legs and smiled. This seemed to be a woman she could get to know and like.

“Yes. Actually I have basic counseling training and, even if I didn’t, all of your requests make perfect sense. Be careful, some of those files are booby traps or, at least, you’ll think they are.” she said with a smile.

Quickly rising form the chair she walked to the replicator.

“Coffee?” she asked.

Anyone who knew Alita well knew that she usually had a cup of coffee in her hand and that she always looked like she was running to, or from, something.

Kadence smiled. “Tea, please. Lavender Tea, if it’s not too much trouble. Thank you. And yes, I am aware of the nature of the,” she paused with a small laugh, “beasts aboard our pirate ship.” She smiled watching the woman move around. “And I appreciate your understanding of my request. You wouldn’t believe how many others ships I end up fighting for every inch on.”

Alita got her coffee extra strong with dark chocolate and a touch of cream and Kady’s lavender tea. Returning to the desk she sat down and brought up the necessary programs.

“Yes, but beasts can be fun and I don’t plan to fight you for every inch of anything. I find working with most people is usually a good idea… Within limits of course. There’s usually one or two people on every ship that make themselves very hard to get along with.” Alita said.

Kady took the tea and murmured a ‘thank you’. When the Chief spoke of butting heads, she smiled. “Well, I’m glad. Because I don’t wish to fight with you, either. I think of all those on the ship, it will be you I work most often with. A place like this, those who are ‘hard to get along with’ usually end up in security situations. And that is where I come in. Trying to find out just why they ended up where they are.”

She blew on the surface of her tea and smiled. “And I’m here for you, as well. Remember that. This is one of those jobs that leaves you in desperate need of a punching bag or bad situation holo program. Remember there are other alternatives.” Kady took a sip of her tea and watched the woman. This was someone she might find her own time seeking out on occasion.

Alita immediately thought of the ice bear and her own Remy.

“People usually end up in strange situations on this ship because this ship is strange and that’s okay most of the time. We have quite a bunch of characters here some of which want to be worshiped and some of which just are. I suppose me saying this probably comes across as gossip. Would it help to know I have basic psychological therapy training in my background and that some of my hobbies include cooking and holodeck programming?” she asked taking a drink of her coffee.

Kady smiled. “Holodeck programming, eh? I will have to remember that. Those things elude me for all but the most basic programs. And no, it wouldn’t surprise me to know of your psych background. I have come to find a lot of Security Chiefs in our field have a similar background by either training or in job experience.” Taking another sip of her drink, she thought for a moment. “I think my only hobbies are drawing and I dance. My background is actually trauma medicine.” She laughed. “I got into counseling as a side thing and others took notice.” She shrugged and lifted a hand to indicate where they were. “So here I am. Been doing it for years now and I love it. I doubt I could do security.” She laughed. “I’d be so busy trying to suss out why they did something, I’d forget to put them into custody.”

Alita plucked a cinnamon roll from the box.

“Actually custody is the easy part, investigation can get quite psychological, so the whole counseling thing can come in quite handy. Trauma medicine hmm? My twin sister and I were actually very specifically trained to be mission officers. Capable at many things usually reserved fro longer lived species like Vulcans, El-Aurians, etc, but Olivia and I just seemed able to bounce around so easily that we seemed to fit the nature of the program. I seemed to specialize more in medicine and security. She could probably best me in science and engineering any day though. She’s on the Neil deGrasse Tyson and I’m not certain when I’ll see her again.”

Alita paused and nibbled at the cinnamon roll. The new vanilla in the icing really did make a difference.

“And my life has never been the same since I joined the Wolverine.”

“I can imagine. Mine has certainly already changed as well.” She laughed realizing she had already had a dinner date with the XO the evening she arrived. And she’d had dinner with the Captain the next night after checking in. It was day three and tonight the XO was dining with her once more.

“I think it’s great you two got the training you did. Especially on a ship like this, I can see it coming in handy. Will be interesting to run my first mission with you all.” She laughed. “Though I probably just jinxed myself on how much fun I will have.” She laughed and watched the woman devour the sweet roll with an almost delicate nature.

Alita hadn’t known the last counselor very well but, remembered Ayla fondly.

“Counselors get themselves into interesting positions on this ship. Be careful what you wish for. Whatever it is, you’ll probably get it. Something I’ve never actually found out though… Is there a type of advanced training for counselors that could redesign the AI for the Wolverine or is that more of an engineering thing?”

Alita hoped it had nothing to do with Petrov’s section.

Kadence thought for a moment. “I’m not sure. I mean, it strikes me that it would be a programming issue. So not my wheel house. But I’m happy to look into it. What’s wrong that it needs redesigning?” No one had ever asked her to head shrink an AI before. The idea was kind of intriguing.

Alita thought for a few seconds on how best to answer the question without delving too quickly into personal issues. The XO’s comment had really stuck with her.

“It likes to assume personal facts, not in evidence. I had to ask some in depth questions regarding out CO and it assumed I had inappropriate feelings towards him, or something of that nature. Needless to say, I was not pleased.” Alita explained dispassionately.
