Lieutenant Alita Claire… she intrigued Reilly, more so than most on the ship. Obviously intelligent and capable of holding her own in situations, she had an energy… at least in her file… that seemed unique. Looking over her file, her meeting request was done directly, not via a calendar appointment. =^= Lieuteant Claire. Please come to the XO’s office when you can. Thank you. =^=Reilly, XO
Five minutes later Alira rang the chime of the XO’s office. She was freshly dressed and showered form a workout and due to formally begin her shift in an hour. Ringing the chime, she waited, curious to speak with the XO.
- Alita, MO/COS
The door slid open and the new XO stood up from behind his desk and moved towards her. “Ah, Lieutenant. Thank you so much for coming by. I hope it wasnt too much of an interruption to your schedule. I’m Commander Jason Reilly.” and he extended his hand to her.
Reilly was of average height for a human, and had brown hair. His eyes were exceptionally green, though, and it intensified the alertness evident in them. He wore his uniform almost casually, as if he was still getting used to it.
“Do come in and have a seat, won’t you?” and he gesturing to one of a pair of chairs in front of his desk. Gesturing to the crates taking up much of the floor space, he said “Sorry for the state of things. Still settling in, as it were.”
Reilly, XO
Alita stepped in and shook the new XO’s hand warmly noting the handsome man’s green eyes. Her heart skipped a beat and she wondered ‘No, please no.’. Smiling about the crates, she nodded and sat down.
“I completely understand the whole unpacking situation. I think I still have a box from two transfers ago. I’m almost afraid to look in it. Pleased to meet you Commander.” she said pleasantly.
- Alita, MO/COS
He smiled easily at her and took a seat after she did. “I think I threw away most of my boxes like that.” and he chuckled. “And again, thank you so much for coming. I know you are busy, and I don’t want to take up too much of your time. I am trying to meet, one on one with all the Command Staff. And I wanted to ask you what I, as Executive Officer, can do for you? Anything. I’m new, so now’s the time to ask for the things you keep being denied because, frankly, I don’t know that you don’t need it yet.” and he smiled again.
Reilly, XO
Alita returned his smile easily.
“Oh please, feel free to take up as much of my time as you like. Rank has it’s privileges after all, doesn’t it? Or maybe you’re still learning that. Honestly I can’t think of anything that we actually need. I want a Captain and First Officer who knows a little bit about every department and takes everything they have to say seriously but isn’t afraid to make the command decision. That’s something I never had to worry about with Remy.” Alita paused and smiled, “That is… Captain Boudreaux. Close quarters can breed familiarity, I’m sure you’re familiar with that.”
“How do you feel about welcome parties Commander? I am the ships defacto chef.” she said trying to divert attention from her slip up.
- Alita, MO/COS
Reilly’s green eyes flashed and a small smile crossed his lips. He leaned forward and said “Ok. Elephant in the room time. You want an XO who does all that, then that relationship is based on trust. Now… I dont mind you calling your great-great-great whatever Grandpa by his first name in here, but folks outside this or his office my take… a more colorful… view of your relationship if that slips out in general conversation. So just keep an eye on that, and none will be the wiser. Ok?” and he smiled a bit and leaned back. “Skipper told me when I met him. He thought it better I know then then find out later.” and he pause and let her adjust to the new information and then said “Oh, and I love parties. Any excuse works for me, as long as the food is good.” and he smiled and winked.
Reilly, XO
Alita met the new XO’s eyes and merely nodded.
“Well, I guess I’ll have it figured out within the next two weeks then. And as far as all that family stuff goes? Yeah, it’s an interesting adjustment. I usually don’t slip like that sir.” Alita explained.
- Alita, MO/COS
He waved off her explanation and smiled. “No worries, Lieutenant. Just a piece of friendly advice. Now… questions. Which ones do you have for me before we get down to Security operations?”
Reilly, XO
“Well, start by just giving me your pedigree. I prefer to hear it from you rather than looking at a file. And then I’d like to know your expectations of me as an officer.” Alita said calmly, her green eyes meeting his.
- Alita, MO/COS
He smiled and said “Pedigree… well, I suppose I’ve been called worse than a dog before..” and he leaned back in his chair. “My background is complicated, but i will do my best to distill it down. I started as a Star Fleet brat, both mom and dad currently serve. Graduated the Academy with a Security specialization and due to my aptitude with languages I was moved to Intel a few years later. Served there for some time, got bored. Went to the Diplomatic Corps. Got bored again, went back to Intel. Then it was determined that the Wolverine needed an XO and voila… here I am. As far as what I expect from you… I expect you to do your job the best you know how to do it. I’m not here to tell how your department should work. Thats your job. My job is to set goals and priorities. You meet those, we will be fine. You exceed those? I’ll be very impressed. You fail to meet them, we will talk and figure out why. You continue to fail, I’ll make sure we get someone in here to do the job right… which I don’t expect to happen. Your file is solid and your evals the same. That work for you?”
Reilly, XO
Alita nodded and smirked just a bit.
“That works just fine by me. And many creatures have pedigrees. On certain planets even butterflies have pedigrees. Don’t worry Commander, I don’t think you’re a butterfly but, I do hope you don’t plan to get bored with the Wolverine anytime soon. I would find that very unbecoming a first officer.” Alita said.
- Alita, MO/COS
He looked at her with mock shock and said “Have you read the personnel files and mission briefings? Seriously… If I get bored here I’m just not paying attention.” and he laughed. “I have no plans to get bored or leave. I can promise you that.”
Reilly, XO
Alita grinned from ear to ear. She was pleased he caught on quickly.
“Personally I don’t see who one could get bored on this particular ship but, I had to be certain. I’m glad to hear it.” she said.
- Alita, MO/COS
He smiled and said “I aim to please, Lieutenant. Do you have anything else?”
Reilly, XO
Alita relaxed again settling into a more professional posture.
“No, I can’t think of anything.”
She paused for a long second then shook her head in finality.
- Alita, MO/COS
Reilly nodded once and said “Good. Now, as we have one of the more colorful crews in Star Fleet, I am going to task you with completing a background screening for all personnel within the next ten days. Everyone, Command staff included, are to be screened, vetted, and all necessary updates made to the files. Any flags are to be brought to the attention of me and the Captain.” and he paused and grinned. “Let me rephrase that… Any new flags from the last screening.” and he chuckled. “You can bring them all at once or as they are done, either way. When you are done, you and I will review and the Captain and us will discuss any necessary items that may have arisen. Understood?”
Reilly, XO
This time it was Alita’s turn to give a horrified look, but it was genuine. She wanted to lunge across the desk and laugh in the man’s face or run out the door to the nearest liquor cabinet and drown her sorrows but, she was raised with much more composure than that.
“It’s a very good thing I have a computer and a team and a fully stocked kitchen. This crew is nothing but flags sir. In a sick way, I think that’s what makes the ship work. Naturally I will do as you request. It’s going to be a fun ten days. Perhaps I should get started sooner rather than later.” she suggested.
